    5. Devs ramp up production and information abounds

    6. Cries of  "WoW KILLER!" are uttered worldwide

    7. Open Beta

GW2, SW:TOR, Rift, TERA, TSW, WoD... will be a very interesting 2011-2012, one heck of a time for MMO gamers.

Honestly? Everyone of those games you mentioned showed problems before launch. Or in the case of Aion, it was just "same ol', same ol'" -> nothing new in it except for the flying. You gotta keep your ear to the ground. Then again, I haven't been following Rift at all.

And you assume Rift will break the mold of all MMOs and not have problems at launch?  Because that seems to be the point you are trying to get across.

    These threads make me laugh...

NO MMO IS GOING TO KILL WOW....you should all write this on a chalk board 100 times ala bart simpson to imbed it in your brains..

the only thing that will kill WoW is TIME...especially with a mega expansion coming out around the corner the game's pop will only swell more...get over it already people...

GW2 will not kill WoW...  SWTOR will not kill WoW....  Rift will not kill WoW.... TERA will not kill WoW.... War40k will not kill WoW..

let it go already, this subject is tired.

The only MMO to have any significant impact on WOW is going to be WOW 2, should it even happen.

Oh great, just what the MMO games community has been clamouring for...  Actually, no.  I want a game that has depth and consistency, and I don't care how "pretty" it is, which is why I've preferred to play Minecraft and not the current 5 MMOs on my hard drive.

The pre patch (a trivial 6.5 Gigabyte)  was already launched yesterday and as of now ready to play.

After the initial frustration of finding the new buttons on the keyboard one can see how easy it is for Blizzard to adapt.

Prediction for the following 3 years: the competition will never be able to even come close.

Sad for most on mmorpg.com, but I don't care, I play it, the rest of you guys may dream about paper hype.

Uhm, why not? Because competition to WoW would something completly new? The gaming market is all about competition. If you wouldn't want competition, you wouldn't have that job in the first place.

so Blizzard retreated quickly and change the face of WoW completely and they just hit the 12 million sub mark.

Because they say "oh, a wow killer is coming up, let's just change WoW and deal with it that way"?. You do know that it does take longer than 5 minutes to program these changes?

I read a lot of the post on WoW community and a lot of them I mean a lot, hate this change and a huge some are quitting!

Ok, first: the people represented on the discussion boards don't represent the users as a whole. Most WoW players will never ever visit the boards, and as such the opinion of "the majority" won't be found there. Second: if people are happy, they play the game. If people are unhappy, they visit the boards and complain. So let's say 100 people play a game, and 25 dislike it. Of those 25 people, 20 go to the boards and say "game is crap". Most people are happy playing the game, so 10 of the happy people go to the boards and sa it's great. Result: on the boards, twice as many people say the game is crap. People shout "it's doomed" and "nearly noone likes it", while this is obviously not the case.

Same with WoW. People complain a lot on the boards. Always. Especially after patches. And many people shout "I'm gonna leave this game for good! This time I mean it!" like a 6-year old threatening to run away from home. Most don't anyway, and most are happy to stay at home, or come back quickly anyway.

As for RIFT/Dev-team if you are reading this, be ready for a MASSIVE number of players mostly from WoW, I prey that the severs can handle the flooding on release day. If the severs crash do not panic.

Hyped up MMORPGs? That's something new. I don't trust any MMORPG to be running well unless it has been two months already online and did it's job fairly. Hyping games in advance? Old mistakes are old. I learned my lesson with AOC promising D10 on the game boxes and stuff, and it hasn't been delivered a year later. Don't believe anything any company says about a product you can't play yourself. Or like Blizzard did with SC2: basically the same as SC1, they hyped it in heaven, praising every little thing you have seen a thousand times before as if they'd have just found the holy grail of gaming.

And no, I'm no Blizzard fanboy. I just can't stand it when people hype games for no reason. "The next game released will be the WoW killer! Everyone will play it and each other MMORPG will die! (of course I never played the game but I saw the trailer so it must be true!)". Sheesh...

WoW customization is OUI am figuring WoW did not want any competition  with the up coming RIFT: Planes of Telera so Blizzard retreated quickly and change the face of WoW completely and they just hit the 12 million sub mark. I am going to stay around for about one month and see how this unfold.

