Right at the end of the beta test they offered the same deal for $200, but *only* offered it till the final version went live.
And (I'm pretty sure the $200 is correct, please forgive if i have my facts wrong) now they are offering the same thing (with a different pet, more slots and a few other perks) for $100 more?
I used to have a passionate, passionate love of super hero comic book tropes and idioms. This kind of move stabs the "ten year old boy with wide-eyed sense of wonder reading his comic" inside me a little bit.
Thankfully some of the intellectual properties from the '20's and '30's that spawned certain heroes we know and love (examples: Doc Savage, the Green Llama, The Spider, Domino Lady) are old enough now to be public domain, and authors are taking advantage. Check out author C.J. Henderson if you get a chance, "Captain Spectre and the Lightning Legion", or Google "Decoder Ring Theater" on the web to see some of what I'm talking about.
I apologize if it sounds like I'm just griping, but when news of CO started coming out a year or so ago, I got *Really* excited. I thought:
A Super Hero MMO as good or better than Cox based on a pen and paper RPG ive actually *heard* of that *might* actually *not* have a sub fee?
Disillusioned.
A lifetime *sub*? Available while i'm working and have some money?
only available till end of beta. Disillusioned.
Oh, wait. CO is going f2p to compete with Cox and DCU Online!
Wait. the custom power framework isnt available. I can still pay a sub fee...*if i want the entire game*. Well, ok... I still get to play with their Nemesis system, which was kinda cool....once I can get one of *two* heroes I can create to somewhere around level 30 or 40.
Disillusioned.
Hey look! The lifetime sub is back! With a few extra perks, and an additional $100 tacked on!
I'm unemployed again....I can't justify this kind of expense, or even $15/month that I could use to help me find work (gas back and forth to the local job center) much less $300...
Disillusioned.
Print comics are now over $3/monthly issue, because companies have to make money to survive. Fine. Online comics from company websites aren't a bad deal, but at least one I looked into wants the entire year's worth of money up front.
Entertainment products, if done well, can maintain a sense of wonder, feed dreams, and on some level, inspire hope.
Now, I can see past the "fourth wall" more than I ever would have liked, and the "little boy" in me has a tiny little rose made of anger (hate? maybe...) in his heart.
Enough ranting. I apologize. I'm thinking seriously about resigning from this forum permanently so I don't turn into another angry troll.
Crap like this is what makes me look at Cryptic with a serious "eye roll". Far too often they shovel out shit and try to charge industry standard prices for that junk. For quite some time I've tried to reconcile within myself why I get so angered at the things they do when it usually amounts to "making bad games" and have finally come to understand the reasons why.
What Cryptic does in the genre amounts to "charging people for premium tv service while delivering only those four basic channels that come from living in the area".
I guess I can understand that the bills need to be paid regardless of how bad of games they make but at some time Cryptic needs to bite the bullet and simply admit they are in over their heads as opposed to constantly fleecing the few people willing or foolish enough to ptu money into there pockets.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
We at Cryptic Studios and Atari are excited to announce ourChampions Online six-month and lifetime subscription plans. Players who sign up for our long-term subscriptions will receive special perks, including eight additional character slots, special costume sets and guaranteed access to the Star Trek Online closed beta!
"Beyond the deep discount on the subscription rates, we wanted to come up with added incentives and exclusives that, as gamers, we could get excited about," said Jack Emmert, Cryptic Studios' Chief Operating Officer. "With an early commitment to ChampionsOnline, granting guaranteed early access to our next big game, Star Trek Online, seemed like a great way to engage Cryptic’s biggest fans in other projects at the studio.”
Here are the great features our loyal customers will receive.
Wow...just wow.Can Cryptic be any more greedy? They don't care about the community or making a good game, all they want is to milk the cow and then shut down the servers and present their next MMO.
Honestly, if anyone really buys this liftime sub, it's their own fault.
Buying a lifetime sub in any game can get you into trouble unless you are confident of the game and that you will get your money's worth. Champions Online does no qualify .
Seriously people get a grip. The lifetime offer isn't there for you. Its not there for anyone who is unsure or who does not like the game. It was set up for those people who DO like the game and have compained about the lifetime subscription not being made available.
There are no hidden secrets anyone who purchases it will know that the game is going f2p but with limited access to content. This offer is there for those people who have to date been paying their monthly subscriptions and intend to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

