A Interesting set of discussions have been occuring among me, my co-workers and my friends. With Cacaclysm now scheduled to launch on 12/7/2010 and ToR (The Old Republic) presumed to be launching in Febuaray 2010,I have been asking people which game is going to be the smarter finacial decision for this coming holiday season.
I am an avid WoW player and am unsure if its going to be smart to get Cata and pass up ToR. Or to skip Cata and just wait for ToR to come out.
It is both unreallistic time wise and financially to buy Cata ($40) play for 3 months ($39), Total $79, only to quit and pick up a new game upon release.
I mainly don't want to quit WoW because who would want to quit a game that is still fun for you but, ToR is the new big thing and I have very high hopes that it is not going to follow down the road to near death like many other MMORPG's out there.
Between all of us we have been having some rather good debate/discussion about this whole ordeal and I figured I would open it up to others to just get some external perspective.
So what do you guys think is going to be the smarter decision to make come this winter.

for you, WoW is the obvious choice.
If you have a job, I fail to see why you cannot buy both.
But I guess to add to the discussion, if you assume you are going to play TOR, then it would be financially smarter to just wait for TOR. But do what you want. Cata is going to kick ass and I doubt you would want to miss out on that.
If you're still having fun in WoW, then CATA is the way to go.
I very much doubt WoW and GW2 for that matter to come out in Q1 2011, Q2 seems far more likely, Rift seems to be the earlier bird of these upcoming MMO's. Besides, you don't have to play TOR right at launch, sometimes it's smarter to give it a month or 2 and wait out the infamous launch lag and chaos.

For you i would say stick with WoW and play through it. I see no advantages to leaving a game you like as well as the impacts you will suffer should you play ToR. If you play ToR you will fall behind in WoW compared to your friends and guild. You will have essentially ruined both games experiences, by falling behind in the one you like and not giving the new game your all. Play through the WoW content, and it if you feel you need to play ToR, you can start mentally fresh with it knowing you did everything you needed to in WoW. also by playing through WoW you'll get past that initial 3-6 months of bug's instabillity and get a better ToR play experience when you join it in say June 2011.
Why wouldnt you want to play cataclysm or ToR get them both and see which you like best. But I do agree with Havok cata will kick ass and make wow a much harder game to beat but ToR will be great aswell. Read some reviews and watch some gameplay on both then make a decision.
Playing: WoW
Waiting On: SWTOR, GW2, Rift, TERA.
Where are you getting February 2011 from as a release date for SWTOR? Last time I checked, February wasn't in the Spring.

I was simply using Feb as a date for arguments sake
He said February 2010, so I think we all missed it somehow
To the OP, I would say Cata will be out long before SW:ToR so you have plenty of time to get into the new content...
Yeah but then you're having to choose between two games whose release dates are going to be roughly 4+ months apart, giving you quite a bit of time (in my opinion) to play one while you wait for the other.

Play and enjoy Cataclysm! There's is pretty much no way ToR will actually be released in February of next year (Unless EA forces them out the door half finished) That's only 4 months away. They would have to go gold within the next 3 months. It's definately not ready - unless what's on their internal servers is SO far ahead of the closed beta - as to make the closed beta essentially worthless.
No I think most people, like myself, noticed it but had the common sense to assume it was a typo since that date is irrelevant now.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?
