Hello!
Nixish here, caught up in another one of my self-serving brainstorming sessions on the topic of the enjoyment of player looting. I have become ever so deeply curious as to how the community feels on the topic, so I have created a poll to help me collect data. I feel this poll will help those who wish to stay anonymous do so, and the more vocal crowd may chip in as always.
Regardless of your opinion in the matter, I appreciate feedback. If one of the options is worded a little funny/confusing or you have an option you feel should be up here, please let me know.
Civil trolls only please

Probably a bad time with the FFXIV NDA lift =X
I find it difficult to answer your poll as you ask about full looting and sandbox as if they are one in the same.
so I can't adore sandbox but hate full looting?
Or love full looting but hate sandbox?

Conceptually a fair question, but I dont know of any games which are truly concidered 'sandbox' by the masses and dont have full loot.
Are there any? I could just have overlooked it on a pass one day.
I like sandbox games, the full loot depends on the circumstances and construction of the game. I play EVE, although not full loot, it is the next thing closest to full loot. I dont mind the looting in EVE, its not really a seeling point to me nor is it a terrible thing either. To me its a small thing in the scope of the game and therefore, easy to accept. The game really isnt about what you can loot from combat, its about the combat itself.
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
I couldnt' say. But there is always a "going forward" to consider.
Would I play a sandbox game where I just have to log in and figure out my course? Sure.
would I play a full loot game? No.
Also, the argument of what a sandbox game is seems to rage back and forth. I consider Lineage 2 a sandbox game because it allows the player to figure out his/her own game play. You don't collect quests, go out nad do them and collect more.
You have player politics, trading, crafting, control over castles, fortress alliances, Shifting enemies and friends.
Essentially the play is up to the player.
but it has classes and some are even gender locked. One can't solely be a crafter and never fight as you need to fight to raise your level. So it has some negatives in the sandbox column.
Also, in the end, it isn't out of the realm of thought that there would be a themepark game with full looting. I doubt it will happen but it could be a concept game.

Would for sure make an interesting test to see if the theme park FL could hold a measurable playerbase, but I'd agree- theme park suggests emphasis on gear and people would equate that to real time lost. Theme park FL is interesting, but would happen at half past never.
So how far dipping into one side or the other would you go for your perfect game? What features or attributes do you enjoy best? You seem to enjoy what you feel makes L2 sandbox. Would that game work without classes or is it centered around them?
I am interested in the sandbox concept, but full loot turns me away

I would play a full loot which is not a sandbox but I may not play a sandbox which has full loot.
Full looting does not a sandbox make. No more than having an auctionhouse make a game a themepark MMO.
That said, the reason why the majority of current sandbox MMOs aren't doing as well, is specifically because of the FFA PvP and full looting model. Proponents of these design choices don't want to admit it, but they open up a pandora's box for griefing, vastly greater than the alternative.
If a lot of the so called sandbox bigshot MMOs offered more non-PvP, non-full loot options for gameplay, they would probably be more popular.
I love the sandbox concept, and I thought I enjoyed full looting. Then after playing Darkfall for a few months I realized it's not as enjoyable as I thought. I didn't hate it, because at times after a good, long fight it was enjoyable to loot your rewards and be surprised at your goods collected. However in the same breath, it sucks when you get gang-raped from behind and are dead with all your belongings gone in less than 10 seconds.
That personal discovery made me realize I much prefer there being a loot system in place for PVP, but not full-loot. I enjoyed Asheron's Call PVP looting system. Not full-loot, and if I recall you only dropped the items that vendored for the most. Death items were wonderful; trashy useless items with a hell of a price tag. But I did actually enjoy that system.
You get all those benefits of "travelling and playing smart" personal thrills, the adrenaline rush (if you wanna call it that) from intense "meaningful" PVP, but if you do fudge up at least you're not naked. But you still feel it. I like that. Breaks the monotony of pointless deaths, and deaths resulting in my inventory containing zilch.
That being said, I enjoy PVP. I can enjoy a dedicated PVE game just as much.
That sounds appealing to me actually. Hopefully a current developer will implement something like this.
Could use more votes on the topic before I release another poll. (will be collective information)
Keeping this alive. New poll to be written within the next couple days over a side-topic.
Full loot, is it that hard to use an ig bank to store your stuff?
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Do explain good sir!
What youre saying is to pvp with nothing on, which defeats the purppose of having full loot in the first place, no?
Player-looting is a must in a MMO like EvE Online, as otherwise the playerdriven economy wouldn't work as intended.
In MMOs without the playerdriven economy, player-looting is pointless.
What about player-driven economy like FFXI where there is no notable PvP whatsoever? (dont attempt to defend, fanboys. I know otherwise)
The economy is almost entirely propelled by the player.
I'm not saying that at all. I'm alluding to the fact that you should simply bank the things that you do not need on you. There is little point running about with large amounts of gold on you unless you are specifically going to buy something. There is little point in carrying valuable items on you that you do not foresee yourself using any time soon.
If people use a bit of caution, hould they be killed and looted it doesn't amount to a big deal itemwise.
Recently a player got suicide ganked in Hi Sec in EVE, losing a ship and parts worth upwards of 30 billion isk. Did he moan, did he cry? No he knew the risks and got on with it.
