The NDA is still in effect (i assume for not much longer though), so there is still a gap in the information available. However, there are those who are spreading mis-information about how the game plays, what is in, and various other things. I recommend that if you are interested in the game, go to the offical site and check out the videos and such to get a high-level view of what is going on with the game.

Also there are various fan-sites that are frequented by the DCUO devs and they often complie official information from around the web and put it in one, nice and neat package. One of the best is DCUO Source. DCUO Unlimited is starting to shape up as well. On these sites you can find links to the recent DC University gathering that SOE put on for various community members.

Some of the non-NDA breaking items that can be found in the official reveals are:

1.PC and PS3 players will not play on the same servers.

2. The game world is open with instanced "dungeons" for boss-type encounters.

3. There will be end-game raids available at launch.

4. The game is designed to get you to max level quickly because that is where the devs want you to be playing. I don't personally agree with this, but that is how they designed it.

5. There is no crafting because it doesn't fit the universe. They aren't shoe-horning MMO tropes just because it is expected.

6. They are planning monthly content updates to justify the montly cost.

7. The game is an action-oriented game with combos and blocks ect.

8. There are 6 power types with 2 trees in each

9. There is organized PvP as well as open PvP servers.

edit: 10. You choose one of 6 mentors to be your guide through the majority of the game. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Lex, Joker and Circe.

Basically, what I'm recommending is that you don't take any one person's opinon (including mine) about the game without referencing the official information. There is literally a ton of information available including authorized gameplay videos from the IGN charity playthrough. I realize that the official information is just stuff the devs and marketing guys want you to know at the time, but still, the information is solid.

My opinion (for what little it is worth) is that this game will have no middle ground. You'll love it, or you'll despise it.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Excellent post OP! Gonna head over to those sites tomorrow - thanks.

Completely agree, there is no middle road. Also, it will be inevitable that it be compared to the "other" 2 games in the genre regardless of the fact that DCUO is being marketed as an MMO action game rather than an MMORPG. It will be up to the public as to how they receive it as it is not your typical MMO. There is alot to like but also alot that may not be liked.

Do the research, watch the video's and then decide for yourself. There are alot of gameplay videos on many websites.

Very nice post but I have one thing I feel is wrong here.

when you (and the DEVs) say Crafting doesnt fit the universe. This is a mistake many DC characters make their own traps, weapons, costumes etc. Look at Batman he is the Crafters Crafter. That is all I have to say about that. Great post OP.

Everyone brings up Batman and other characters when they talk about crafting.  It isn't as common but there are more heroes and villains that craft, but crafting in an entire super hero universe isn't common they hardly show most of the crafting that happens so I can see how it doesn't fit their game as far as that goes.  If they focused so much on what Batman was crafting as far as his gadgets you would loose out on the story of him being one of the greatest detectives.  So yes Batman crafts his own gadgets but how often do you see him at the worktable putting together remote controlled batarangs?

Also, Batman (Bruce Wayne) hasn't crafted anything for a very long time. Lucius Fox and Wayne industries makes this stuff on his behalf. Now, if they wanted to add some kind of Crafting tree into the secret Identity side of this game... then I could see it fitting in a little better. Like, I work for Kord Industries, as a day-job, which builds up some kind of engineering skill to be able to create gagets. something like that. But I agree with not shoe-horning crafting in right away intill you can work out the details.

I agree you don't see the heroes (in most cases) the heroes and villians making their weapons and gear. But then you have to ask do games like LoTRo need to have crafting...did you ever see Bilbo make his own armor or did Aragorn make his own sword ? No they didn't but crafting is there even though there are blacksmiths and armorsmiths in the world. Of course ..im bias because I like crafting...and I mean wouldnt you love to be able to make your own custom trap like the Joker does. (Remember the horrible original Batman and Robin movie where Joker makes the trap on the boat and it sent his henchmen into the exploding shark waiting in the ocean..Classic!)

And they never completely took crafting off the table.  They just said it wouldn't be at launch.  They're going to go with the wait and see approach with crafting, and see if they can come up with ones that fit into the comic book lore.  Rather have it not be there then have some crap, broken system because it's a staple concept in MMOs.

Crafting definately fits into a super hero MMO world.  As examples:  Iron man made his own armor. Spiderman made his own webbing and webshooters. Reed Richards is always tinkering on some gizmo (from guns, to equipment, to his hovercar).  Batman has a dodad for every occassion and it's not uncommon to see him working on some device or analyzing some chemical.  Many heroes were scientists before they had powers.  They didn't stop using their brains just because they developed super biceps.

    It fits.

Well, for one,  most of those you listed are from Marvel not DC.  Batman doesn't really create, he's more of a utilizer.  He has this amazing super computer,  an entire company with nearly limitless funds, and a cave with pretty much every doodad he's ever fought against or needed to win a fight.

I mean there are plenty of heroes and villains that create,  but crafting is not the norm for superheroes.  It has its place somewhere,  but you don't see batman or any superhero churning out 30 pairs of gloves so they can reach the next level.  I can see how it would be immersion breaking.