Of all of these games, which one truly stands out for being different and not some half baked rehash mmo we have all played before?

Now we have WoW killing it self and we are discussing which game will take the more subs from it, interesting

Rift has a lot going for it, good bunch of dev's - not the normal bunch by any means, we have some industry heavyweights here.

We have all heard this before, WAR, LOTR and a long list of so many others that someone said would topple WOW. Till that happens .. may the easter bunny and Santa bring you all the Troll candy you want.

If you guys really like rift, you better start knocking on wood.

Every WoW killer in the past has not done it. And ends up being just another run of the mill MMO.

And to think that a game will come out and "kill" wow.. Well its just stupid. WoW will run and be profitable as long as Blizzard wants to keep it around. Even if a game comes out and takes 50% of its subs, that isnt going to kill wow.

And lets just say a game does it. Comes out and steals the majority of WoWs player base. Guess what will happen? People will start talking about games that will kill whatever killed wow. Then bilzzards next mmo will drop and bitch slap everyone! HA!..... =P

  • XthosXthos Member UncommonPosts: 2,740

No games in the next 1-2 years are going to kill WoW.  UO is still around, so is EQ.

I played WoW beta, didn't like it....But I don't need to hate on it, it's not my type of game, a lot of the core principles are ones that have changed and that I hate in most modern MMOs.  I am of the minority.

I am somewhat hyped and cautious of Rift, and GW2...More cautious of GW2, when you promise so much, like WAR tried to do with its hype, its hard to not fail.  Rift seems to be more realistic with their 'hype', and direct.

I am interested in swtor, but I am very skepticle that it will be something I will like.  I like a story, but it has limits, and I think swtor will be too limiting and maybe too much of what I dislike...Can't tell till its out or I know more.

I also may be interested in Earthrise, but it seems that its got problems, so I don't really have much hype for it, its a afterthought.

So nothing is going to kill wow, and I don't care if a game I play and enjoy kills anyone elses game, as long as enough people play it that its fun to play and they keep it open and work on it to keep it with new content and fresh/fun.

Yeah...always makes me laugh. It's almost equal to judging things based on THIS site. I love forums, and yet...in the five years I played WoW, I think I posted on the forums ONCE (maybe twice, at the most...I think one was a tech forum post). Hell, I've posted here more in the past DAY than I posted there in FIVE years, and I'm a long time gamer. I mean...I know the forum over there EXISTS. lol

Most WoW players do NOT frequent the WoW forums, or any other forums. And the MMO gamers that come here to MMORPG.com, are predominantly long time gamers, regardless of their varied ages.  I remember talking about SEVERAL other games with my guild (not a small guild, but a 350 member raid guild) and LITERALLY only one other person knew what the fuck I was talking about.  In guild chat it was like a constant echo of "What's that game...? I've never heard of that." And it didn't seem to matter what game you mentioned, to be honest. No one had heard of ANYTHING. I was....shocked....to say the least.

I mean...how many LONG TIME gamers have not heard of UO, AC, or Myst or Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights or ....need I go on??  These people literally had NO CLUE what I was talking about with this other guy in the guild. Amazing.

    EDIT:

I just went back and read some of the posts in this thread. How it is every conversation about WoW ends up being a "WoW Killer" prophecy thread? I don't get it. Why the big obsession with WoW being "killed?"

Yeah, next year is looking very promising.  GW2 will be my go to game, no question, but two or three of the others you mentioned will give me serious pause, WoD in particular.  In the meantime, all we need is a deck of cards....

I don't think, Rift is going to kill WoW - WoW cannot be killed by other games, no matter how good they are. But Rift is aiming for the quite big playerbase that is bored from WoW and has been driven away by Sony (eq1, q2, swq, vanguard - damn, SOE is so damn stupid, so many cool games, and they f****** up each one of it),

Actually there are more mmo-players not playing a game right now than playing a game! So Rift will not steal many subs from WoW, but that is not even their goal. Unlike SWToR, the next secure fail...

Another thing: Rift has not been marketed yet, and you are already talking that it will kill WoW? There must be something about this game ;-)
