Today I launched Darkfall, created my human and wandered around the noobie area taking in the scenery on my trial. The world is amazing, and I loved the lighting in the night, the foliage, everything visual. The creation process was a bit meh, but easily overlooked as its easy to get used to any UI over time.
My biggest W.T..% was the controls. How do people do it? I have played nearly every MMO out there that has had any hype or pulse but I just can't get over the controls. I was so let down I uninstalled the game. I don't even mind the corpse looting, but the constant right mouse clicking switching interfaces is a huge let down. Maybe its something the Darkfall fans just get used to, but I can't imagine the loyalist of fans play anything else. I guess I just can't get over the fact that I can't strafe with my right mouse button. *rant*
But really, such a beautiful world that I just can't get into sadly. I even love the pseudo UO skillup system.

You of course know your whole concern is based off controls each user can CHANGE to THEIR liking, I NEVER used right-click as the interface switch key, I remapped right-click to be parry back in Beta and never looked back.
I highly suggest you give it another try before your time runs out and actually take the time to learn what you can do with the controls.
I don't play DF anymore but it is a good game and the problem you yourself have is easily dealt with.
Do research next time.

No one I know uses the default control scheme. I use right mouse button for blocking and have mouse_4 auto-run, mouse_5 to open and close the interface.
YOU have to change the button. And I encourage you to try again, just have some patience.
I also hated the default controls setup. It was one of the first things I changed. Once you get it to how you like it, it's much easier to focus on the game itself.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Pretty much every keys can be remapped....so if controls were really your issue with DarkFall, you should consider re-installing. Once you get in-game, look at the Input Binding under the Option Menu, and have fun testing the various keys until you find a combination you are comfortable with.
Been playing since beta. I love DFO. The UI default SUCKS !!!
Take the time to remap them as all others have suggested.
For example when you are moving, to spring the default key is "shift" but the default to change hot bars is Shift-#key which makes it so you change hot bars without wanting to if you're sprinting and hit a hot key 1 - 0. Change the key to switch hot bars to some thing that makes sense or don't and open your entire 10 hot bar rows by clicking on the mni arrow just under the main arrow that moves you from hot bar 1 to 2 to ....so on and that lower arrow will open all 10 hot bars. You can map any key on the keyboard to any square in any row on in the 10x10 hot bar slots.
Instead of right click for the interface being engaged toggle, I use the tild key personally.
The best advice to any new player is to spend all the time they need to, to make the UI work for them. You can do it, just takes patience and then the UI won't be a problem.
In the next major expansion the entire UI is being redone from top to bottom, but for now you just need to remap it.
Good luck and if you have more questions ask away here or on the official forums and I'm sure you will get more tips of what works for people.

I did not investigate the changing controls issue, I did look, but it must not be intuitive. Thanks for letting me know, i'll check it out again. I really do think Darkfall pushes new players away on first try.
You wouldn't be the first. I remember reading a few new players comments where they said they had raged on their first day and uninstalled, then got angry at themselves and re-installed the game and finally started to enjoy it. Seems to be somewhat common.
Like they all said, you need to create a control scheme to your liking. It's rather simple and you can take a look online at other GUIs to get a sense of how you should custom create your own.
No we don't get used to them. We change them since they are fully customizable. The button that you press for the cursor can be any button that you want. You shouldn't be using that button during combat so what does it matter? You will get used to it. Ever play Oblivion? Controls are somewhat similar. Try and fix your bindings like they were in that game at first.
I cannot think of a single Darkfall player that uses the default . .. unless they are totally new.
This means that you will have to mess around with it until something fits. Once you get used to it than going to a different game may feel like your ability to jump has gone away because you have a lot of freedom to move in this game.

I actually haven't remapped the GUI Mode (it's still mapped to Mouse Right Click). I tend to change back and forth GUI Mode a lot so it's a lot more convenient this way. And I have 2 buttons on the left side of my mouse so it ain't too bad. Using "V" ain't so bad either to Block. I'm used to having to press "C" in FPS to crouch or Cast Spells in Oblivion so it didn't bother me too much. That's just me though :P
I had to remap hotbars though....hated the previous settings.
Hahahahaha. RMB strafing. Lol.
entering/exiting GUI mode's not something that's done often enough to warrant it being in an important place, nor is it done so much as to become a hassle if it's in an awkward place. I use Esc for mine and have zero problems. I even use / as my 2ndary use key, freeing up G for much more important binding
both of these keys are important to have bound, but not keys that you'll need to access quickly, during the heat of battle/chase, therefore having them on keys that take an extra reach from your hand/fingers is no big deal.
it's 9AM, i haven't slept yet, and i'm baked as hell, so I hope the above response is decipherable.
I think the problem in key controls is spending all your 24 hour safe time to rig the game to ones playstyle. just a thought.
I agree with this.
Having recently finished my free trial, I continuosly debated using up my precious 24 hour safety time to sit around and navigate the GUI interface, rebinding keys. The advice I got, and the advice I give.... play the game for that first 24 hours, changing stuff that you HAVE to change. Then, when your time is up, you know what all you really want to change. Sit down and take the time to c hange everything then. 24 hours in an MMO is really not very long at all, and it gave me enough time to realize I needed certain keys in certain places.
Bear in mind that I ahve been playig since launch and I am still re-mapping settings. I recently moved the RMB to run and I am still getting used to it.
The default UI certainly needs to be better but the UI has great utility un-seen in other games. The devs claim a UI re-write has been done hopefully it will be in the next release.
The first thing i did in game was change the right click UI toggle, to button clicking the mouse wheel.
The default is awkward, and not many people use it. If you spend like 10 minutes looking through all the input bindings you can customize it anyway you want. If you uninstalled that fast tho, you might not have the patience or skin thick enough to handle PkGrindPkGrindPkFall.
