Actually I think what the reviewer basically said was "Seriously? You call this release ready? Come on SE! You should know better! It's 2010 ffs! This might have flew oh, 8 years ago, but seriously?! Half this stuff doesn't even work and what does work is made frustrating due to poor design decisions.... Did you bother testing? At all?! Are you *trying* to piss off your customers?"
And yeah, I know a few people who play the game feel hurt by the review given, but come on.... Square knew that the game was going to be slammed due to the state it was in that they sent out letters to reviewer asking them to hold off reviews for 30 days so they could net as much sales as possible as well as get time to do what should have been done in beta; fix the issues.
If this were any other game, you and many others who defend this game and cry foul over the poor reviews would suddenly be cheering the reviewer and bashing the company for doing *exactly* what SE did with FFXIV.

Whether you like the game or not, at least recognize that SE is pulling stunts to increase revenues and hold their feet to the fire to try to get them to behavior better in the future. SE is not part of your family. They are a corporation beholden by money first and producing their goods second. Stop defending bad behavior on their part.
Fans of the game...pull yourselves out of your shoes and at least separate style issues from functional issues. Deep down you know that SE is treating you badly. Don't take it. Deep down you know that a company telling reviewers to wait 30 days is shoveling a pile. If it isn't ready for review, then it isn't ready for them to take your money...ask for some compensation back. Don't think SE is a good company, tell them that they need to become a good company...and hold them accountable for what they do.
5-6 hours tweaking your graphics and OC your "new" GPU. . you don't think that is a problem?
Aside from that I found your post imformative and may still give the game a shot. The only part that threw me off and made it seem less unbiased was the character creation part where you say "I will be honest". . . that suggests the rest is biased for sure. Semantics I know, but it made me doubt the validity of the entire thing.

Thats the problem with fans of a game. They love their game, and it's understandable. What isn't understandable is being defensive and apologetic for the company when said company pulls something like this.
The reviewers are calling SE out for releasing a bad game and expecting people to pay money for it. SE doesn't care about you, me or anyone else because people are buying the product. Fans and apologists will say anything to defend SE because they are loyal to the company/game which makes SE think "Well hell... we can release the game as is and still make a killing!"
What the fans and apologists fail to notice is that other companies see this and think 'Well, if SE can get away with it why can't we?'. It has gotten to the point of being acceptable to even release console games half finished and then expecting players to patch up later to enjoy the game as it should have been at release.
But god forbid a reviewer say anything bad about a game when the game warrants it.... We should all just accept what we get and not make a whimper as the studios bend us over. Instead we should be saying 'thank you, can I have more!'....
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I like the game becuase of the complexity. I don't feel like I am at the age of ten playing it. I actually had to figure out a few things and talk to several, UNMARKED, npc's to get places. The game is extremly populated with one of the best cultires I have seen sense DAoC. Can't wait for the updates. I'll keep playing. And, I agree with the OP. I think, because of the population, and how long people can play in this game, they won't be spending time on the forums talking it up. Why? Becuase they want to play. *shrug*
Im sorry to say this but that is always such a BS reply !
When i play a MMO i ALWAYS use forums to talk about it.Wether it be about problems or quest help ,prasing the game or complaining about it or just to check if i am the only one with a specific issue.Especially if the game is new and trust me MOST DO THIS.
Unless a game is SO GOOD that players refuse to alt-tab out of a game or stop visiting forums for months but im sure FFXIV is not that good )
about that population ,yeah even the worst MMO's inhistory had a full house during the release period >.>
So a game hopper hops in first day and loves it. Who woulda thought that? All these reviews are pointless even the professional ones since its the individual that decides if a game is of quality or not. FFXIV will find its niche. Will it find as big a audience as XI? Doubtful but a decent niche all the same.
So true and the reviews is what started this round of fanboy vs. troll which is going to get us nowhere really. Let's face it those who thought this game was going to save them it won't unless you want to play in that niche, otherwise let's let the fans enjoy the game they have. I mean insulting people who like the game isn't going to accomplish anything so why not focus on what can, letting SE know what you don't like about the game. And the same goes for fans of the game why spend so much time on the forums defending this game which you have no ownership of? If you like the game play it and realize 2/3 of the people trynig it aren't liking it and will complain.
At the end of the day I see alot of people making unrefutable points on both sides of the debate but still have to wonder why the debate is being staged like this.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Actually less than you think, less than 25% of players actually post about the game. Forum goers are the 'very vocal minority' and that's pretty much across the board. Most people will pick up a game play it, either stick with it or trash it, and never look at a forum from a read/write perspective.

