I didn't like the tunnel, but it would have been acceptable had the light at the end been three factions!
Three factions would not have solved any of WARs problem would have only made things worse, problem with 3 factions is the you have devolop even more content, make balance even more impossible and further dilutes population.
You don't need to come up with big theories as such.
The game already falls short in its simplest animation and combat features.
I mean fire it up and start playing and at level 8 go for a scenario and in between do some PVE fights.
Then start playing a BG in WoW. i mean: everyone can see the obvious. It simply couldn't stand the test against the game it tried to copy in the first place.
You really had to be a blinded fan at launch time, but these days, come on guys, that animation and UI was supposed to get 3 million players from WoW ?
Hype is so limited in time. No surprises here.
WAR wasnt trying to copy WoW. Maybe you have and maybe you havent been here long enough to see the discussions. But I dont feel like explaining the long history of WARhammer and how it relates to WoW.
Graphics were good. The UI was good (looking). A million other things were just broke.
Where did you get the 3 million players number?
At the time of WAR's release Blizzard had about 6million people. Mythic we're trying to 'claim' all these players from WoW.
WAR's failure was it was made by Mythic, whose only good games we're Spellbinder & Dark Age of Cameltoe.
Mythic got lucky with DAoC, then they released ToA and killed it.
Yeah lucky, like all those designers rolled dice to see what features were going to go into the game. You sound like a AshersonsCrap fan.
Mythic simply did not have the experiance to handle large scale project like WAR. Yes they devoleped DAoC which was suprise hit and a relatively small in terms of budget, they spent only couple million on DAoC where was WAR was 50 million+. So looking back it wasn't suprise WAR failed to live upto expectations.
You cant make fair comparisons of experience between Mythic then and EAMythic.
Experience comes from people and people make up these companies.
And different people made up Mythic than made up EAMythic. Or do you not remember all the people that EA cut, or people who left with check in hand?
I know everyone has all the answers after the fact. Were all experts looking back. Its easy to see now. The honest answer, there were many reasons the game didnt even come close to meeting modest expectations.

What the heck are you talking about? EA acquired Mythic they did not fire or let go know of anyone. In fact there is thread on WHA where one of devolopers confirms in late 06 that none of the devolopers left after the acquisition. All lead devolopers from Mythic were still part of EA Mythic and they hired a few more resources.
So yes Paul/Mark were still running Mythic, what EA did was simply gave Paul more cash to iron out WAR. I think you are confusing the layoffs in 09 when Mythic was merged with Bioware with 2006 acquisition.Anyway IMO EA blew it they should have never bought Mythic they also got suckered in by the hype and did not due diligence to see if Mythic could deliver on it.

At this point, I cant remember. You may be right. I remember a ton of threads about people leaving when the merger was happening and no I am not talking about the Bioware merger. At this point I couldnt care enough to go and look it up.

You mean to say M&A adviser? No i am not one but i am a investor and followed EA and consensus was their acquistion of Mythic was a bad one. Anyway back on topic as i said WAR had many flaws but the root case of the failure was lack of experiance dealing with large scale project. There was lot of good ideas in the game but pieces simply did not come together to make a good MMO.

Looking at what I posted, I was being a bit of a douche and I agree that there were many problems.
Something else I noticed, you see how many pages and how many opinions there were on this one thread? For a game that is slowly dying.
In other words, you see how many people really wanted WAR to succeed. I am no expert, but for me, it lends proof that people will play a mmo with heavy amounts of pvp, the customers are there.
I wanted to play WAR, played for a year, and then i decided that i had enough of Mythics failures in delivering something with 1% with the depth and quality that the Warhammer universe deserves.
WAR's biggest failure? The dev team and GM for allowing such a thing to happen. Look at DoW / DoW II and look at WAR, well one is a MMO and the other a SP with Online components but, past that look at the depth and quality, you actually feel you are in a war in DoW, in war i felt i was in a debug session mixed with a tom tom version of a game were all you did was walking along a road to fullfil missions and have "some" pvp/rvr.
Hopefully the game is better now, but boy, in the begining WAR was so much of a disapointment....
Speaking as someone who is pretty much a PvE player only...
1. The PvE is horrible. There was just no focus on making it any good and there still isn't.
2. Public quests are cool, but there never seemed to be enough people around to complete them.
3. The gear sucked. I know some people disagree, but I LIKE GEAR. I like lots of it to choose from. I like my character to look cool. As shallow as some may think it, I love acquiring a shiny new piece armor. It's an incentive. It's makes you feel like you made progress even if you are a ways from leveling. It just wasn't there in this game form my experience.
4. The graphics and animation are not very good. It is very unpolished in general in this area. See my comment below about the art book.
5. Combat is not that enjoyable. I think this is because of the animation, sound, and uninteresting mobs. I never felt like I was hitting anything and kicking butt.
In my opinion, the best thing about WAR is the cool art book that came with the collector's edition. I never saw anything in-game that was as cool as the concept art in this book.
I don't think those things really had anything to do with it. Mythic had everyone's attention at release and they blew it. That's all there is to it, and you really don't ever see any second chances in this industry.
The end-game was straight up broken for a long time. The RvR system just wasn't complete and definitely wasn't ready for the small tier 4 starting population. So tier 4 was probably bleeding subscriptions near to the number of new players just reaching it. PvE was also broken. We gave that a shot before finally dropping the game. The dungeons were lame, the bosses were extremely buggy and the loot system sucked.
All of these things could be fixed now, but it's probably too late.
Waaaaaaay to much pve focus in a pvp centric game, thinking endgame and PQ gear set drops.
An inept original dev team who spent more time shouting and arseing around on youtube videos then actually working on the game.
Only two realms.
WAR had things going for it, like it's base combat mechanics, but it had some serious issues which have little to nothing to do with it being overhyped.

I agree with you. As time goes on, the companies are trying to create a game for as little money, and get as much profit as possible. It's kinda sad.
Only played for 1 year? That's a solid chunk of investment to be made in a game, especially one that's two years old.
A witty saying proves nothing.

Marcus
WAR players hate pve and avoid it at all costs.
1) Performance
2) Overpowered classes (bw) and/or not well ballanced
3) Too much rvr/pvp oriented and not many pve options (poor crafting) as a result the game lacks inmmersion.
These are in my opinion war´s biggest failures.
Dont think hype was a factor.
