Is lotro and eq2 my only choices for a decent pve mmo grouping experience?

Well when it comes to PVE.. I find Aion to play like a cross between EQ1 and WOW... There are open world areas that are full of hard group oriented mobs. Alot of the quests revolve around these areas, and trust me you have to have a good group to do them.. They have open world named mobs that drop decent loot, and are sometimes held by placeholders. just like old EQ1.. Then you have the group instances that are alot like WOW instances.

The game upped the XP rate somewhat with the expansion and the last patch upped the drop rate of gear in the game.. (IMHO they upped the drop rate way to high) .. If there is one thing I think they really have messed up on with Aion is adding the dumb skins you will see people occasionally running around with.  While it does have an eastern look to it. There is no denying it has some of the best looking character graphics of any MMO going right now. The attention to detail in the character animations and effects are pretty amazing. From things like seeing ripples of heatwave in the air around you if your standing in areas that are volcanic. To seeing your character actually have frost in the air with your breaths if in cold areas..

Overall its a good game. There is PVP in the game but really the way the game stands now.. thats all high level.

LotRO and EQ2 both recently went F2P....theres a reason why they couldn't make money off subscriptions.

For Lotro it was partly becasue the sold so many life time subscriptions.

And not a lot off abbilities? Try playing a warden maybe that is more your cup of tea

Why are you trying to troll/bait? Why are you lying to that guy when you know (with Atleast Lotro) the game was doing just fine with the sub model? I don't understand people like you and why you enjoy spreading misinformation.

EQ2 is 6 years old.  Level 1-90 content has been redone to be largely soloable in order to make it easy for people to catch up the most current content, which for the most part is group based.   EQ2 has absolutely awesome group content.  But if you want to group, you gotta solo to 90.   I mean, you CAN group to 90, there just aren't a lot of people doing that, except on the EQ2x servers where the people who don't want to buy the current content play.

LoTRO is 3 years old.  Again, most people are at camp or at least at 50.  I am currently working my way through LoTRO and groups for 1-50 stuff are hit and miss.  THere are certain dungeons (like GB at 20-25 and GA at 30-35) that have lots of groups, but since I passed 35, I only grouped a couple of times to finish some group quests.  I do see TONS AND TONS of people forming groups for higher level stuff tho, so I'm excited to be getting closer to 50 and then 60 so i can participate.

The fact is, if you want to play an older themepark game, chances are that the majority of grouping is at endgame.

If you pick up a recent game like the new Final Fantasy, i'm sure you'll see tons of groups, regardless of whether it's solo-friendly or not.  THis is just due to majority of the population being low level together.  (I heard FF is terribad btw).    There a bunch more games coming out next year, so maybe wait for one of those - Rift, Tera, SWTOR, GW2.   Although I assure, if you wait 5 years to play one of those games, you'll also find a lack of groups at low level.

p.s.  If you found the graphics of AoC to be lacking, you should probably give up on the genre altogether.  I no longer play AoC, but it has BY FAR the best graphics in the genre, so they didn't do it for ya, I doubt anything will.

Vanguard is the best PVE game on the market by a mile,it's over flowing with content but has a small player base. If you can handle the small player base and taking a bit longer to get things done then no PVE mmorpg can even come close.

  • cybertruckercybertrucker Member UncommonPosts: 1,117

I will agree with Nightangel on this.. Vanguard is an absolutely amazing group oriented PVE based game. Probably the best one going right now.. (not sure how EQ1 compares these days) But it is a decent looking world graphically. I would actually go back to the game myself if I wasnt fearful of SOE dropping the game all together. Which it looks to be on that track.

Right now PVE group wise. I would list in this order.

Vanguard, Aion, LoTRO... Aion does allow for soloing to a large degree as well but grouping is a must.

I would love to know the answer to this as well. It seems to me that there are no rewards for XP grouping anymore, which is the biggest thing killing the genre right now IMO. Grouping should be rewarded, not penalized. If I wanted to play a single player fantasy game, then Oblivion is a lot more fun, and I don’t have to pay a subscription for it. Solo leveling isn’t enjoyable for me. I know it is to some people, but I grew up on MMOs that rewarded groups, and I guess I’m kinda set in my ways. I’d like to find an active game that still does.

I see many people mentioned LotRO. Sure, people group up for certain parts of the epic quests, but that's it. If you're looking for group PvE, you should look elsewhere. There are some great people in LotRO but it's primarily a solo game.

I say we all give Rift a try if your looking for large class variety its right around that area

    Warrior                     Cleric                        Rogue                      Mage

    Champion              Purifier                      Night Blade             Elementalist

    Reaver                   Inquisitor                   Ranger                     Warlock

    Paladin                  Sentinel                     Assassin                 Pyromancer

    Warlord                  Justicar                     Blade Dancer          Stormcaller

    More coming soon too.....................................................................................

I like my variety something fierce so its a  yes for me

and 3 races good and 3 races evil

    Guardians, Defiant

Really reminds me of a WoW...except better :P

Each is a seperate choice not a job upgrade btw

Really gruesome detail at that too pretty scary style and concept artist if you ask me

I imagine he is confusing graphics with art style. Some people just don't enjoy the realistic style of a game like AoC, they prefer a more fantastic (huge weapons, spikey shoulderpads, flying unicorns, etcetera) themed game. Personally I love AoC's style, I just have issue with the grind in Khitai.

I also was told that when Rift Releases it will already have two raids straight off the assembly line maybe even in the beta :D

oh well, in that case, it makes the choice pretty easy:

WoW, WAR, AION - try those 3, see which shoulders are the spikiest.

From reading your posts, it sounds like you like interesting classes, grouping, and art style. So...have you tried City of Heroes?

Class based but hundreds of combos because you pick a primary pool, secondary pool, up to 4 pool sets, and an epic power pool.

    Game is big on grouping.

Art style is comic booky, but you can customize your own looks a lot.

Thank makes no sense at all aoc looked more realistic, and was very bloody it is just not my thing no reason to tell me the fantasy genre is not for me, I cannot stand people like you.

  • AngelboundAngelbound Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,437

I use to play cox but missions get repetitive to fast, everything else is great the customization, archtypes the powers but it is more of a mmo you can play once or twice a week without getting to bored in my experience.

And rift looks interesting been reading about it.

I feel insulted about the spidey shoulders coment, I prefer cloth wearers and medium armor wearers. I really should not throw judgements on people from the internet you barely know, I am not some manchild thing looking for the biggest fluff I just enjoy more fictional settings get over yourself.

If you find a guild that will group with you and let you train in the grouping skillset after having soloed for 89 levels EQ2 Live is certainly an awesome game. There are some doubt if the current new players to 90 actually has any chance of getting into the grouping game as they lack the needed skillset and the older players really are not that interested  in teaching them.

EQ2EX has tons of people grouping at lower levels but the top is still empty.
