In 1954, a fifty-two-year-old milk-shake machine salesman saw a hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California, and envisioned a massive new industry: fast food. In what should have been his golden years, Raymond Kroc, the founder and builder of McDonald's Corporation, proved himself an industrial pioneer no less capable than Henry Ford. He revolutionized the American restaurant industry by imposing discipline on the production of hamburgers, french fries, and milk shakes. By developing a sophisticated operating and delivery system, he insured that the french fries customers bought in Topeka would be the same as the ones purchased in New York City. Such consistency made McDonald's the brand name that defined American fast food. By 1960, there were more than 200 McDonald's outlets across the country, a rapid expansion fueled by low franchising fees. Ray Kroc had created one of the most compelling brands of all time. But he was barely turning a profit. Ultimately, it was his decision to use real estate as a financial lever that made McDonald's a viable operation. In 1956, Kroc set up the Franchise Realty Corporation, buying up tracts of land and acting as a landlord to eager franchisees. With this step, McDonald's began to generate real income, and the company took off. Kroc then introduced national advertising programs to support the rapidly proliferating franchises, and when it appeared that growth in the company's home territory was slowing in the early 1970s, he started an energetic and successful push to make McDonald's a global presence. Throughout the company's spectacular growth, Kroc maintained a delicate balancing act, imposing rigorous system-wide standards while encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit that welcomed ideas from all levels. Many of these ideas contributed to the company's astonishing success. In amassing a $500-million fortune, the king of the hamburger transformed the nation's cultural landscape and forged an industry that is among America's greatest exports. The widely imitated success of McDonald's offers an excellent example for today's managers and executives searching for greater production efficiencies. By putting the humble hamburger on the assembly line, Kroc showed the world how to apply sophisticated process management to the most prosaic endeavors. To succeed the McDonald's way, companies must define the basic premise of the service they offer, break the labor into constituent parts, and then continually reassemble and fine tune the many steps until the system works without a hitch. Today, companies engaged in delivering pizzas, processing insurance claims, or selling toys benefit from the kinds of systems that Ray Kroc pioneered. To the degree that such operations maintain quality control, and cherish customer satisfaction, profits may flow.
See people...see? This is what happens when you use analogies. You make posts like these.
Don't give in to the tempation.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Well if/when the WoW killer drops on the world(what a great day it will be) I'm sure you'll all snap out of your transes and wonder why you devoted so much time to the game, or any game realy. But before the messiah arrives there are some things we all must do. We must go and pray at the high chapel of....oh...im thinking of the wrong thing...
but realy theres a few rules to know to ensure that the WoW killer will succeed and liberate humanity from its slave master known only as "sir blizzard".
Rule 1: and i cant stress this enough...whoever the WoW killer is...DONT TALK ABOUT IT. Dont make posts saying "Game A is going to be the WoW killer!!" dont tell your friends dont even hint at it. This will leave the haters and fanbois confused and force them to spread their troll forces across all up-and-coming titles. We must keep the WoW killer a secret, for it and everyone elses sake!
Rule 2:And this is probably the most important rule. DONT COMPARE IT TO WOW. Just dont do it. I know the urge will be there. I know some of you have special keyboards specifically designed to compare a game to WoW. But you have to realize that any game that shares a genre with another game is bound to have some of or most of the features as its neighbor. Its like buying a house. All houses have pretty much the same thing. A roof, flooring(tile, hardwood, carpet), doors, windows, stairs(maybe), Kitchen, etc. But is your house a clone of your neighbors house? it has all of these things( and maybe more !!!)...Dont compare the WoW killer to WoW if you want it to kill it.
Rule 3: Be open minded. Know that for the messiah to be successful it has to be different. and i mean VERY DIFFERENT! Unlike anything we've ever seen. So you're going to have to go in with an open mind.
