ill say basically on the impact they had on the genre, not so much quality of the games
UO (pretty much, imo, started the mmo as we know it, granted some of the features most people liked [player housing, awesome pvp, sandbox, etc etc] arent replicated, i think it was one of the first major mmos)
Everquest (further added to the mmo genre as we know it, was once one of the biggest MMORPGS)
World of Wacraft (brought MMORPGS into the mainstream, took MMOs from "nerd you play everquest" to "you play WoW? so do i, which server?"...there are many people are dont very much like WoW [myself included because people keep trying to replicate it, saturating the market with the same crappy games] but there is no doubt that WoW has been the most successful and most influential mmo)
...now, top 3 based on how fun i think they were:
SWG, even after the nge i still got several years of enjoyment out of this game
APB...hate me if you wish, APB was the best 50 bucks i have spent in a long time, i got over 600 hours of entertainment (including beta time) was able to use the rtw point system so i had over 6 months of gametime within the first week without spending a dime, and it was what i have always wanted, a fast paced, simple, go have fun, kill people mmo, if the game had stayed a float some very cool things would have come out of it and am crossing fingers, toes and whatever limbs i can in hope that epic picks it up for real.
Third one if a toughy, but id have to say fallen earth, i only played the trial but i had a plast, due to cash issues i never got around to picking it up (until recently, waiting for it in the mail)...
1. World of Warcraf t- sorry(to all the people who just hate it) but without world of warcraft showing the world that MMO's can be playable in less than a millennium MMOs wouldnt have survived to this point in time with the new improvements like we are seeing with TOR, GW ect. WoW took on some of the old and mixed it in with warcraft and the way blizzard does things. They have set a foundation of which now countless MMOs can grow off of.
2 Dark Age of Camelot - It showed the MMO world how fun it could be PvP'n with awsome RvR. Is there anymore I need to say?
3. I cant really think one one that deserves a "of all time" title. Hmmmm
Ultima Online (pre 1999), SWG, and probably WoW. EQ would definately be in the running. These were all the gold standards of MMOs during their time. WoW may still be the standard of MMOs since so many companies still try to emulate their style.
2) WoW - vanilla (so much better when it was more MMO than "business model" and had that Horde vs Alliance feel instead of a hang out for elitist posers who are in scrum to get gear)
"If MMORPG players were around when God said, "Let their be light" they'd have called the light gay, and plunged the universe back into darkness by squatting their nutsacks over it." -Luke McKinney, The 7 Biggest Dick Moves in the History of Online Gaming
"In the end, SWG may have been more potential and promise than fulfilled expectation. But I'd rather work on something with great potential than on fulfilling a promise of mediocrity." -Raph Koster