do you seriously believe that? It is there to get the last cent from those deluded enough and wealthy enough to pay for a lifetime(don't get me started on that topic) sub for a game that is dying.
Lifetime subs should ensure that there is a server up until I die - or call them something else.

The 'lifetime' in Lifetime subs is referring to the life of the game, not your life.
I bought my lifetime sub before the launch and I don't regret it.
I had a six month sub... to which I played four months. It was a fair deal, and I don't regret it as I did enjoy the game. However, it didn't have enough things to do and I grew tired of it. When you don't log into something you already paid for that's kind of the wriing on the wall.
With that being said, I do look at this offer with some mixed feelings.
(1) I have no idea what the future of this game is. They are switching payment models and didn't have a good launch. To say it's a gamble would be no understatement.
(2) While it does smack of being a total money grab; especially with the price raise, it is likely not more than based on loyal customer requests. Although why jack up the price on your loyal customers is beyond me.
(3) I'd want to hear far more about the F2P and how that's going to work out before I did anything.
I hope it works out of them. There's the basis for a good game in there. They just still have a long way to go to get there.

Oh sure, people said the exact same thing back when the Lifetime Sub was first offered...but this time itll be true!
The only difference here and back at launch is that now it is pretty much clear how the game is. If you don't like the game, it is pretty much irrelevant how much the LTS costs. If you like the game, then it comes down to the predicion about the longevity of the game. I bought mine and it is almost paid(considering discounted rates, at normal ones is already paid off). Personally, I would not buy it now, but many people told me the same a year ago.
Isn't it about time Cryptic is getting reported to the authorities for being a TOTAL CRIMINAL SCAM company!!
I am sorry tho. They just recently announced they are going F2P in the new year (thats about 2 months from now) and now suddenly they pop up an Add for Lifetime subscription that is even 100 wopping dollars more expensive than when they tried selling it back in 2009 !! F2P gold membership is a joke compaired to Turbine's VIP model.
MMORPG.com and other MMO sites should put up a SCAM flag on this company and it's games to beware gamers for getting scammed by this horrible company that just needs to die and close it's doors! And fast! /facepalm !!

I think it'd have to be a worthwhile good (like flour or non-perishiable food items) to be considered a scam. It's perfectly legal to put shit in a box and charge whatever for it.

I think it would be hard proving any "published" game is a scam. If you paid money and the game was never published - maybe. But if you spend money on a published game without researching said game and the game is crap, well then "let the buyer beware" becomes the operating principle and you have yourself to blame. I think that there is someone somewhere who doesn't know that a lot of people consider Champions Online to be a failed game, or some who think it is a good game, if they choose to spend their money on a lifetime sub it is not my problem nor is it my duty to stop them. Wait... They are selling Lifetime Subscriptions for a game that is going F2P in two months... Jesus, Cryptic. Atleast try to not to look like criminals.
Don't see the big deal. It's not the first time Cryptic or any company has made similar offers under similar circumstances. I certainly won't buy it though I might if it were considerably cheaper....but I'm sure someone will. No one is being tortured to pay and you would obviously have to enjoy the game enough to fork over the cash. Business as usual...not just for Cryptic...but for Businesses in general.
lol, like anyones going to buy this with DCUO around the corner lol. Before people buy the lifetime sub offer they need to be assured of few things lol. 1) That it's not going to shutdown in a month or so and 2) Is the FTP vs. worth having a lifetime sub for.
Neither of those factors are known, so I don't see anyone snagging a lifetime this round.
Not getting cryptic cash or w/e every month kind of makes it pointless anyways lol.