Rule 4: IT CANT BE KOREAN. period. Don't get me wrong korean mmos are great. but they please a very small market....the koreans(sorry to generalize). Theyre usually very grindy, Have lack-luster graphics, merciless pvp-systems, and i think theres like one little asian man who does all of the art work for all the korean mmo's. But seriously to kill a western Giant you need a western Giant. Using a korean grinder would be like putting out a fire with gasoline. Players would move to it find out its "just another cookie cutter asian grindhouse" and they would quickly resub to WoW reconnect with their old guild and get back to raiding.
Rule 5: When it is released, as evil as this sounds, it will need trolls and fanbois to defend it. A game without its trolls mindlessly following it is like a car with no wheels. You need people to tirelessly defend their game and to troll those all the nonbelievers. Its part of how WoW has survived. Its very dedicated fanbois have an entire legion of minions and murlocks at their command. Such a show of force hasnt been seen since the days of the death star and Darth Vader's heavy breathing over the intercom.
and the last and final rule: Community. It needs the good and the bad. It needs the carebears; it needs the trolls; it needs the fanbois and the heretics alike; outcasts 15 year olds and yes even mac users(gasp!).
If we follow these rules I think the WoW killer will come along and if not kill WoW atleast constantly compete with it. Lets make blizzard sweat alittle.
Yeah, like Rule 1 and Rule 2 will ever happen. Lol.
On a more serious note, I'm getting tire of people always using the term, "WOW Killer". Stop saying that!. Say "This game will give WoW some competition" instead. Seriously, WoW does not need to die for other MMOs to succeed. The sooner developers pretend that WoW does not exist, the better. I'm looking towards SWTOR to hopefully succeed and bring something fresh to the MMO market.
For a game to be a "WOW Killer", I think the number one rule is to NOT IMPLEMENT WEIRD DESIGNS.
Stuff that has killed recent MMO's:
All characters have wings (not everyone wants to play a winged character, even if flight is a major advantage)
Two-realm PVP (WTF! Who came up with this lame idea)
Linear cutscene gameplay (Who wants to play in a "movie" and only occasionally be allowed to participate?)
Overly instanced design (The "MM" in MMORPG means "Massively Multiplayer" for a reason, you know)
All characters are uber (i.e., fallen heroes, destined-to-save-the-world. Look, if everyone is uber, then no one is uber)
Overly involved quests (if you have to click through more than one dialogue box to pick up a quest, your time is being wasted)
Overly long tutorials (A tutorial is meant to show a player how to move and fight. Period. 20-level-long tutorials are stupid)
you know im starting to think youre in the wrong genre. Or maybe you just shouldnt be playing games at all.
1. all characters have wings. Just an idea that someone came up with. nothing wrong with the idea. Personally i like the idea. If you dont want wings dont play the game...period.
2. two realm pvp. A very well thought out idea. This way the pvp is lessened in some areas because some players dont want constant pvp. They want grace periods where they can get a few things done.
3. linear cutscene gameplay. ok i can understand wanting less cutscenes, but theyre there to drive the story. You make it sound as if you only play for 5 seconds and then a 30 minute cutscene comes up. most cutscenes in mmo's are like 30 secs to a minute. depending on its importance. You still have alot of freedom on how you can play the game.
4. just because a game is instanced doesnt mean its not an mmo...just mean it was designed differently. Perhaps to drive the story and the pve because the game has alot of pve content(i kno hes talking about gw here )
5. all characters are uber. would you rather your character be a whimp? or some sickly old man who moves like a snail? or the average joe who just works in a steel mill to earn a living and at the end of the game never lives up to any kind of greater destiny? If the character isnt a hero then theres no point to play him. Even characters that are normal in the beginning but have some tragic event happen to them or they lose some thing become uber in the end. Because theyve gone on this long quest and defied all odds to accomplish some greater goal.
6. overly involved quests. Yea quest text can be shorter but in some cases the quest text tells you alot either about the story or about wtf your supposed to go do. some people get a quest and just blindly click through it and then say wtf quest did i just pick up? or wtf am i supposed to do? some times they dont even know the name of the quest they just got.
7.overly long tutorials. Im just gonna stop you here and say...you dumb a** you can turn off tutorials in almost every single mmo out there. In aion theres an option to never ever display tutorials again. In guild wars theres the same option.
It seems like your some kind of anti guild wars, haterade sippin', bridge humping troll. Guild wars was a very different game. some people couldnt accept the fact that a game could be different from WoW. They were like "wtf this game was made to play different from WoW. The designers had different goals when they made this??? this is madness!!!" <insert 'this is sparta' here>

