Honestly it used to be easy to blast the mmorpg genre.
Now not so much.
Look at the genre as a whole.
DDO, Lotro and EQ2 went Hybrid f2p and seem to be good, Improvements have been made to AoC, Aion & WAR.
Sandbox players have EvE, Fallen Earth & Darkfall. Even Ryzom is still around and getting updates and we have Perpetuum, WoD & Earthrise coming also.
If your into F2p Games like Atlantica, Allods, Aika and PWI are decent quality.
We have B2p games like GW and GW2 on the way.
Sure we may have some duds like CO, STO and now FFXIV but whos to say those games wont pull a AoC & WAR and get better in two years time?
Honestly its time for me to stfu and just play what I like because the genre isnt as bad anymore.
Comments
it seems like theres choice but so little of the games mentioned have done anything besides try to get the crumbs off WoW, its like going to the supermarket and buying shampoo, and being amazed at such a wide variety when most of it is owned by the same company, with the same ingredients in them.
same shi.. er.. shampoo, different smell
The point is they've all improved.
THe players that are crying for something different honestly don't know what they want.
You get innovation and you shit on it, or make up an excuse why its not very good in other areas.
As an example people wanted a Land based EVE online, so pertetuum releases. Everyone shits on it even though its just as good as Eve was when it first released.
People cried for a 3D UO, Darkfall releases and everyone cries about the FFAPVP and lack of tools even though if they did stick with it the tools would be there sooner or later.
People cried for a Hybrid mmo, fallen earth came out and people shit on that because the hybrid leaned to heavily toward themepark lol.
Face it... you dont know what you want.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I want something fresh and new. Sadly I wont see that in awhile becuse every single (future) player must have a chance to like a modern game and that is creating alot of problems. And I will complain, bitch and complain some more till I will get a something fun to play with,
And no. Fallen earth and Darkfall is not sandbox. Eve Online is sandbox.
Edit: You have a great post/day numbers Rockgod99

In general, there is lot of MMO's to chose from, and more and more are going to f2p now, even tho we all know that they are far from free, but at least they give you chance to try it for free, and play or quite some time before you have to purchase items..
Looking at longer distance, I think that MMO's are going the right direction.

LOL THanks bud.
To be completely honest all i've ever wanted from this genre were some good games to play.
Its a fact that a whole mess of games have gotten better.
What else could I want? Sure we could complain about a entirely new type of gameplay but i would rather enjoy whats here since most of these games have matured and are quite playable.
Hell... Even Vanguard is good. I never thought I would see the day when that happened lol!!!!!!
Playing: Rift, LotRO

your mistaking me for a hater lol, believe me im happy knowing i even own my own computer! i keep things in perspective truly. Any of the games you listed above would have been awesome, but the genre has matured, you can expect people to stay loyal to such ventures when they are half arsed at launch. and it will be like this as gaming becomes more and more mainstream, all the games you listed (as far as i know) are all self published on shoe string budgets, and if people gave them the money or the time, theyd be great for filling those niches, right now, after coming from the polish of world of warcraft etc, people can't stand it.
i saw a post that said something along the lines of "the customers always right, even if they dont know what they want" a couple of days ago.
if a customer tries something and doesnt like it, who are you to tell him/her that they are wrong?
ill keep trying mmos 6 months after they release or if theres a trial, until i find a decent one, until then, ill be pwning noobs in CS :P
I was speaking of the community as a whole not knowing what they want not you.
I havent read enough of your posts to label you a hater bro
I also agree that games shouldn't be shit at launch, but this genre has proven that games do get better overtime so maybe more people should have a little faith and stick em out?
I also understand that coming from WoW into the rest of the genre is a shell shock. I think it took me two years to finally enjoy another themepark after playing WoW. The combat was always a game breaker for me.
With all that said I still think the games have gotten better and if the games have improved and are somewhat enjoyable (for me) i have no reason to complain.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
until large game devs/publishers take other mmo formats like sandbox etc seriously ill keep bitching now and then thats basically all that's left to do here since the dev corner is dead
heh.. I've given up on the hope that a AAA dev will create a sandbox in this genre.
I play Eve, I enjoy Ryzom & Perpetuum and hope that ER turns out Ok. Its enough for me.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
ER is definatly my big hope as well, if they can get a slightly more noob friendly version of EVE with half decent combat I'm all theirs,
You're just burned out on mmorpg.com. Take a break, play something else for awhile.
(And I like your posts, too, by the way.)
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Hey if you suffer from the lack of complaints, I can make you a LONG list you are free to take. The day I get out of reasons to complain is Armageddon. XD
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
In general, IMO, people who cry for change are just idiots.
Change can be good or bad. More often than not its bad. If success were common it would not be remarkable and admirable. If they were smart they would cry for improvements or certain features. But they don't because they are lazy, stupid, or uncreative. Or in some cases lying to themselves and too scared to take a chance on an idea and be wrong.
The only people who cry for change are bored or dissastisfied people who are too intellectually lazy or cowardly to actually come up with something they think might be a good idea. Or people who are complete sheep and just go with a crowd/beleive any propaganda put in front of them.
The flip side of that is that too many people deride and punish people who take a risk on something that seemed like a god idea but did not pan out. Unprofessional execution is one thing. But the fact is attempts at innovation are almost never appreciated whether they fail or succeed.
The whole thing about "different" and "change" its all BS. It is the prattling of children in grown up bodies.
Thanks for the generalization of a huge chunk of players. That is just plain...silly (wanted to use another word, but then again its quite idiotic to be mean to ppl on the webzone).
And you are spot on wrong. I dont want to play the same game (with some cosmetic changes) over and over again and that dosent make me to a prattling bastard.