You did make a good poiny by saying MMO's, upon release, have a large population and slowly dwindles away becuase people don't like it. However, I do not agree with you about the postings. I'm sure you ALWAYS use forums to discuss your game play but that is not applicable to everyone. I'm sure some poeple don't even use forums to discuss their games. Perhaps they just play the game without discussing it. It's not like part of an MMO's rules and regulations is to post their opinions on forums. I have a hard time believing that most people do it. In fact, the group in my circle don't use forums what so ever. If they want help with a game, they will use the community in a game itself. And playing devil's advocate there are indeed plenty of people who do use forums. But as for the mass majority, no way. Looks at the number of people posting and the number of gamers out there. It doesnt add up.
So, all in all, there are people who use forums to complain about a game as well as discuss what is good about a game. But the majority of people like to play games just to play them, and not to discuss them. Heck, when it comes to MMO's most people don't have the time to type in a forum, unless they don't like it, and would rather be playing it.
Sorry but why are customers supposed to be okay with a game being poorly optimized for PC? Some companies can do ports fine, so I don't think we should just give away free passes to a pretty much well established company. This forgiving attitude will only promote more crappy ports in the future.

It's not a 'port'. Why are you calling it one? I don't think you understand what the word even means.

I am the writer one of the above comments haha. But I want to say this, at the moment you are experiencing what is called the "Oh so shiny" syndrome, it often occurs when you get a brand new mmo/game with very nice graphics and what seems to be appealing gameplay. This has already worn off for me, but still I think the game is magnificent, and I too hope you feel the same about it as I do in a couple of weeks. Also my LS is on Besaid and we will be accepting applications in a couple of days, look into it, names Luna Veneris. It would behoove you to join us, they have helped me enormously and are probably one of the reasons I love the game SO much; again though, just ONE of the reasons.

YES!!!!! DO NOT CHARGE ME FOR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT WORKING! FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU SE.
Thanks for the positive output on the game to start the discussion. Taking the time to write any type of review is time consuming, and you did write a lot about it. Just wished you would have talked more about the games enemies, bosses, and reasons for paying monthly for a game that has to go above and beyond. Times are bad, and a ton of people are broke right now. I'm going to go with the Gamespot review though man... A mean, come on. The guy looked like he was having a hard time fighting a rat in it!
My opinion. Square Enix needs to go back to their old formula and make games more simple. I'm sure almost no one would have a problem with a game just like FF7 when it comes to enemies, bosses, music, ATB system, etc. If it ain't broke don't fix it! They make their games strange now, and thats getting me to look for a new RPG company.
Can a company please just make a RPG with Goblins, Dragons, Wolfs, etc, and not have it feel like Lord of The Rings like Dragon Age did???
If you ask my opinion I'd have to wait for my turn!
It's weird, after reading all the negativity about the game on these forums for the past week or so ... I'm actually tempted to buy the game. Most of the negativity seems to come from illiterate children, and honestly the fewer of them in game the better.
The one negative that worries me is the full screen alt-tab issue, and the other being whether I'll be able to configure my N52TE to operate as smoothly as a gamepad.
Is there an official benchmark tool that will determine how well the game will run on my PC? (i7 920, 6GB ram, SDD, Win7 64bit, GTX 285)

I didn't know yuppy pricks played video games...
I always thought the anoymity of online games helped bring out the prick in most people. Hell, I was playing Darkfall last night and was making jokes I would normally never say outloud.

Blame the other guy, he said that the game was intended for a PS3 therefore the controls are better fit for a controller rather than mouse+keyboard. So yes it is kind of like a port in that regard, which can be quite sad considering there's no "main" version.

Look, I'm a long time player of mmorpgs. I have a college degree and a couple of jobs in the intellectual field.
The game is pretty, your system will handle it on medium settings just fine. I used gamejoy's PS3 controller hack to make the experience a whole lot smoother. Also alt-tab breaks the game pretty thoroughly, but playing it windowed with a second monitor helps.
It's not a complete game. That's where the frustration comes from; there's this great husk where a really good MMO should be. But it's empty, and rather than simply feel empty there's a whole lot of odd obstacles in your way to keep you from realizing there's nothing there.
There's 1 story line quest that you gain access to every 10 levels or so. It's interesting, if not confusing. The team mechanics recently got fixed where xp rewards were more generous, but still there doesn't seem to be a point. The economy is horrid, and I mean trading at the tunnel in EQ1 was more efficient. The server stability is probably the worst I've seen from a MMO release post 2004. So on and what not.
Give it 6 months, or at least until their predicted 40th day patch comes around for them to remedy these glaring problems. Or you'll come out of the experience with a very bitter taste in your mouth.
I like seeing the optimism that some people have for what this game could be, but as a consumer I don't have the guts to keep giving these guys money for a beta game.
Im sorry to say this but that is always such a BS reply !