"this game will give wow some competition".....but thats so wordy and were all lazy gamers who eat hot pockets in our moms basement...the sun burns us all!
I dissagree with all those points, what is needed is a game world thats not a one trick pony, it cant just focus on pvp or pve, it has to have lots of things that it does pretty good so if you get bored in one area you can go to another.
And no instanced zones.
AOC only had a good combat system but horrid pve, utterly pathetic crafting and pvp sucked. istnaced small zones. no mini games like fishing etc.
warhammer. pvp thats it. it was fun the first month but after that you get bored.
There is not gonna be a WOW killer - It simply wont happen. There is no MMO game gonna come out any time soon that has the quality control and the level of polish that Blizzard is offering in WOW atm. Not to mention the gameplay features that makes an Online MMO game really feel like you are playing with your friends on a lan server.
It costs money to produce such quality. It also takes top quality developers and coders and BLizzard will ALWAYS be the first in line to get those cause they have the greatest reputation while most of the "competitors" have already created a stinker.
What makes WOW the best game out there atm is that the game is SIMPLE. It has very clear RPG rules that pretty much everyone can relate to. The developers always try to remove the annoyance and the features that damge the overall gameplay for others as fast as possible and that is the key to a good game. Compare that to the other MMOs that are filled with all sorts of annoyance and grief. Its hard to stamp all sort of grief out of the game. But blizzard is doing the best job possible while most other MMOs are not even trying.
Again - it simply wont happen... The genre is filling up with "niche" this and "niche" that cause no one else will come close to challenge.
Meh I am just going to round up WoW fanbois and put em in death camps playing Hello Kitty online.
--When you resubscribe to SWG, an 18 yearold Stripper finds Jesus, gives up stripping, and moves with a rolex reverend to Hawaii. --In MMORPG's l007 is the opiate of the masses. --The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence! --CCP could cut off an Eve player's fun bits, and that player would say that it was good CCP did that.
I mean who cares who is playing what game? All that matters to me is i find a game that i like,i would hope others are playing what they like and not just FOLLOWERS towards the crowd?I know that statement sounds obvious, but i am sure there was tons if not millions of followers into Wow.
To me a WOW killer was never needed,as EQ2 does the exact same thing ,was out before WOW and is a much better product.FFXI was also out before WOW and is a superior design product to both those games,so i had found what i liked to play. The rest of my time was playing Unreal series/Half life/Quake so i really never cared what was going on in Wow or Blizzard.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
For a game to have a chance at WoW number you would need very few things.
First of all a popular VIDEOGAME franchise. Books or movies will not do becouse the fact that someone likes a movie does not make him a gamer. Example: Just becouse someone is a fan of SW books/movies does not make him automatically a gamer.
Second: Advertising! You cant advertise a game aimed at a wide audience in the same way. So different ads going after the casual, hardcore and non gamers. What interests hardcore gamers, scares off casuals and vice versa.
Thirdly: A developer with a track record that cant be questioned. This is of course the major hurdle for many games. Not all devs are Valve or Blizzard with an imecible track record and loyal fans.
Lastly I would say common sense. No shit talk about WoW killers becouse talk like that immediatly makes people compare the new game to the 5 year old behemoth with content up the ass and spilling out your nose. It does not matter whether WoW is good or not, fact is it has so much content no game can compete with it especially not at the begning. Also what an mmo needs is good word of mouth not fanboy wars which lead to nothing more than scaring of potential consumers and hype...Hype can be a good thing, but really steady growth is more important than huge launch numbers. If a game is overhyped and at launch does not live up to it, it immediatly becomes a target for the haters and forums begin to fill with topics about the game flopping and so on. Alot of people will not try a game they think is doing bad.
The combat HAS to be spot-on. It has to be fluid, responsive and provide the instant reaction that you get with WoW when you press a button. I'm of the opinion that one of WAR's real problems was that its combat was awful; damage arrived before the animation did, it was hit and miss whether an ability fired off, and it felt like you were playing in treacle. So, yeah, responsive combat, above all else. Unless your game doesn't focus on combat :O
RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.
The WoW killer is Activision/Blizzard. What was once a game made by gamers to give gamers the best bang for their buck, has become a revenue generating cash cow that Kotick will wring dry. It's already happening. Adults are flocking away from this kindergarten based, 12 year old infested game. No you say? It's already on the border of being a hybrid pay system.
The next game doesn't have to be polished as WoW. It just needs to have solid game mechanics. The next game won't have to be better than WoW. I doubt anything will ever be that large. It won't have to be, WoW has seen it's limelight and will slowly be pushed out of it by it's company's own greed.

