Honestly how can one resist a game with such lush graphics and vibrant gameplay?

I'll tell you what the real threat to WoW will be... Guild wars 2, a game that is currently on the works and it is not currently known when it will come out, and here is why:

GW was designed by ex-blizzard employees, they even helped in the development of the first stages of WoW... they designed battle net, they helped in the creation of diablo, starcraft and the warcraft series. We can only speculate how good GW2 will be based on the level of quality that the current GW game series provide, here are some things to consider about the current Guild Wars:

The game looks spectacular, and can run decently on low end computers just like WoW.

Its engine is way better programmed, never crashes, takes little space in your hard drive, and it loads very fast.

PVE is amazing, the quests and the zones are beautiful, it has great music, and it is a pleasure to explore the world. The game can be very tactical, and it in terms of difficulty, it would make your average WoW hardcore raider cry on his knees.

PVP is balanced... yes... the game is very balanced, and very well thought out when it comes to PVP combat. There are no overpowered abilities or class combos etc. Skill is the only thing that matters... One thing that WoW needs to learn from GW is not to balance PVE around PVP! In GW certain skills are specially altered when a person enters pvp combat.

Gear is not a big factor in GW... What matters is your skill set and the way your distribute your attributes. There is no such thing as endgame gear in GW that will make you able to roll your face on the keyboard while laughing at players or pve monsters.... In GW if you don't pay attention to what your are doing you are a goner... The game forces you to use your brain.

You can solo everything in the game (Theoretically) with the add of computer controlled henchmen and heroes (special NCPS that you can manually control and gear) you don't need people to quest around or do instances.

GW has no monthly fees!.

GW has over 6 million subscribers... I know I know... WoW has 11 million... But at least it is safe to say that GW has a healthy population level.

----

In spite all of its advantages, GW lacks a very crucial thing that WoW has... raids and the massive amount of content. You can only have up to 8 players in your party for either pvp or pve, also, another factor that some people do not find appealing, is that the game is instanced, meaning that when you get out of towns and go out into the world you get your own copy of the world, so you won't run into other players in the middle of your quests of explorations.

Guild wars 2 has promised to address all these negative factors while bringing new stuff to the table... If they do it right, GW 2 will really become serious competition for WoW.

I think both games cater to different types of players.

    Time will tell.

Seriously? I'm so tired of the "X" game is going to kill World of Warcraft argument. Firstly, it's never going to happen and secondly, who really cares? I don't say that to be rude or mean but what difference does it really make as long as games like Guild Wars 2 or Finaly Fantasy XIV have a healthy customer base. I'm pretty sure that's all that's important. I've played World of Warcraft off and on. The truth is that I couldn't tell the difference between the game having 11 million subscribers and 400,000  subscribers. I do wish Guild Wars 2 all the luck in the world as I'm sure it'll do fine but... it really doesn't matter how many subs it's gonna get... but it's not going to get more than World of Warcraft and WoW isn't about to die anytime soon.

GW has 0 subscribers.... it's not a subscription game.  Not only that it was an awful game, and not worthy of calling itself an MMO.  Nothing is going to kill WoW.

And what exactly is 'vibrant gameplay'?  lol 'lush graphics'?  really?  Vegetation can be lush, colors can be vibrant.  And no one knows anything about how GW2 really plays.  FF14 has good graphics, but it doesn't really help it out.

Only thing ever going to kill wow is EA.

Any other games that come out  will nibble around the edges, but that is all. No other game will kill it.

  • C0MAC0MA Member Posts: 522

nothing will kill wow... we live in a world where more than 1 thing can reign supreme....

We have Football the most popular US sport... yet we still have basketball and baseball

You have UFC/MMA real fighting... yet you still have millions upon millions of people into fake fighting wrestling WWE and TNA.

WoW is it's own entity, it's not going anywhere for a LOOOOONG time.  When WoW does shrink down to minimal subscribers it'll launch a graphics update and go f2p with a cash shop... gain another 10 million players and never go anywhere until yout kids kids are dying of old age...

I don't want it to kill WoW, The WoW players need to stay in WoW with their padded walls :P hehe

I wouldn't want any game to kill any other game, I think GW2 is less likely to do so than some other game in the future, reason being there is no sub to GW2 so you can carry on WoW (insert any other sub game here) without worrying about it. If the question is will it be big then judging from the hype and reception across the gamer community then yes it's going to be big and rightly so :)

Pardon a newb questions but is GW2 not going to be "instanced" like GW was? I really hated GW because of the way it was instanced and have honestly been avoiding having anything to do with GW2 thinking it was going to have that as well.

  • yoyoyoblakayoyoyoblaka Member Posts: 199

It won't, guild wars 1 didn't and they came out around the same time. I don't see this game having lasting power for the same reasons guild wars 1 didn't.

But seems like like 80% of the posters on this forums are WoW reject GW2 fanbois.

It also amazes me how much people talk about this game like it is already out. Talking about how amazing the gameplay is.. like really? I'm going to save up the popcorn for when this games open beta launches cause it's going to be a shirt storm on these forums.

    Quite the opposite.

the only thing that will kill wow is blizzard them selfs, either by producing utter bullcrap content, which that wont happen and even if it does the wow fanboys will still play it and the other is wow shutting down the servers, which i doubt it will happen in the next 5 years.

No.  Dungeons will be instanced but the world will be open.

Actually, fairly accurate.  I too thought it was a medicore from an MMORPG perspective, more of a game really than a world.

GW2 is the game I'm looking forward to the most, but I won't gush over something that we've not had a chance to see yet.

WoW will fizzle out when it is ready, the only real threat to WoW is another MMO by Blizzard - even then people will still play WoW.

  • SweetZoidSweetZoid Member Posts: 437

Well,WoW isn't that great. Skill animation sucks and combat is lame and everything,GW2 combat looks so fun and action like.

People really dig the gameplay demos they've seen and like the design decisions they've heard.  Hardly amazing unless you're thick between the ears.

Ask me again after it releases.  I'll buy it... for the money and no sub-fees, who wouldn't?

It will be interesting to see how it pans out.  Beyond that is just speculation.

I wonder what the next WoW 'killer' will be when GW2 releases, and doesn't kill it?

Every MMO in development is a wow killer to that particular games fan base. I'm pretty sure the most dominant wow killer to date is and always will be... the affection of a woman and more important things to do in life.

Stop with these threads, it only attracts flaming as the expression is a taboo.

Sincerely even me being a fan of GW2 dont like this expression, no mmo is killed because of other mmo, but yes for old age or gameplay issues...
