Are there any games currently out that have some form of meaningful PVP? I want to fight for a reason, other than just killing another player. I want to defend my home, city, and clan mates. The current crop of games on the market have no true meaning to PVP, there is nothing at stake, people PVP tp get better gear, so they can PVP BETTER, to get more gear. If I want to just jump into a game and kill, I will play MW2 on my XBOX.
I have tried EVE but I cant get into a game where I have no avatar, the whole ship thing just doesnt work for me. I have also tried Darkfall, and to be honest I really liked it at first but I got burnt out trying to grind out stats. I think that game might be alot of fun if I got into an active guild that is constantly defending thier city, but thats easier said than done.
Any other suggestions?

Age of conan to some extent has what you're looking for.
Aika has a meaningful PVP since it has nation vs nation. So you can defend your nation with fellow nation mates against another nation. Those wars also have some use since relics are at stake, and those relics give buff to all people in that nation.
The only downside is that you have to get into higher levels if you want to really enjoy the war and be able to contribute a lot. But if you can do that, then it's a fun and meaningful PVP, just like what you want.
Do any of these games have player made cities that can be attacked?
Player-made cities in AOC can be attacked by mobs and they have a stronghold to fight over. To get to that point it would take about as long as getting stats in Darkfall would . ... and their sieges arent nearly as fun. In fact, you may end up having to grind more in AOC if your class is gimped and have to reroll or to help your clan build up the city. Darkfall's grind is never ending though since people can take your stuff and your stuff loses durability as you use it. Its the price to pay for a full-loot experience.
I think that Dawntide is the next siege warfare game in development but I doubt that it will be nearly as fun as Darkfall.

I miss Shadowbane more and more... I know some Wolfpack folks had reformed and were working on a new project but I haven't heard any updates in years.
Shadowbane had much of what you are looking for, but had lots of technical issues which hampered it's lifespan. Someday someone will "get it right".

Are those things really 'meaningful' in the long run? How many times do you have to repeat these scenarios before they become as meaningless as one-on-one fights?
Oh I think they are much more meaningful. When you build a city it is a combined effort of your clan/guild/friends. It is an accomplishment... and a great time investment that you (and your friends) really want to defend. It's almost like permadeath for a character... except if you lose a city you always have the option of fighting to take it back.
Also, the frequency of such fights is vastly less than those one-one fights... which further makes them speacial and meaningful. Sometimes, with an empire building game mechanic, you can actually see (on a map) as the reach of your clan/guild/alliance grows. It actually gives you an "end game" of trying to take over the world.. which in all likelyhood will never happen.. and if it did it would be boring as hell.. but it's a fun goal to fight for none the less!

Aion has good pvp but its not meaningful and you will get raped if you join this late. No good pvp mmos coming out for a long time like blade & soul and archeage. Just go back to darkfall and be glad it exists.
Play Global Agenda. Find an agency. Play AvA (territory control) or the join AgendaStats tournament that just started
Ignore the haters who complain that it is only 10v10 and not a real MMO.
It is PvP, it takes player-SKILL, it is meaningful, it is fun.
The old Mythic crew needs to make DAOC 2, not the new EA Mythic. The genre demands it, but they missed the boat by going with WAR.

Indeed.

The most meaningful PvP comes in the form of open world PvPvE where one side can prevent the other side from leveling or one guild can kill another guild over a contested raid boss. Artifical objective PvP such a battlegrounds and castle seiges aren't really very meaningful.
War for territory.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I don't see how that's any more "artificial" than a contested raid boss. Taking a keep can be just as epic an encounter as a raid boss... heck it can even HAVE a raid boss...
Taking the keeps can be part of an overall objective (Take this key keep because it guards a pass to dungeon XYZ) or it can BE the objective.. (Fight your way to the keep... breech it's walls.. fight to the throneroom and kill the evil Sorcerer King)
Then there is also the whole.. build your own cities and keeps... and defend them with your life because they produce resources you need and represent 2 months effort by your whole guild

Allods Online is known for their open PvP and Astral ship pvp (flying ships in space combat)
You can kill the enemy enough times to reach a judge rank where you get better items and extra skill.
I heard next patch coming in December expands on astral ship pvp combat where your guild can capture or fight for ownership on islands in the astral space.
If I just want to kill, I will play Modern Warfare, or Battlefield. Building a clan or guild city and then fighting to protect it and your fellow guild mates is much more meaningful, and fun in the long run.
I'm the same way. PvP in most MMOs just feels like I'm in a poorly made FPS. Die, respawn, die, respawn, it gets quite boring really fast unless I actually have something to fight for. I've always preferred games that offer some form of risk vs reward over games that just have a reward without the risk of losing something.
If someone would take the core systems of EVE and put them into a fantasy MMO I'd be in love. WoD is too far out there to know how it's going to play out.

I enjoy both equally.
There's part of me that loves a great large scale war simulation over territory with high risk and theres a part of me that loves faction based pvp. Where i fucking hate the other side with ever fiber of my being. And I would like nothing more than to grab the biggest baddest most famous bastard on my server and crack his skull in two.
You know people play Fps games that have no risk, next to no long term co-op player commitment and do it on the same handful of maps for years. So I get how people could enjoy that type of pvp in the mmorpg genre.
Sometimes you wanna log on and just smack a bitch not wait around for hours on end planning and planning and planning some more when and where your big battle with the next alliance will be.
