This is true. Can looked at the MA in CoX. Sure, some of them come down to being subjective - but some of them are pure garbage.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
I edited my post. I meant for the situation to be that of you being in the director's seat. You don't need any amazing programming skills...you just have to tell your team everything that you want your world to have in it and how you want it to look and feel.
I'd go down in history as the first director assassinated by her team.
Yes, I want these customizations. Oh, and these. No, more of them. Say, a few thousand...each? And players can do this. And have this. And be this. And be all of this. Yes. If they really want to spend the next five years glued to a chair, they can do everything. But you have to balance it so new players coming in will still be viable. Yep, get to work on that. I'll expect a solution by Tuesday.
No, no, you don't understand. Not one dynamic world. Each player gets her own dynamic own world. As in one planet per player. Yes, interactive. Growing food, building cities, mining, industry, all that. With customizable defenses. And then other players can attack each other's planets and destroy or steal what they've built. How? Depends on what their skills are. But balance. Make sure it's all balanced.
But yes, of course they can land and roam around on the surface of their own planet and on the surface of anyone else's planet (if they can survive the defenses). And do what there? Well, whatever they want, I guess. Maybe they don't want to attack their neighbor. Maybe they just want to pick flowers. Or go hunting. Or have a picnic. They'll think of something, I have faith in them.
Flying around in space anywhere, and landing at will? Of course! Get to work on it.
I would play your game! Sounds like fun!
In other news though, I spend time with other gamers and especially my father who is a gamer as well. He is not as advanced in his "skills" though, so it is fun to see his side of the perspective when we talk about games and MMO's especially.
In that regard, I have often told him of my ideas of creating my own MMO. If I had unlimited assets, I have no doubt in my mind I would make the best MMO the world has ever seen. I would not make it alone though, I would gather other gamer's opinions, etc, and filter through the good and the bad. I have been playing MMO's for over 15 years, not saying I know everything there is to know about MMO's but I would say I am a veteran.
I would be happier playing in my own MMO that I created.. Why? Because if I had my own MMO I would be rich.
I already killed the money approach by saying that it was an MMO that gave all profits to charity
Well i would have to vote no on it then. I would rather play somebody elses, mine would be a piece of shit. Some f2p snatch and grab money making scheme.

I don't know how far away from beta it is, but it sounds like almost everything I'd like to see in a game. Someone linked it in a thread a week or two ago.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Sometimes it's the journey that's more fun than the destination.......I've found out that I'm the type of person that actually has more fun creating than reaping the benefits of my creation.
I used to write tons of short stories when I was bored in high school. It was free style so I never actually knew what was going to happen until I reached the next sentence of my story. One idea always branched off to another and another. Even this computer that I'm using was actually more fun to me building than actually using (especially after an MMO I was anticipating failed me).
I can imagine that a persistent world that you can constantly alter to your liking would never get old as long as you develop fresh new ideas. For instance, you might create a peaceful rural town one day and the next day decide to sacrifice them all to a feral gnome clan.
I am not really sure. Probably a little bit of both but at the same time i would love to make my own world. I could correct every flaw that i personally see in MMOs today while creating a land inhabited by my creations. It would be pretty cool. And none of this expansion stuff with small updates in between. I would make the world fully created and let players discover things and shape their world. While i could also write a storyline that could have decisions for the players to make. Do you kill the last dragon in the world? Do you blow up this planet that is full of innocent people?
Could even have people from my development team, or myself, come into the game as a powerful monster that would require a bunch of players to come together and kill.

lol that reminds me of an old EQ event that the GMs tried to do. The event took place around mistmoore (a creepy gothic castle area) and had a script that could be heard throughout a few zones. The GMs were controlling the event characters that were returning to mistmoore for some reason. Meanwhile 100ish regular players were following them around and watching the event unfold. The event ended prematurely when a player decided to attack the GM in disguise and then the rest of the players ganged up and eventually killed them.

Haha that sounds awesome. I think games are kind of lacking special things like that now adays. They are mostly replaced by seasonal quests and pre expansion quests i guess.

This is something that might swing me back to Option 1 from Option 2 and create my own mmo world, allowing it to be populated by players with perma-death but very fair integration of this feature. I'd then without telling the players log in unofficially as some random monster and see how many players I could finish off. Adding just enough fear to the world, to keep players coming back for more...
I would be helpful I'n the early concept stages of mmo development but after that my lack of game design knowledge would make a project suffer. I'm not a artist or a coder I could assist with music since I am a musician but other than that nadda.
I read a lot of complaints and suggestions for current or upcoming MMOs. It kind of makes me wonder....If a gaming company gave you the chance to create your very own MMO and gave you absolute control over everything from the game mechanics down to how often you wanted the weather to change....You just have to tell the programmers, artists, musicians, etc what you want and how you want it.
(BTW you won't make a profit from it if you choose to make your own...everything goes to charity.)
Honestly I'd rather play in someone else's world but I'll still have an opinion after seeing how they've done things good or bad. The reason I'd rather play in someone else's is because if I created the world what mystery and exploration could I truly find? What challenge could there truly be?
I don't think most rational players want absolute control over everything, but they do want Devs to keep their players in mind and discover the kind of things their players enjoy.
Instead of a gaming company building a game where I've decided every detail, how about a gaming company that sits down and discusses the design philosophy, mechanics and such with the players and answer questions. Find out what their intended player base is interested in and what they aren't.
To be honest this is one of the reasons I played UO for so long (10+ years). It boiled down to the fact that the devs came into the Stratics forums and actually discussed things with us. I mean when the Stygian Abyss expansion was being developed they discussed a great deal of it with us and answered questions. They even broke things down and discussed with us how some of the mechanics would work and took our input to heart when finalizing it.
How about instead of letting players design the game and the world they just allow us to be a part of it instead of feeling like a temporary visitor?
I'm more of a rulesystem junkie, with little use for lore and roleplaying.
So yeah, if I would create a world, I wouldnt care about these things, but leave them to others. Just as long as the core mechanics are good, the world is rich of diversity (many races, many different opponents, many different environments etc), the encounters are challenging.
Thats why not much mysticism would get lost if I would play in my own world. ;-)
I'd love to be put in the director's seat. Everything going to charity would actually make things easier, because the focus would always be on creating the best possible game, not just selling it to the most people.

I voted for my own, knowing that what I would envision, like, and thoroughly enjoy - may not be what somebody else would...
...but at the same time, I know I'm not enjoying anything out there right now - so it is rather moot.
edit: Oddly enough then, I think in the end - I would prefer a persistent online single player game...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
LOL
Anyways, HELL YEAH I WOULD MAKE MY OWN. It would be epic.

I do not know.
Game design is different from design implementation.
I have watched several games being discussed before they are released, and thought, hmmm, that feature sounds cool! This will be a fun game!
But, it turns out the feature is not actually fun when you play the game.
So I don't know. Maybe my design would be fun, maybe it would suck.
BOTH.
While I can think of some great ideas, having input from other ideas helps make my own better or gives me inspiration to think of more.

Definately would prefer to live in my world, unfortunately there isn't any computers that meet the minimum system requirements of my world.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

I would combine the best ideas I saw in other games to create an even better one.
