Can MMORPG games make it a little easier to come back

I find that older mmorpg games do not make things easy for newer players to play or older players to return. This is especially the case with older games with 10+ expansion packs. It is every intimidating to want to get involved with a game that has so many expansion packs. They need to make it easier and cheaper. im not going to spend 19.99 12 times to get all the expansions for a game that is 8 years old.

I guess my suggestion is pack together several expansions in 1 purchase for new players so they dont have to pay and download 14 different things.

I wanted to try everquest 1 again. i love the classes it had so much and there were so many classes i still wanted to try. however the whole situation with the mass amounts of expansion packs made it difficult if not impossible to even consider.

so to sum it up if your out there and you own an mmo please start grouping your expansion packs to make it easier for us old timers that would like to return.

Most of them do have package deals now or simply getting the last expansion includes access to all prior content.  EQ used to have this so you may want to look into it.  I doubt they stopped offering the deal.

About the only games anymore that expect you to purchase the expansions separately are WoW (although they do have a battle chest package) and LotR (initial game is "free" but expansions require a separate purchase).

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Why not just spend $20 and buy all the expansions?

Np! That is one of the things I always liked about EQ. They make it pretty darn cheap to get caught up.

Wicked Jelly is right. Every MMORPG I've known does have bundles, and they are priced higher than the expansions (say $20 vs. $45) to make things fair for the veteran players. But still encourage new subscriptions.

But WoW - wtf? I just recently priced out how much it would cost me to return to the game with the coming expansion - I played the original release for 4 months or so - and it came out to $110. $110 - that's absolutely absurd. And I can only conclude that their collective egos are completely out of control, or that for some bizarre reason they don't want new players. Anyway, I'm one person who is certainly not going to participate in that blatant ripoff.

IM surprised more MMOs havnt tackled this issue. NOt only from a money standpoint (buying new expansions) but also from disparities between old and new characters. YOU must work to gain the newer level cap, and redo all PVE or PvP content. Sure some have quicker leveling here or there but there still remains a huge gap between old characters and new. Perhaps rightfully so, but such a large chasm makes returning to any game tough

Not many games have 12 expansions heh.   I know EQ2 has like 5 (?) and a couple of adventure packs.  They're always packaged with the latest expac, so if you buy the latest one, you get everything.

Obviously, if Blizzard was desperate enough they would make it all cheaper, but should they?  You figure it would be in their best interest to just charge $10 for classic & each expansion.   But again, why should they?   They're not Mythic or Sony, begging for customers, hehe.

I'd like mmos to at least offer free weekends, or at least give you an option to play without subbing for a day or 2. There's some mmos i would try again, but I already bought the game and don't want to shell out $15 to see if the game is better.

Many of them do offer that, you just have to keep an eye on your email for some, others you need to check their forums t find out when they offer free return time.

well that didnt last long. i bought that eq expansion and it said when i logged in i had 5 of 14 expansions. so it wasnt even close to all of them. anyway  when i logged in none of my characters was there. im sure its the right account as it said i had no subscription when i tried to log in instead of invalid login. unless being on a trial effects it in some way. because i was on a 10 day trial first which hasnt timed out yet from when i subscribed. im also cvertain it was the right server.

i built up a bard up to level 5. it was ok.  the area was a special area for new characters. so it was not as fun not being in freeport or quenos or any of the other citys i remember. ive already cancelled the account. i dont know what happened to my 60 chanter or 45 monk and 45 bard and numerous other characters i had. so i dont plan to start over from scratch.

it was semi fun but not being in a familiar city ruined the nostalgia of it all.

guess i just let the subscription run out and i will try guild wars 2 when released.
