I recently received a email from PWI that will hopefully clear up the sour feelings from those not selected in the first round of the closed beta process. you ARE guarenteed a spot in closed beta.....just not the spot you wanted:
With the launch of Phase 1 of the Forsaken World closed beta, we have noticed a great deal of confusion regarding beta keys and how they function. We have had a record number of players redeem beta keys for the Forsaken World closed beta.
However, many of these same people have found that they can't log in to play now that Phase 1 has launched. This letter will hopefully clear up the cause for this, and address this issue in way that will satisfy anyone unhappy with the situation.
Redeeming a Forsaken World beta key has one guaranteed effect: it will get you into the closed beta of Forsaken World. However, the closed beta for Forsaken World is broken up into phases. These phases are designed to gradually let people into the game, and is not an all-encompassing section of the beta test.
Future phases will let more and more people in, until every single person with an activated beta key will have access to the game. This is why your beta key is worth having, because by applying it, you are reserving your spot for closed beta testing as it moves forward.
We want to apologize to anyone that felt mislead, or was confused over how the beta process is proceeding. We understand that there are a huge number of players that want to get their hands on Forsaken World. The time will come when anyone with an activated beta key will be able to test out the game for themselves before the launch of open beta.
At this point in time, no additional beta keys will be created. Please feel free to continue contributing feedback and suggestions about anything related to Forsaken World , whether it be the beta process or a game play related issue. We value everyone's opinions, and are thankful for the continued support offered by our community.

Well unless you've been in numerous closed betas before, you'd know that each operates a different way. I've experienced the closed beta phases before with:
Dragoncia
Shin Megami
Asheron's Call 2
They all put me on a list and I waited to be contacted. Even one game: Global Agenda had me on their list and I never was activated until open beta. No biggie for me. It's just everyone else seems to blow this thing out of proportion. Just like how betas USED to be about actually qualifying to test the game and you HAD to test but lately it's turned into a race to figure out the game before the next guy.

This is exactly the problem, so many ppl expect to get into a beta these days that the real reason we have beta's is totally forgotten or ignored.
I used to feel privileged to get into any stage of a beta, OB's back when EQ1 went live where rare, getting into the earliest stages of a beta was reserved for those who had the technical know how to actually post a detailed bug report and to actually test the game and not just play and find the exploits to use when the game went live.
I blame the influx of Asian MMO's onto the market, they seem to use beta's as a promotional tool to grab as many potential customers as possible with the promise of a try before you buy.
Bring back the days when it was damn hard to get into any beta stage and perhaps we might see some improvements to the MMO genre, rather than allowing every 10 yr old access to run riot in an Alpha beta.
Most p2p betas I've been in selected based on some criteria, system specs, previous experience, etc.
Most f2p betas I've been in were key based, and if you got a key you were in.
F2p betas have generally been about translation and server load tests, in my experience.
I think handing out keys willie-nillie then only activating a few is a miss-step.
Either way, no one is entitled anything until they pay money.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Exactly. PWE knew exactly what they were doing. PWE's customers didn't. I have done a fair amount of betas and I never had this happen. What they have done is to anger a whole lot of PWE fans. I could have gone to Massively and gotten to play. As a long term customer of Perfect World, I didn't. In the long run, it will be a bad PWE decision.
This is the first apology (sort of) from PWE. I was not confused and neither were the rest of their customers. tI was a planned roll out that purposefully favored new potential customers over existing customers. I agree with those who say that we are not entitled to play in the CB. One thing we are entitled to do is to take our business to mmorpgs that value their customers.
I've been a beta tester for games like EVE Online, WOW, Fallen Earth, Jump Gate Evolution, Allods, Perfect World, Shaiya and quite a few more less important titles. The problem FW CBT is that PWE deliberatly mislead the entire CBT participants by omiting to specify the phases of CBT in which they are accepted. They did it to stirr the waters and get some free publicity. Good or bad, publicity is... publicity. They might have lost a few testers but they gained quite a hype... Or they just have a moron in charge of CBT management.
As a proof to why we all thought we'll be accepted from day 1 of CBT, here's the emails received from PWE. I'll let you be the judge.