Biggest load off crock i ever heard.First off ,you pulled that number right out of your ass..
most ppl use forums. These days most ppl are simply used to them because they are a big part of the internet there is no way around it.You try to make it seem as if forums are some kind of niche phenomana (yeah maybe 15 years ago) these days forums are a inherent part of the net.in games you also often get reffered to the forums because typing 300 words in ingame chat to explain some things just does not work especially if it is directly accsesible info ON THE FORUMS.
Also if ppl have tech problems where do they go ? do they simply make a ticked and choose to wait 2 ,3 or more days for a response or do they turn to ...the forums for more direct feedback or solutions that are already there ? LOL @ "less then 25 percent use forums" ,"forums are the vocal minority"
Ok, so I heard that FFXIV came out about a week ago, and I spent the next few days reading up reviews on the game and forum posts on mmorpg.com and the majority of them said, "stay away from this game."
I took these reviews and forum posts with some skepticism for a few reasons:
1. The players who hate the game are going to complain on forums about how bad it is. But the players who like the game, are going to be busy playing it, and may not take the time to post their opinions. So the forum post quantity will be skewed in favor of the haters, not the lovers.
2. No interface could ever be as bad as Darkfalls. And I had a blast during the 6 months or so I played Darkfall. Its a Square Enix game, I can't imagine their interface would be so bad from a company with such a successful franchise.
3. I got FFXI for christmas from my parents when it came out. I installed it, played it for 5 minutes, hated it, and put it on the shelf. Years later I came to find from my guildmates in several different MMORPGs that they looked back on FFXI with fondness and thought it was a great game with good pve and grouping etc. I never gave FFXI a chance and I feel like I missed out because of that.
4. There is NO way this game is worse than the game I'm currently playing. A week ago I was finishing up my 7th week or so of playing a game called T4C (The fourth coming). I had played this game in the past about 7-8 years ago, and I went back to playing it for nostalgia reasons mainly. It was fun for a while, but I kept thinking about FFXIV at work and I thought, there is no way FFXIV can suck as much as this 8 year old T4C game im playing.
So those were my reasons for givnig FFXIV a chance. I went out and bought it yesterday after work. And I must say, the game is not as bad as people are making it out to be.
Heres the big thing people need to know before they buy this and review it. THE GAME WAS MADE, FOR PS3. This is a solid fact. The interface is clearly made for a controller with 2 joysticks, a directional pad etc etc. Hell, the default keyboard layout has ASWD for movement, and IJKL for camera movement, its to simulate the 2 joysticks. You can easily play this game without your mouse and just your keyboard. This game was not a PC game that is being adapted to fit to PS3. It is a PS3 game that was adapted to fit onto PC.
Most of what you need to know is in the instructions manual, and the starting tutorial guide thing. Yes there is a starting tutorial, but you have to actually go past the beginning cut scene areas to get to it. People talked about "there are red circles I cannot cross beyond, and I keep hitting them and im so confused, I played EQ1 so Im not dumb." I was expecting it to be very difficult when I started because of these posts. It was not that difficult. It actually reminded me alot of FFIX / FFX type gameplay. Your in an area, you need to talk to an npc, theres 5-10 npcs or so, you find the one you need to talk to and you talk to him. Thats how most FF games were/are and thats how these starting areas are.
ZOMG I HAD TO TALK TO 5 NPC'S TO FIGURE OUT WHERE TO GO. Hello welcome to single player RPGs, where there are npcs that talk for no reason.... its called Lore, it enriches the game. Honestly, I was inconvenienced for about 60 seconds before figuring what to do to get past the starting cutscene areas.
The character creation section is a bit confusing I will admit, regardless of which beginning character "look" you choose, you can edit them to end up creating the same looking character. They are really just starting default looks as a template to begin from. This portion of the step by step menu could be eliminated. I am pretty anal when it comes to how my character looks and will spend a good 30-120 minutes perfecting the look. I think this character creation system is adequate enough to give u decently different looks, but its nothing like Aion or any games like that, you pretty much just adjust all facial features, height, skin color, and voice. There is no editing of body parts / proportions etc. One thing that I missed out on in the beginning but later found was, in character creation you can use J and L to rotate the camera around your face to see how nose/hair/jaw looks from the sides.