I hate to break it to you, but there is a ton of competition in this market and its only getting more competitive.
While they may have a monopoly on ravid fanbois, Blizzard does not have a monopoly on Money and Talent.

I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I played DAOC and eventually WoW and I thought WAR was going to be there love child.
But the sound didnt sync up, abilities were NOT instant and it suffered the EXACT type of bad code lag that DAOC had.

I'm a veteran gamer who knows what he's talking about and you could learn a thing or two (or more) from listening to me.
oh man...we got ourselves a "veteran gamer" here guys. he even used correct grammar and everything! you're so uber. i think that because you have been into mmo's for x amount of years that you are instantly a pro! all hail ...that guy. The savior of the ignorant and slayer of 'wrong opinions'...dont give two flying fucks about how long youve been playing games, obviously youve learned very little from your years and years and your veteran title is meaningless. because if you were any kind of gamer you would understand that every game is different(sorta) and some games are extremely different. It has wings...OH SHIT CALL OBAMA! this is mad illegal. its a different game so what if YOU dont want to have wings. what about the others that want to have wings. aion isnt doing poorly because of its wings...i can tell you that first hand. If wings are bad then red bull should be put out of business.
I dont know why you hate cutscenes so much. Theyre there to drive the story forward. But wait everyone!!! wait!!! he hates quest text too!! hmmm so you dont want to read a quest and you dont want to watch a cutscene...maybe ill just make a big world with a bunch of trees allow a bunch of people to walk in it aimlessly. would that please you oh mighty veteran?
If the story dictates that a player be this uber badass then he will be this uber badass. if you dont like his uberbadassness then gtfo and go play runescape or something. sure it'd be cool to be a regular joe....but then how will you get by? if your just some joe schmoe you dont do magic; good luck wielding a sword; limits what kind of skills you can give this guy...
instancing doesnt subtract from your connectivity with players. if anything it enhances the experience and allows for more story driven gameplay...mr. i wanna be immersed. Also instancing completely illiminates the old scars on mmo's like kill-stealing, loot fights, boss kill arguments, blah blah blah. and sometimes instancing is needed. if its a super hard dungeon with timed events and an epic boss at the end. it'd be a bit hard to control that in an open world.
seems to me like you just like one game and if every other game isnt just like your holy grail then you instantly hate it. 'what this game has wings? my game doesnt have wings so thats retarded. "

The designers had different goals when they made this??? this is madness!!!"

