8.73 Keeps rising.... Now i am sondering, who is pushing all this hype. And when wil they start dehyping. Dehyping is so easy, make 100 accounts and all vote 0 on them.
I think it has to do with the haters being much less fanatical than the fanboys on this one. I doubt people would go through much trouble on a negative hype machine as this title doesn't really spark as much debate on this forum in comparison to something like TOR where everyone and their mailman has an opinion and is deadset to express it.
Its good that it mostly gets a positive reaction though. If I were GW2 I'd hype this product to no end as theres no subscription, if you sell a ton of initial boxes you make your money right there!
That's a terrible idea.... They won't be able to sell many expansions if they do that and expansions are their main source of income.
Exactly. I think people are reading too much into the value of initial box sales. If people end up hating GW2 after buying the box because of a content or quality bait-and-switch, guess who won't buy the next boxed expansion, which will tank the game in the long run? ANet has reasons other than needing to keep monthly subscription money coming in to ensure that their game has enough quality and content to keep players interested for the long-term.
You're judging whether or not a game will succeed based on hype. If you've been around this genre for any length of time, you would know hype is meaningless. In fact, overhype often leads to more problems.
Hype is not meaningless. Hype = box sales. In a P2P game it would mean, no matter how accepted the game is, the client is brought to the people. They will resub one day eventually. When a game is Buy2play... well...
"WoW killer"<-------- possibly the worst way that a mmorpg can be labeled. That's the way it's been since WoW pretty much became synonymous with "mmorpgs". Maybe just chilling back and waiting for the game to come out before trolling up forums about it would be a better approach. Then when it releases and doesn't magically gain 11 million players you wont be crazy dissapointed. Theres a chance you'll even be able to just play the game for the fun of it, and not because it dethroned the champion.

According to James Phinney, lead designer of StarCraft and Guild Wars, every great game starts with one question: “What do I want to play next?”. This may seem an obvious statement, but his point is that designers are often asked to make a game that is specifically designed to be “better” than a successful game from a competitor, rather than making a game that is exciting and new. How many designers have been asked to make a “GTA killer”, or a “Guitar Hero killer”, or a “WoW killer”? I personally have heard numerous designers and producers working on unreleased MMO projects describe their game in these terms: “It’s like WoW, but…” I just shake my head when I hear this, because the team that is best poised to deliver a successful game that is an evolution of WoW is… well, the WoW team. They’ve got their thing, and they’re good at it. Let’s all carve out our own thing, and be the best at it. Truly great games are made by passionate teams who are on fire with the notion of changing the industry. If you are aiming at a competitor rather than aiming to make something fresh and innovative, you’ve lost.
its hype is 8.74, which means nothing. the game could turn out to be total crap. nobody knows yet.
It,s not crap if you have watched the gameplay videos, but sure we need more things to see. Everything ArenaNet does is good,Guild wars 1 was great i have played it for 5-6 years.
I think the people who are going to be disappointed by this game are those who 1) let their expectations reach unrealistic levels, and 2) expect this to be GW 1.5. For me personally, the game has already met my expectations. This is because I set my expectations lower than others are setting them. My expectations were, "does it look fun and something i can get in do something and get out". It looks to have met those expectations, and i'm happy.
The GW1 fans who played GW2 stated of at guru that GW2 was a game that you had to let grow on you. If you go in expecting GW 1.5, you are in for disappointment. In fact, I guess some of them disliked GW2 at first because it was so different. But then as they played, the game just grew on them.
So to answer OP, no, it will not be a WoW-Killer. Nothing will be a WoW-killer, not even ToR. Those expecting it to be are immediately setting themselves up for disappointment. Rather than look at it being a WoW killer, lets look at it as "is it something that I can have fun in", after all that should be the reason you play video games.
its hype is 8.74, which means nothing. the game could turn out to be total crap. nobody knows yet.

did i say it was crap? nope. i said it could turn out to be crap. nobody knows yet. maybe if you took the time to read what i actually said you would have known that....
Hype means nothing other than box sales in the first month. I'd have thought that would be quite apparent, especially after recent years so called AAA MMO's.
I find it funny that someone is trying to claim the hype on MMORPG.com as some form of mean something. The system has been broke ever since its creation. The simple fact that anyone can / does make an account and can hype anything via it means its a joke. There are people that do nothing but create accounts just to hype a game. We seen this happen with several games in the past only to see the game fall so fast after release that it wasn't even funny.
If anything the most of the most hyped games on MMORPG.com have failed more then the less hyped games have.
So lets turn it around and say that with Guild Wars 2 getting a 8.72 it means its going to be the most epic fail in the MMO industry.
Why not wait until it's RELEASED, then see if its a WoW killer? I know, its a new strategy, its "out there", its crazy, its a bit wierd, but you know, it might just be a tad more accurate than Gamer A telling Gamer B over his headset that he thinks Game C is going to be good.
When its released next year.
Before he's even played a beta.
Or seen more than a couple of shakey videos on YouTube.

After PAX an d Gamescom it would need a deception on the scale of AoC to make your statement true.
While hype is usually just that it doesn't mean that the game is fail. It means that people have a high expectations for it.

<smiles> with no monthly sub, box sales mean everything to GW2 and arenanet.
So this means the game will succeed for arenanet
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
I really hate seeing that phrase, after browsing and lurking on these forums for so long I keep expecting to see people finally stop saying that to every new game that comes out but it always seems to happen. I love Guild Wars 2, and because of that I'd like to see what it can do on its own. Comparing it to something like WoW just makes it seem like it will be growing up in WoW's shadow trying to take it down. Arenanet and Blizzard have different fan bases, they probably overlap for some people but its just tiring to see everyone make some big contest out of each MMO and WoW.
Besides the way the WoW has been going these last few years it will be around for a while longer and if it does ever get killed, WoW will probbaly be the WoW killer. I know more people to have quit WoW because they are fed up with the changes to it than because they were actually moving to some other game. Guild Wars 2 might do great, I pray it does, but I seriously couldn't care less how it affects WoW.
Anyone else getting annoyed at the people who hype/dehype it while they have obviously done zero research on the game? Specifically the false complaints about it being instanced/developed by NCSoft.
Ex: "Looks like a combination of Guild Wars 1 and WAR, and nothing about that sounds good..."
'I didnt play this game and from the video only it made feel like i was in a game with combination of FF neverwinter nights. Awesome cant imagine how it will be when ill have my hands on it"
"I think its look like GW 1 only with some old specials from other mmorpgs (jumping and so)"
"I don't believe their promise to makie so many different scenarios can be possible. At least Rift is letting the AI determine events."
to OP . maybe its time to let this thread be? instead of edit the title whenever there is a fractional move in hype. Just a suggestion
We dropped to 8.72
Top was 8.76
I say the game is loosing interest, we need something new to get excited about...
wait when did it reach 8.76? I've never seen it above 8.74. Anyway expect this game to stay around the 8.60's for a few months since it's not likely for A-Net release anything substanial for a good few months.

with arena-net that much aware of the difference between a wow killer and a daring new game, i just wished that fans would pick up on that !

I don't care what people here hype it at. If it's good I'll play it.
Getting more and more curious about this game!
