PvP games attract young males who like to trash talk. . Any game with a global chat channel will appear to be bad. It takes what? Five arsehats to ruin a channel. Meh, despite the glowing reviews it gets a lot of LOTRO players and websites/blogs are conservative and ignorant at best, and downright belligerent and idiotic at their worst, when anything from another game is mentioned. What I mean by this is that while a lot of them are really nice in their own game, whenever someone does anything that's vaguely related to WoW it's instantly critcised and nitpicked (see LOTRO Gear Whore. I have no problem with the name at all nor the ranking system, but some of the LOTRO website likened it to GearScore (I lol'd at that) and said the name was way too horrible.) But, yeah. It's not all roses.
Worst community has got to be AoC. Their forums are full of arsey wankers who whine about everything (mainly the PvPers truth be told) and it's the main reason why I quit; it's like everything bad in WoW lumped into a game, in terms of community.
RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.
and as a secondary question, why do so many players continue to play games they dont even like for so long?
They all have good and bad and WoW is only always mentioned because of the sheer amount of people playing it in proportion to any other Mmo , the only other thing I can say is ..... God help us all when Mmo's come to Ps3 and Xbox ... then sir you will see bad community on an apocalyptic scale !
To me, the worst community ever is the Grand Chase one.
There is simply no way to make a thread or ask a question in their forums without having one of the "elite" posters dislike your point of view and make it so that the hordes of sheeps behind them flame your thread for like 3 days after your last answer.
On top of that it is useless to try and make them understand your point of view because they will just keep repeating whatever the popular poster said, no matter if it has nothing to do with your current argument.
if for a weird reason or by sheer luck you somehow manage to get them to notice your point, and the find no way to oppose to it, then they will proceed to check all your messages for possible mispells "eben if dei mai be spekin liek dis" and bash you for it, or simply say " IF YA DNT LIKE IT; LIEK PLAY ANOTHER GAME LULZ"
To make an example of what i talk about :
Grand Chase is a rpg/arcade game that offers you 3 different starting female characters only ( for lore reasons ) which means you can´t start playing as a male character unless you either pay, or get high lvl enough to unlock the male characters thru a serie of mindnumbing grind quests ( except perhaps for 1, which is fairly easy to unlock within a couple weeks of playing )
This makes it so that from time to time, an user or a group of users ask the company to consider making ONE of the previously unlockable male characters ( perhaps the easiest one ) a starter character, since many years passed and the initial lore is kinda dispersed anyway.
Asking for such thing, even when your thread may be very well written and offering compensations to the players who had to unlock it and what not, will be met with a horde of ( mainly female and 12 yy "i like to stare at girl´s pixelized ass" ) players that will start calling you sexist, racist ( yes, i dont know what has race to do with this either ) will flame you, not only in that thread but in pretty much every single post you make on completely unrelated topics for about 2 to 3 months, and may end up with a petition to get you banned for being " a piece of sexist trash who has come to GC to perjudicate the female playerbase"
This is just a small example of what is in store for anyone over 15 yy old foolish enough to enter their forums.
I will look this game up since the games forum seems to offer some fun for me.
Yes WoW is bad but I think that the free for all PvP games might be even worse but I stay way clear of those. *Laughs*
Ewww... it's a sidescrolling platformer.
I left those kind of games in the late 90s and I never looked back.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
RYL, risk your life was by far the worst. The game itself was garbage. The developers offered a $1,000,000.00 prize to the winner of a PVP tourney. Later the tourney was stopped and the devs admitted that the exploiters were smarter than them. The chat channel was filled with obviously young males who believed themselves to be PVP gods. Thankfully the chat channels were so entertaining you could get some value out of this horror.
Community is pretty easy to gauge, the more PvP the worst the community is a good measure to go by.
DAOC would have proven this theory incorrect, and even though EVE has a lot of PVP I rather enjoy the community, though I know many folks think otherwise.
But worst community for me was probably ROM PVP server, bunch o ganking P2W jerks.
I know, I didn't say WOW, but I played pre-BC and I rather thought the community was pretty decent back then. Perhaps its gong downhill since then.

I have experienced 3 MMO communities and I have found them to be measurably different.
Fallen Earth for example as a great community compared to Darkfall.
Moving from EQ2(my first 'real' MMO) to Darkfall was a massive shock.
I think its related to pvp
Are you basing your opinion on forum posts and Race Alliance chat? Because both of those are god awful in Darkfall's case. My experience with Darkfall's community has been far from the worst. I was actually surprised how helpful people were in game after reading a lot of negativity with respect to the community.
I know there are many little shits running around Agon, but I personally find them to be in the minority.

It has, a lot. Vanilla WoW had a fairly pleasent community. Nowadays it is just crap.
When I played Warhammer I thought they had a fairly nice community and it is a pvp focused game.
For me, AoC had the worst community. Darkfall has its share of asshats, but it's nowhere near as bad as I had expected. In fact, I'd say WoW has a worse community than DF.
And I agree with the earlier post that Ryzom had the most friendly and supportive community. Hands down the best out of the ones I've tried. LotRO was decent too.
Current: None Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

i do agree that the deeper you get to the core players the better the community gets. That said, on average my experience with FE community was better than my experience with DF community as a whole. Now granted, I have found some great people in DF but I am talking about averages.
With all that said, the game (DF) is still so good that it trumps the bad community

yes, if you want others to hear you the sad fact of reality (although its not fair) is that you have to repeat yourself many times.

Isn't that weird about WoW I thought the same thing. Seems around TBC is when things noticeably changed.
When I started at launch I couldn't tell the difference between WoW, EQ, and DAOC communities. Generally folks were pleasant and helpful. Now I shudder to think what 11 million people have done to it. Small town mindset vs. New York I guess. WAR was pretty good when I played it too.

Sadly you are right, although I couldn't really care less about being heard, I highly doubt anyone takes my posts as being significant in any way shape or form (and if they do more fool them). The point was if someone is going to attack a poster they should at least check what they had recently posted in that very thread lol.

MMO forums have the worst community. Sorry, I love you all but we (i am not an exception) dwell overly on the negative. While we may have positive motives, i.e. improving the game/genre, it comes across as rabid vitriol.
This is the truth. The MMO community in general is subdivided into many different subsets according to preferences. Each subset, however, believes that there is only one "true" way to make an enjoyable MMO - their way.
In short, the MMO community as a whole is immature and myopic.
To the OP, if you're talking worst overall game communities, in my opinion Darkfall is by far the worst I've ever experienced. Hell, it's the worst I've ever even heard of.
Runner-up would go to AoC.
and you probably havnt heard half of it, to date I havnt heard/read/seen any type of forums (pre-forums to DF) in the same league as that plague infested inbred internet assylum. Then again have no idea how after-launch-forums are, maybe better but Id doubt it.
you have obviously never read L2blah sayha and before the merge erica server had some hatefull people it was fantastic.

also these can be some of the biggest cry baby communities , aswell.
Enough of these cry babies will ruin a game and make it have to go f2p.