The spokeman for that game (the rather annoying British bloke) oozed "I hate WoW" when he ranted about his perfect product. And while he did make me want to play WAR, a good game it did not make (... IMO).
(Isn't that my point? Look at AION, it has this (wings). Not doing so great is it.)
2. two realm pvp. A very well thought out idea. This way the pvp is lessened in some areas because some players dont want constant pvp. They want grace periods where they can get a few things done. (You need that 3rd realm or it gets too lopside. DAOC did it right, WAR did it wrong.)
3. linear cutscene gameplay. ok i can understand wanting less cutscenes, but theyre there to drive the story. You make it sound as if you only play for 5 seconds and then a 30 minute cutscene comes up. most cutscenes in mmo's are like 30 secs to a minute. depending on its importance. You still have alot of freedom on how you can play the game. (It's about immersion. If I'm in a "cutscene", I feel I'm in a linear story and not in a world. I want to feel like I am in a world.)
4. just because a game is instanced doesnt mean its not an mmo...just mean it was designed differently. Perhaps to drive the story and the pve because the game has alot of pve content(i kno hes talking about gw here ) (Too much instancing just separates you from the other players, but the point of an MMO is to share a world with other players.)
5. all characters are uber. would you rather your character be a whimp? or some sickly old man who moves like a snail? or the average joe who just works in a steel mill to earn a living and at the end of the game never lives up to any kind of greater destiny? If the character isnt a hero then theres no point to play him. Even characters that are normal in the beginning but have some tragic event happen to them or they lose some thing become uber in the end. Because theyve gone on this long quest and defied all odds to accomplish some greater goal.
(I'd rather start off ordinary or just a cut above ordinary and make something of myself. If everyone is "the chosen-hero-to-save-the-world", then gameplay feels fake and achievements seem meaningless.)
6. overly involved quests.
(If there is something for the player to read, it can be on one page. Having to click through an endless chain of quest boxes is boring and frustrating, and leads many players to ignore them.)
7.overly long tutorials. Im just gonna stop you here and say...you dumb a** you can turn off tutorials in almost every single mmo out there. In aion theres an option to never ever display tutorials again. In guild wars theres the same option.
(Not really, not without losing whatever rewards you gain from the tutorials. Frankly, I think EQ1 did it right by having tutorials out-of-game and just to show you how to move/fight/loot/talk. WOW did it okay too, with a seemless noob area and popup tooltip boxes. Some games, however, trap you for 20 frickin' levels in a tutorial. AOC?)

1. Ok, Ill give you that, winged humans are kinda silly.
2. Wow seems to be doing fine and have 2 realms. WARs problem was more: No friggin endgame even if another realm wouldn't have hurt.
3. No MMo have that many cut scenes, and Dragonage is one of the few single player game that have it.
4. Again, Wow have a lot of instances and is going more for instanced play all the time.
5. Wow is worse here than any other game.
6. Thats a dumb argument, good quests require thinking and I and many others enjoy a well written quest. The ones that you don't need to read at all and just follow the easy instructions are the crappy ones. I liked Biowares Neverwinter nights and it had what you described.
7. Wows tutorial is more or less the first 80 levels. It is boring tutorials who sucks.
None of the things you listed have any real impact on how big a game will be. A game needs to have very little bugs, good art and be fun to play, and no game has had all those 3 the last 5 years. GW2 have however but it is still a bit unclear if it will be that big since the PvE lacks raids and many people seems to love them.
And Wow itself is the biggest hit ever and still have 4 of your 7 points.

Imo, it should be:
To ensure WoW's success... keep making more threads about WoW.
Epic fail thread is epic fail.
Meh I am just going to round up WoW fanbois and put em in death camps playing Hello Kitty online.

The talk of a WOW killer is a bit ridiculous no?
I think a lot of people miss this one:
Eagerly awaiting: World of Darkness, ArcheAge.
Guild Wars 2 the new drastically different next gen mmo?

I hate to break it to you, but there is a ton of competition in this market and its only getting more competitive.
While they may have a monopoly on ravid fanbois, Blizzard does not have a monopoly on Money and Talent.
I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I played DAOC and eventually WoW and I thought WAR was going to be there love child.
But the sound didnt sync up, abilities were NOT instant and it suffered the EXACT type of bad code lag that DAOC had.
SWTOR will kill WoW. It is a WoW clone.
