First day I did tutorial quests, starting story line quest (for my 30k gil), and the tutorial +4 levequests (the ones for gear upgrades). The rest was exploring and killing along the way.

Second day was pretty much all exploring and killing as I went.

Third day was almost the same as the first character, tutorial, starting story line quests for mah cash, and tutorial levequests +4 harvesting/crafting levequests.

I dont know how you reached a surplus at level 5 to be honest, I never once hit a surplus. So let me ask you this, did you grind that entire 5 levels? and if you did, did you grind it all in the exact same spot on the exact same mobs?

Nope.  I did the starter quest until it stopped, wandered and didn't really kill anything, figured out guildleves and did 4 combat guildleves.. and on my fourth guildleve I noticed that when I was killing things I was just getting base experience.  Tried killing creatures for a while after that and still no progress.  Switched to Marauder and got normal experience but only once every ~3 kills (probably a glitch there).  Haven't done much since.. some gathering leves and a tiny bit of crafting.  Level 9, 5 Lancer, 2 Marauder, 3 Miner, 5 Botanist, a few other things at 1 and 2...

The game places a limit on how much you can gain exp per week. You get 8 hours of un interupted xp gain then 7 hours of half xp then nothing at all. The leveling system in the game is slow it will take 8 hour to get half a level to 1 level at rank 11. Just think later in the game when it will take 8 hours to get a nails length of xp. sure you can switch your jobs and it starts over but what about my main i dont want to be a glad i want to be a pugllist, if i dont feel like gathering or craftng what then do i do? The game is fun but i will not pay 13 bucks a month for a game i can only play 15 hours a week weere i actually gain somthing. Square i forgave XII i was fine with the easy and mediocre story of XIII. But this just proves that you have lost touch with how you make games and lost the connection to your loyal fans hearts because you want hardcore players to be on the same level as casual people.

Only 60 hours of (productive) fun in a month for $13? WTF were they thinking?

Let's look at it with the glass 1/2 full:

You get up to 60 hours of (productive) fun for only $13 ("unlimited" non-productive fun)! I can't get out of a non-matinee movie screening for < $13... Seems like a positive return on entertainment investment to me...  You're having fun while your playing?  It's inexpensive entertainment?  Awesome!

On that note you can also play another MMO for less (or near) per month, and be allowed to play for as long as you want.  Also with less hassle and more content.

Even better if you simply want to make a donation because you are bored, send it to charity.  At least you won't get the sence of wasted money.

Ok, so your saying you seen it say specifically 'you gain xxxx surplus xp' after level 5? Or are you saying you are not getting your class xp at the end of every kill? Your getting normal xp right, the one that goes to physical level? How about during your combat, are you getting class xp after each swing during the fight? You are also aware of the fact that you are not 100% guaranteed to gain class xp on every action/kill right? Sometimes you do, sometimes you dont, and thats from the very first kill/action on up regardless of surplus system.

The only actual reduction in xp I have yet to see is outleveling the mobs too much. I know at calss level 3 I get about 200class/400physical xp from a warf rat, but once I hit class level 5 that drops to about 100/300. However, if I move on to something a bit higher level I go back to the 200/400 again. And that differs also on the difficulty of the mob, killing a puk hatchling can easily net me 600/500.

I played for about an hour exploring and killing, the hardest thing I killed at that time was a Roseling or a Carrion Chicoe, but anyway.. my Lancer experience bar didn't go up even one experience point.  Before that it had been pretty constant, but nothing.  Maybe my character's just glitched.  It is a beta after all.

Do you know where we should be hunting in the Ul'Dah area at around class rank 5-6?  Everywhere in the area near town has those star marmots, and little else... which give little exp by class level 6.  It seems if I go east or west towards another main area, the mobs are all red and one-hit me (1100+ dmg?).  Is there somewhere I should be going?

That I dont know, haven't hit the desert yet. What I have found in the other two is 'someplace between' the first and second camps. You may have to wander past the first increase in level mobs to find a sweet spot nestled in the corner or in a cave someplace, but there are some that aren't dealing deadly to you. Also, if you tagret them and they have a colored dot above thier name, they are relatively 'normal' mobs to your class level. A colored shield above thier name is more what most would consider a 'lieutenant' mob and either have higher defense or higehr damage, or both. Unless your ready for them I'ld recomment walking around or gathering a team for them. They can be solo'ed if your good, prepared, and I'ld say 'wait for the shield to go orange' before you try. Red shield, trip back to the stone usually.

