I am new to the FF world and am just wondering if this game is worth giving a shot? I see people saying it sucks and others praising it. I'm not sure if it is just fanboies protecting their game or trolls just trying to stir the pot.
I also realize that the game is just now launching and that there are the normal launch problems. I am asking as a long term game that I could lay down my roots and call home for a few years.
If I have never experienced the world would you recommened this game to me?
FYI: I have played a ton of MMO's and ones that stick with me are EQ2, DAOC, and yes WoW.

Its probably a little bit of both, the troll and fanbois thing. I think its highly unlikely you will learn much by reading this game sucks, or this game rocks on this forum. I did my own thing, saw videos, read about the game on their web page, did my research and my conclusion is that this game is for me. But with the bugs preventing me from trying the beta, I'm hoping to get a buddy key to see if the bugs are fixed first. It would be a shame to buy a game, for it not to work.
Try getting a buddy key, and do some research is my suggestion, good luck
If you really like/liked WoW then I suggest save your money. This game is COMPLETELY different. With that said, This game offers something totally different that is fun for Hundreds of thousands....Millions maybe who will call this place home. If you seek Great Rewards for your efforts then hop in to Eorza and check it out.

Based on the three games you listed as the ones you liked the most, you will probably not like FFXIV. I have played MMO's for a decade and enjoyed AAA type MMO's and niche MMO's like Asheron's Call, DAOC, SWG, Vanguard, LotRO, AOC and Fallen Earth...I did not care for FFXIV. But it is worth it to try and get a buddy key to at least see if you like it because you will neve truly know until you try.
Thanks for the reply. I need to ask the obvious question know....Does anyone have a buddy key for me to try the game?

I sure hope it's worth calling home, the trailer looks awesome!
It is a lot slower than most mmo's you're used to i'm sure. It's to bad you missed out on the beta, it personally wasn't my cup of tea since i wasn't a fan of the combat.
But other aspects were interesting (like crafting) I just couldn't get around the combat. You could probably watch a few combat videos of this game and decide if it's what you are looking for.
i am enjoying it immensly just hit Conj. 10 with a LS member, we're duoing our way through it and its not boring at all..
If you like games that are slower paced and a bit more challlenginig, i think you'll like it.
People either love or hate the game. As others have said, if the majority of your MMO experience comes from WoW, it's very likely that you'll hate the game since it's very, very different from what you'll be used to. I'd definitely recommend searching for a buddy key to give it a try first before you take the plunge.
If you like Eq2 and WoW then you will be sorely dissappointed with the gameplay and development of FF14 IMHO. You can find tons of details of why all over this forum and others all over the net. You just have to look at the evidence and see what the arguments for pro and con were.
Personally I think it's a lame excuse for a FF MMO and is following the trend of the last several MMO releases to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible and for the least amount of development cost as possible.

While the playerbase calls it "Hardcore mode". /sigh.
It's far closer to Everquest than it is to WoW, so if you're looking for a more WoW-ish experience then probably wait or don't bother. If you're looking for a more Everquest-ish experience then it's worth giving a shot. Just be aware that there are issues.. odd UI decisions due to a PS3 version down the road, et cetera. If you take the most moderate and least extreme ~50% of both the 'troll' and 'fanboi' opinions then you have a pretty good idea what to expect. It really depends what your tastes are.
If you're looking for a WORLD to really get into and experience.. this is the first game in a long, long time that made me feel like I was part of a world.
If you're looking for a fast paced PvE adventure hack and slasher, more along the WoW road, then this probably isn't for you right now.
Cheers and enjoy.

Call home, tell them to steer clear.
I think if you like to switch between a lot of different jobs, intermixing crafting, harvesting, and multiple fighting classes, you will have fun in FFXIV. If you want to just play one job, its just going to be a huge grind.
FFXIV also does not at all follow what has become standard in MMORPGs. The interface is quite different, you cant run an endless amount of quests up to max level, there is little direction as to what to do or how to do things. Those are just a few of the major differences from the standard modern MMO, there are many others. If you are willing to let go of certain expectations that you have for a modern MMO, then you may find yourself enjoying the game like me.
I would like to call it home, but it's very hard to get into.
The Bad:
The interface is badly designed and no matter what anyone says can easily ruin the game for many. It's just so awkward and difficult to use. It's a sandbox MMO simply because of how much time you will spend on accessing menus or trying to do simple tasks. The interface also ruins the immersion as you're unable to interact with most things in the world. Combat is fun but hard for the wrong reasons. Bad targeting alone will get you killed. You can end up cycling through 20 different NPCs until you find the one you're being attacked by. Things can be improved by Macros. But honestly, you shouldn't have to learn how to create complicated macros just to make a game playable that's what the interface should be for.
The Good
The world looks great and is smooth (depends on your rig). It feels complex and full of things to explore and see. The classes seems fun and the system allows you to try any class you want, play how you want. The way it allows you to mix skills from different classes is great. Combat is fun, very different from what you are used to in a normal MMO. It doesn't feel as slow as some people say, it's just different.

I just spent about an hour working with two linkshell members to get a level 7 item crafted, after having to comb through retainers to find a wind crystal and find npcs that sell mats, and the crafting itself was not at all a sure thing. But it was made and it is now the coolest sceptor in the world to me, and certainly the coolest lvl 7 item that I've ever owned.
If that kind of reward for effort and figuring out things is your cup of tea and you enjoy working with others, this game is the best thing ever. If you just want to click boxes on your screen over and over as you bounce between one exlamation mark over someone's head to another, by yourself and not talking to others beyond sharing a Chuck Norris joke, for months on end to max level, then no, this isn't the game for you.
Pro tip: get a controller. Remember the Ps3 people will have to get keyboards. Everybody has to get something for this game, and many will upgrade computers just to play it. But for people like me and many many others, the fun and satisfaction you get from learning and growing alongside other people in a real virtual fantasy world makes it all worth it.
Pro tip 2: Join a linkshell ASAP. The real socializing is going to go on within your ls and parties you join. And you can join more than one!
Depends on if you enjoy badly coded, terribly anti-user friendly, nigh handicapped slow, uneventful combat and grinding for the sake of grinding. Add to that you'll need to group nonstop because they just gave the mobs super high hp, and the fact that the game isn't challenging at all, and more "you're being punished for playing period".
Play it for yourself, but I'm betting on no. The only people I've known that have enjoyed this are people that said they would enjoy it and will regardless of what anyone tells them or gameplay straight out of the "how to NOT make an MMO" file.
This thead definitely needs a bump. So far it's the only one I've looked through worth reading. Thanks for the information everyone.
I'd say save your money and wait six months, or wait for "the next big thing." The game was released too early imho.
I've played all of the biggest MMOs in the past decade, and FFXI was my all-time favorite. With that being said, I am in love with this game. The graphics, for one, are absolutely outstanding. The UI is a bit clunky, and I hate the focus on the use of the mouse (probably because of my years with FFXI), but it's still outrageously fun and immersive.