I think it's a very bad trend (if trend it is) and should be denounced, kinda what some deceived beta testers did on this forum. It was a bad publicity stunt from them.
This letter to me is a perfect example of when the consumer sherks on our own responsibilities, I think it's a shame that a company should have to do damage control in situations like these, I for the life of me can't see why if a person was looking at a beta for what it is intended for they would get angered at not getting picked or allowed in at whatever point in time pre release.
I could see getting a key and inquiring why you couldn't get in but to pick apart the process and try to find nefarious dealings in the process is foolish at the least. So what if you don't get your early look at the game.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I'm looking forward to forsaken world, but I would be lying if I said I didn't feel betrayed by PWI and it's developers following this fiasco. Within the apology, they state that they care about the opinions of their users. So following what you did the people who didn't get in feel mislead and the people who did get in have stated that content that you can complete in three days is not enough for a one month beta phase.
What are you going to do about it?
I wasn't really surprised by this happening since this is a common occurence in all their games that have had phases in beta. The main thing is, they have failed to shirk the responsibility of handling their beta process with an early reminder that it's either gonna be selective or first come, first served. When PWI went into CB, they released a massive amount of keys to build up hype, market the game to potential customers, but only let in a handful at a time until stress-test phase begin in which people were let in for a couple of days and then booted back out again.
They knew Forsaken World is a highly anticipated F2P game in turn-out similiar to PWI, thus they began the notion of hyping the game and making promises that everyone will eventually get to sample it. Personally, I think I'll wait till OB/Release after PW starts nerfing all the classes and goes through class balancing checks. I feel that the developers beta phases have always been lackluster in the feedback department and your words meant absolutely nothing. Their beta is a joke in it's entirety and only serves to test server capacity, latency, and threshold, translation errors, and how to monopolize the game with CS. Good luck to all who are in CB and this will be a diversion game until GW2 comes out.
i was really looking forward to FS
i got a key from here, mmorpg.com entered it to my account and got the beta email and with out checking forums i downloaded the client and installed to find i could not log in.
the way they have done this stinks and ive now deleted the client and i wont be going back and playing any of there games again, its a loss to them as i would have wasted a fair bit of cash in the shop.

Looks like a pretty standard closed beta process to me.
Remember it's a PWI game.........are they not all pretty much the same......so will you miss much not getting in first phase....no....and will you miss much not getting into the second phase......no......will you get to play the game eventually with no character wipe....yes......sooooo......be patient otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a letdown if this game isn't what you hyped it up to be....we have all been there before I'm sure.
I will not play pwe games any more.
Oh good lord people
You're whining because you got a beta key for FW Beta and you didn't get in Phase 1?
OH BOOHOO!! Woe is me
I HATE PWI NOW THEY ARE TEH SUCKETH!!
Look you fools it's a 3 phase CB test
Phase 1 was a selection process like any other test they chose who They wanted to play it and bug report on it
Phase 2 will be a broader selection as they stated a while back MOST if Not everyone will be brought in on Phase 2
Phase 3 Anyone with an Active Beta key will be invited in to test the game
Phase 2 is on the 24th so sit down shut up and stop being ungrateful whiney babies
There is NO Fraud there is NO Conspiracy it's how they chose to do it so chill out and wait your turn.
PWI forsaken world had a Design a Dungeon contest on their forums and denied a winner james2010a from collecting his phase 1 CBT winnings cause his son was using his pc while he was at work and chatted on their forums.
so they banned winner from the forums and from playing or entering the game.
crabclaw forums mob defrauded contest winner !!!
That's not fraud either, However that IS Unlawful to deny a winner of a contest their prize
No it isn't read any competitions T&C's and the competition provider will have a clause in there that can deny you of any or all of the winning's.
I work on a MMO and have done the same thing in one extreme case where a user who ended up winning a RL prize had been banned for exploiting and account sharing.
Obviously for the most part it is not in the interest of the company to withold winnings due to the bad press it would create however if that company chose to do so you will find that they legally can within their T&C's.
ya well my lawyer says other wise and I have a good case to sue them in court !
and which it is being processed as of now.
I bet the kids will love to play this game.
Lol. I'm betting you wear a helmet, ride the short bus and your hobbies include window licking.