And lastly, the graphics. I read someone say the graphics engine sucks and is not optimized. This is another thing Im anal about. I spent a good 4-6 hours tweaking my graphics settings and overclocking my new GPU to optimize it for the game. The game has extremely high res textures, for every single object. There is no candle or boulder or anything you will walk up to where a low res texture was stretched out over a rock or something and it ended up looking blurry if you check it out point blank. The game's graphics IMO are like all the best features of Age of Conan, and all the best features of LOTR wrapped into one. The grass, bushes, and trees are all very high polygon count models and have very good textures, even if you get up point blank to the bushes they will not look bad. I just bought a GTX460 768 mb yesterday to replace my 9800 GT 1GB and I can easily put all texture graphic options on max without an FPS loss. The sky and greenery all look very good. In order to adjust the graphic settings you need to go to the FFXIV config file in the games directory.
Ok so, to wrap this post up, I want to give one of my final reasons for why I am not unhappy I bought the game. Because it is a final fantasy game, and there are many asian players who will stick with it for years, and because the servers are international, this game will never lose enough players to where it will be shut down or lose development team size. This is a good thing for the future of an MMO. Many MMO's coming out now have so much competition that if it fails hard enough, there is a risk of it getting shut down completely (ex. Tabula Rasa). I do not have this fear with FFXIV, which is a very good thing.
P.S. for people who may question my experience or whatever, here is a list of my MMORPG's ive played (for last 13 years):
Nexus:TK, UO, EQ1, T4C, DAoC, EVE, SWG, EQ2, WOW, Guild Wars, Slayers (Taewool), ROSE online,Vanguard, Scions of Fate, LOTROnline, CABAL online, Age of Conan, Requiem: Bloodmare, Warhammer Online, Nostale, City of Heroes/Villians, Champions Onine, Fallen Earth, Aion, Global Agenda, Darkfall, Earth&Beyond, Entropia Universe
There are some other free games I've downloaded and tried but I played them too little time to count them.
Oh and I rolled my char on the Besaid (unofficial RP) server on FFXIV, and I haven't run into the "crippling lag" every spoke of.
hope this helps anyone who might of been on the fence about buying it or not
Please come back to this in a week. At least 5+ days of playing the game. Those reviews were not finished after a day of playing the game. You said you bought it after work...so you played a few hours? How can you expect anyone to take this seriously?
Even if you get pass first few levels ignoring all the serious problems. FFXIV shows its really ugly head past lvl 20 (no not your physical level). Once you start repairing gears and weapon every 2 hours.. you know its just the beginning.
Explain how your "review" is more informed than any critics. Or any other forum posters opinion, for that matter...?
Claiming it was built for the PS3 is irrelevant. It released for the PC, and for the PC, the interface is crap. I don't care if they designed it to run on the Atari 2600, if they put out a version for PC, the interface should feel good on the PC. If they can't do it, they shouldn't make a PC version. That "The Force Unleashed" works great on a WII, for example, means squat to me, when I'm playing the PC version.
I came to this thread hoping a professional review had been found that had a different viewpoint about the interface (DF had people who understood and at least accepted it) but instead I found more just more opinions.
I personally think this game suffers from the same issues as EVE does, and it doesn't appeal to the average gamer, but is fun for the target niche. Still going to hold off giving it a try though until they get some more patches under their belt.

Sorry but i disagree. I consider myself to be the target niche; I have even played EVE for 5 years religiously, but problems with FFXIV are beyond just interface. There is nothing difficult or complex about FFXIV. if that is how you are going to enter FFXIV you will be sorely disappointed. Game is very easy and everything has been done before and in lot better ways. Time consuming and tedious activities doesn't make a game challenging..it just makes it tedious.

^That
I come from Eve too and that really is a game you need to wrap your brain around but not becasue of the horrible design around a very simple game like FFXIV.

Whether you like the game or not, at least recognize that SE is pulling stunts to increase revenues and hold their feet to the fire to try to get them to behavior better in the future.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Shadus
I have a question for any of you in the post... which one of you is past level 25? game is good an promising

"Whether you like the game or not, at least recognize that SE is pulling stunts to increase revenues and hold their feet to the fire to try to get them to behavior better in the future.
Don't think SE is a good company, tell them that they need to become a good company...and hold them accountable for what they do."
Edit: found it, downloading now.

LOL @ "less then 25 percent use forums" ,"forums are the vocal minority"
riiight
