Classic RPGs

I know these titles are quite old, most of which are only available in PS1 or PS2. But which of these do you think is the best?

Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Suikoden

Final Fantasy:

I played 8, 9, 10 and 12. I like the summoning (GF, Esper, whatever it is called) and I also like the graphics. For me, if it's final fantasy, it's all graphics. Although all the others are not so impressive like the plot. Many of the FFs I've played have very basic plots with the good guys travelling and then defeating the bad boss in the end.

Breath of Fire:

I played BoF 1, 3 and 4. This game is pretty decent. The two basic characters are always there and the concept of changing into a dragon is pretty cool. Graphics is ok since it's cartoonish. This is one of the first RPGs I've played and probably one of the reasons why I like this game genre.

Suikoden:

I played Suikoden 1, 2, 4 and 5 (wasn't able to finish 3 because the cd was broken). Graphics is also ok since it's usually the cartoonish style (Except 4 which I didn't like the graphics at all). I like several of its concepts like the unite attack, the runes, and a lot more. These concepts are not only good, but consistent among all the Suikoden series. You will also notice a few interconnection among the 5 games. The plot is also VERY impressive, especially 5. I played and finished it 3 or 4 times and I'm still moved by the story and the twists. Most of all, the 108 stars of destiny (characters which you can use) is pretty impressive and one-of-a-kind. For me, this is the best RPG of all.

So this is my opinion about these three games which I think made quite a name in the RPG genre. How about you? What do you think of them?

Played: Runescape, Adventure Quest
Currently playing: Aika Global, Atlantica Online
Waiting for: Cardmon Hero, Dynasty Warriors Online

Breath of Fire 1 was great. I played BoF2 and was offended by the childishness so I quit.

I played FF9 first among all the final fantasy games (weird huh?) but i liked it despite the characters' SD (super deformed) style. ^^

I've played all the final fantasies, All the breath of fire games (I hated Dragon Quarter) and all of the Suikoden games.

My favorite Final Fantasies were 4, 6, 9 and 12.

I loved how FF12 was about class choice and things were balanced and how if you wanted to, you could beat the game with ever collecting 1 experience point. The low level challenge is to beat the game without cheating at the start level of all the characters. Due to the way this game is setup, there is higher replay value than any of the other FF games.

I loved Breath of Fire except Dragon Quarter and liked Suikoden 1 and 2, but got tired of the rehash of the 108 stars of destiny. Lufia and Phantasy Star were my favorite Japanese RPG series back then.

My problem with "Japanese" Roleplaying games is the censorship and butchering that occurred. I grew up playing Japanese Consoles and a time came where I learned the language and learned how to read and write. Eventually I got involved in Online translation groups and played original versions of Japanese titles. Eventually I saw Japanese games were poorly translated and their own versions kept getting updated and rereleased with new content for their public and their MMORPGs are always 1 - 1.5 years ahead in update vs American/European versions of the same game. Seriously, Japanese support and appreciation for their customers make the Chinese look like saints and angels by comparison.

My best advice is to learn Japanese and play a Japanese RPG in the original language and story to not miss out on anything. Even if the translation were to be perfect in a localized version, the way scenes are edited and content is butchered leaves much to be desired.

I love Suikoden too! That's probably my favorite RPG.

Although I played a few Final Fantasies. Some other RPGs I've played are Thousand Arms, Valkyrie Profile, and a lot more. :p RPG is my favorite game genre.