If the game comes back up tonight I am planning on making a new character for the desert. Want to try my hand at a straight combat toon this time. I'll post back here if I find an answer for you then.

Kind of irrelevant, really.  The point is that he's having a lot of fun for very little money.  Not much to complain about, IMO.  I wouldn't say there's any money wasted at all...

ill say it again, look at official press releases...... namely the latest, and get ovr the xp cap already, if uyou looked at more than flame threads all day you wouldnt have overlooked the smart ass joke square played on WoW fanboys that wer eyeballing FF14..... i wont spoil it for you. look it up

  • TelilTelil Member Posts: 282

simple answer is to stop power levelling this game and just PLAY! it seems so simple but yes it works :)

an 8 hour solid exp? well between me walking to mobs etc and doing other stuff in the game that 8 hours turns into 40 easily for me.....and i dont think i will get through that a week. and even if i do....it doesnt stop me playing the game at all.

goodbye to POWER levellers......welcome back good old GAMES players. smart move SE. then again hasnt it been said somewhere that this exp limit isnt really there?

  • DarkDemonExDarkDemonEx Member Posts: 19

almost hit the nail on the head, ther is a limit, but nothing like what everyone has been saying, as i stated if the stopped flaming long enough to look it up they would have noticed the release after that stated they pretty much released that info to flame WoW players ect thereby giving them massive amounts of exposure and ensuring power lvling idiots stayed out of there game.

    it worked

Not really worth my effort.   It was just a big run-on paragraph with a bunch of crap I heard already.

Well, the part where he compares XI and XIV to the rest of the series is relatively new, if only because most of the posters I've seen so far haven't tried to compare apples to watermelons.  I think the goals behind XI and XIV were way different than the rest of the series.

  • EVERYONE!!! Look at this link READ the 7th paragraph down in the quote....you'd be surprised at what you can find out  by reading and interpreting. http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/12068-balancing-character-growth-in-beta-3/

Ok, finally got the chance to play around Ul'dah some - found this really cool small cave tucked in the NE corner thats not on the map, think around grid 22x31. Has some really nice moles in it and a spirit occasionally (like him cause he drops cloth components). They have a decent pop rate for 2 in there, 1 its a pretty constant grind if ya like that kind of thing. Also has a small pool of water you can fish if your waiting for others to leave. This cave should work great for lvl 5-7, did for me easily.

Once you hit 7 you can move over to bind at the next camp east of there and head north towards The Golden Bazaar. Grid 21/37 and 22/37. This is a great place for solo hunting from lvl 7 to 9, maybe even 10 if you like. Solo you can't keep up with the repop here, can easily support 2-3. Coppers and Beatys, they hit pretty good at times so keep an eye on your HP, but plenty of bugs to squish. Hope this helps.

For Any of you that dont understand the xp cap system here it is below and It Clearly states that they are in the process of chaning and tweaking this!!!!!   I have a friend that has been playing the game for  almost 17hours a day since the  open beta released and he is yet to meet a cap of any sort.!!!!!

    "

This is how the progression system currently works.

This system was not introduced in Beta 3, but has been in place since the beginning of beta testing. There are several reasons why many people believe that these features were only recently implemented:

    - Leading into Beta 3, operation hours were extended, making it possible to play more often during the span of a week.

    - To encourage players to form guidleve parties in Beta 3, skill and experience point rewards for guildleves were significantly increased.

    - The process that reduced the amount of skill/experience points awarded for weak enemies attacking in groups was unintentionally removed at the start of Beta 3. (This issue has been addressed.)

That last reason in particular was the biggest cause for players running up against the threshold penalty, with characters earning far more skill/experience points than we anticipated. We also faced an issue where we were simultaneously unable to adjust the amount earned for guildleves as well as the effects of crossing each threshold.

We sincerely apologize for the lack of explanation and our failure to make the necessary adjustments in the game.

The threshold values are being reexamined, and we plan to further adjust the different rates of earnable points based on feedback from our testers. One of the top issues we are looking at right now is fixing the excessively rapid drop after crossing the eighth threshold. We also plan to improve experience point reduction rates, even more so than for skill points, considering the threshold is unaffected when changing class."