I have one comment: Nice comp:)
GREAT! now just 1,261,534 to go!
I loved UO.
I liked Darkfall.
Neither are like each other though. The only thing they have in common are FFA PvP, and UO wasn't exactly "FFA PVP".
The communities are very different. Almost everyone who plays Darkfall is a "Red".
Most people who played UO were "Blue" and being "Red" was more dangerous than it is in Darkfall.
I'd argue that Darkfall is in NO WAY a 3D version of UO, even though I like both.
If being a developer means being quiet, mature, well-spoken, and disconnected from the community, then by all means do me a favor and believe I'm not one.
Start crying about the SWG-NGE then, that seems de rigueur even for people who never played the game.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Well AV tried...
You can't expect them to be on the level of Raph Koster and Richard Garriotte in their prime...
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I'm sorry, I'm not arguing that UO was better than Darkfall.
Only that UO and Darkfall have less in common than people claim.
I don't believe UO > Darkfall. Although my OPINION is that UO is 100000x better, but that's because UO was my first MMO from 12 years old to 16 years old, and also several months in my adult years.
I liked Darkfall. I had a lot of fun in it too. The type of fun only UO could ever give me- and even a type of fun UO never had. Unfortunately, I didn't stick around to play because it was highly unbalanced and a bit of a grind-fest. But a great game in its own right, with its own form of greatness. Just not the SAME greatness as UO, because in Darkfall it's as if EVERYONE is a "RED".
Darkfall is more like UO's FFA PvP without the UO.
If being a developer means being quiet, mature, well-spoken, and disconnected from the community, then by all means do me a favor and believe I'm not one.
That's it I say we hijack Bill & Teds god damn phone booth and travel back...
Grab Raph and Richard and make them create a 3D UO...
Just don't forget the bubble gum because that damn antenna breaks...
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Dude, totally!

I look at it from the other side.
I ran out of things to complain about because nobody cares anymore (theres no monies!).
"Hey you know World of Warcraft sucks now - they use to know what they were doing now they're just trying random things that aren't really connected.. sorta like that show the Office... "jump the shark" and all that"
<silence>.. sometimes not even the sound of a cricket chirping
entertainment is now perfectively competitive - people will watch what they want and play what they want there are not a leader of entertainment
if you point out a major flaw in the system you're either met with deadly silence or vomit
ah the wasted time waiting till people will open their ears..
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.
Personally there are no bad MMO'S. There are just a lot that need more time to mature....like a fine red whine or cheese....hmm sounds good actually [gets out the crackers and grapes].
Also saying none have affected WoW is the wrong way of thinking as in the end its not a mmo in the true sence anymore its a game in a genra of its own. So when playing a mmo just ignore it and enjoy.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
