Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Would you rather live in someone else's world or create your own?

I read a lot of complaints and suggestions for current or upcoming MMOs. It kind of makes me wonder....If a gaming company gave you the chance to create your very own MMO and gave you absolute control over everything from the game mechanics down to how often you wanted the weather to change....You just have to tell the programmers, artists, musicians, etc what you want and how you want it.

(BTW  you won't make a profit from it if you choose to make your own...everything goes to charity.)

I would be happier playing in my own MMO that I created.. Why? Because if I had my own MMO I would be rich.

I kinda like both. Problem is that many MMOs have pretty badly written lore that isn't even good enough for a crappy comic book.

But several real authors have started working on MMOs, first I know that was published were Jeff Grubb (Dragon lance, Forgotten realms) on Guildwars: Nightfall. But several other fantasy authors like R.A. Salvatore (the guy with Drizzt) have started on games now so things are changing for the better.

If i want to make MMOs, i would have chosen a career in game development.

I play MMO to be entertained, no the other way around.

I'd love to make my own, and this part wouldn't bother me.  But it's impossible, I lack the skills to create my own.  Unless those tools included the skills to use MMO creation tools, I'd be out of luck.

I edited my post. I meant for the situation to be that of you being in the director's seat. You don't need any amazing programming skills...you just have to tell your team everything that you want your world to have in it and how you want it to look and feel.

I would rather play in someone else's world due to the unknown.

If I made my own, I would like to oversee it but not actually participate on the ground level.

I would love to see a multi world MMO where mine is connected to others not like second life tho

I would love to play in my own world.  Not because I'd have godlike control or knowledge about the game, but because I would finally be able to play a polished sandbox game that's made the right way.  It's one thing we don't have in the MMO market.  That one thing is a sandbox MMO made by a company that actually has the means to support the project.  Not just the money, but the skill and intelligence it takes to create a polished, finished product.

    It will never happen though.

I would probably prefer playing in an mmo world conceived by a larger consciousness of people rather than playing my own derelict and predictable world.

There are always ideas that you can implement to create a diverse atmosphere.  Just because you created the core mechanics of the game doesn't mean it is going to be dull and boring.  You have to design it in a way to encourage a dynamic environment.

OP: Agree 100%, players are often disappointed with the amount of creative freedom THEY have in an MMO.

This does not necessarily mean that they either want to create their own MMO or must play someone else's.

But it does mean, if they are in an MMO, they should have a very rich creative flexibility on the world, their avatar and other players.

I would not choose option 1 vs option 2. I happily choose both so long as the above applies.

Option1 EG: Minecraft is very interesting how PLASTIC the environment is: IN YOUR WORLD.

Option 2 EG: Ryzom Ring is very interesting how creative the RPG/adventure is: IN SOMEONE ELSE'S WORLD

Overall, I'd like someone else to create a world but that has huge flexibility: Option 2: Full PvE ≡ PvP.

True, it's not in the spirit of expounding the OP's discussion/food for thought blardy-blah...

But there is qualitative difference in terms of being a player in a team and enjoying the game as a participant and being an official/manager/referee who has to run the game!

That's a big difference with subjective satisfactions involved and fair point despite dodging the hypothetical: If you had to choose the "blue pill or the red pill..." so yeah, it's an "unanswer" if you will.

Back on topic, MMOs have got to give players more creativity both: To produce efficient content and to do what MMOs are supposed to do: Give freedom to players to express.

I love playing other peoples mmo's and still would even if I made a MMO, however if I hade to choose one it would be to play in my own world.

I think maybe thats why I'm not interested in Sandbox MMO's. Themepark satisfy my "read a story" entertainment needs, sandboxes don't allow enough freedom. In reality you don't create anything, you manipulate what you are given. While I do wish I could control an Empire in the real world, I am more interested in landing on Mars.

im actually  a bit of both it would be great for me to do my own mmo(doing actually) but without someone elses help in doing so it would get boring. Think of it if you know how to do everything and how to beat the lvl cap fast , then whats the fun in playing the game?

I'd be more entertained by seeing my own creation come to life than to play someone else's. A lot of games and movies these days seem to lack a lot of creativity. Everyone likes to rehash the same old stuff disguised as something new. If I could lend my ideas to someone capable of creating an mmo world or movie out of it...I think I'd be in tears. I'd be like, "That was the best freakin MMO or movie I've experienced in my whole life".

  • MrMxyzptlkMrMxyzptlk Member Posts: 141

You have to admit gamers suggest so many things that it's almost as if they want to create their own game. In WoW for example people have complained that the graphics are too cartoony... "my character doesnt do enough damage..my character needs a certain skill...why can't I fly in this area....the bosses aren't smart enough...dungeons are too short...too long...too hard...I need cooler looking armor.."  the list goes on and on.

No, I wouldn't work as a lead game designer for free.  Creativity gets harder to manage when you're starving...

Besides that, there's no shortage of ideas in the game industry, so getting to the point where a company is going to give you full creative control of your own IP would be rare, but since we're still in the hypothetical realm...

No, I still wouldn't.  My own imagination is far more flexible than anything that could be programmed into a game.  I'd be tired of my own ideas before the game development was complete, and wouldn't care to play through them.  I can experience more of my own worlds through my own imagination.  I find it more interesting to experience worlds created by the imaginations of others, which may in turn, inspire my own.

I'd go down in history as the first director assassinated by her team.

Yes, I want these customizations.  Oh, and these.  No, more of them.  Say, a few thousand...each?  And players can do this.  And have this.  And be this.  And be all of this.  Yes.  If they really want to spend the next five years glued to a chair, they can do everything.  But you have to balance it so new players coming in will still be viable.  Yep, get to work on that.  I'll expect a solution by Tuesday.

No, no, you don't understand.  Not one dynamic world.  Each player gets her own dynamic own world.  As in one planet per player.  Yes, interactive.  Growing food, building cities, mining, industry, all that.  With customizable defenses.  And then other players can attack each other's planets and destroy or steal what they've built.  How?  Depends on what their skills are.  But balance.  Make sure it's all balanced.

But yes, of course they can land and roam around on the surface of their own planet and on the surface of anyone else's planet (if they can survive the defenses).  And do what there?  Well, whatever they want, I guess.  Maybe they don't want to attack their neighbor.  Maybe they just want to pick flowers.  Or go hunting.  Or have a picnic.  They'll think of something, I have faith in them.

Flying around in space anywhere, and landing at will?  Of course!  Get to work on it.

I have plenty of ideas for an MMO and have an entire pretty well though out mmo in my head. I'm also studying game design and should be graduating some time next year and looking to start in the industry and work my way up to mmo's. Being able to build my own MMO would be a dream come true.

However I wouldn't want it to be just mine, I'd want people to work with who have briliant ideas of their own. Someone who can give you honest and constructive feedback is key to refining a good idea.

I'd also want to have players involved; feedback forums, ideas forums, even player created content like new skins for weapons etc.

Would I like to sit in the big development chair, in charge of the direction we're taking and what gets put in game? hell yes.

Would I like to sit in the only development chair while everyone just laps up my awesomeness? not really.
