Yes it is meaningful because you can build most of the best equipment with DDOs crafting.
Genrally the Shroud crafting(shroud is a mid to high level quest that produces almost all the crafting)
No it is not a profession unfortunately, crafting can be done by anyone.
It is about as much fun as putting needles in your eye. DDO "crafting" was basicly added at a time when Turbine had no content to add to the game so they put in a boring mindless grind to keep the hamsters running in the wheel. They have added other crafting but in general all are a grind and not much fun after the first few times.
"Crafting" basically serves the purpose of prolonging item grind. The best loot drops in pieces, that you click and combine at predefined spot. The actual "crafting" process is unimportant part and the "crafted" items are bound to you.
is it meaningful ? you can craft the most powerful items in the game
-how does it compare to dungeon drops ? by far better in most cases , there are exception in items like raid drops and set parts that used togther form items of greater power than green steel
-is it a true profession ? you can get very very rich farming and crafting green steel . i dont much log in to this game anymore, about 2 weeks ago i stopped in for the day and made 2 million plat selling green steel blanks just outside the shroud entry way.
-is it fun or a mindless grind ? i think its fun when i was playing this game full out i had 12 toons i used to shroud farm but then again i always have fun ingame when im making money. keep im mind it isnt only the shroud that drops green steel mats , you can find them also in shavrath " the devils" map
