the endless grinding of mobs and stupid fetch quests,
the extremely instanced world where you play with 30 people max per map (massive multiplayer my #$@%),
the atrocious crafting system,
the laughable PvP grind,
the still broken end game and sieges,
the unrealized promises that have been made multiple times?
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I have to say that some of the best times in an MMO for me were in Age of Conan.
The heavy use of instancing never really bothered us.
But yeah, I didn't bother crafting in AoC. It wasn't really worth it since the armor drops and quest rewards tended to be better than the crafted stuff.
One of my favorite things about FFXIV is the truly player-driven economy where gathering and crafting are essential.
Oh yes, i had fun at first. But once you are off the polished Tortage the game went downhill fast. I played until arounf 45 ish but then it just became stale and boring as there was no end game and no crafting or harvesting. Economy was non existent. And i grew tired of grinding quest after quests and those quests where really trash. Nothing but kill X of Y for Z drop.
It just did not have a long lasting appeal to me and so many areas, quests and features where broken.

All FFXIV combat leves are the same. Kill 4 of X and kill 4 of Y. How is it any better than AOC's kill X and Y for drops?

Why does this have to be AoC vs. FFXIV vs. Any other game thing. I played AoC... it's a GREAT game. It's a game that if most people tried would love. I played LOTRO, I LOVED IT. It has a ton of content, great writing, interesting classes, and great PvE designed elements. Heck, I loved WOW for the first two years.
I currently PLAY and LOVE FFXIV. I don't need to tear another game down just to prop up my own favorite. I enjoy the depth of the crafting system in FFXIV. I enjoy fishing. I enjoy the combat. What I enjoy most of the game is the limitless potential. FFXIV is currently FFXI's shy little brother that is having a harder time showing what he's capable of.
Everyone compares little brother to big brother, which is an unfair comparison. Give little brother time to grow. Let little brother show you what it can do. The foundation is rock solid for FFXIV. Give us some compelling content and you're set. One thing SE must realize is that the content must be done on our time table. They can't release content at the same time as other games are being released because then it's too late. SE has a 6-8 months window. Show us what you got.
As for the FFXIV comparison to Tera, the first thing that popped into my head was "WoW clone." Don't get me wrong. IT could be incredibly fun to play and I bet it's a going to be a great game for a lot of people. But as for me, it's "been there, done that." FFXIV is truely different (some bad ways), but it's future is even brighter because what it will offer will be SOOOO different than what the market offers right now.
FFXIV needs to fill the void that FFXI filled 8 years ago. Give me a worth successor to FFXI, don't give me another WoW clone. I have way better options in the WoW clone department for FFXIV to fill that niche.

Oh, dammit! You were doing SO well until you started spouting that WoW clone stuff. Then you lost all your credibility. TERA looks nothing like WoW, plays nothing like WoW either. You're right, people shouldn't tear one game down in order to enjoy another (even if ironically that's exactly what you just did) but generally once people start adding 'wow clone' to their argument, everyone else stops listening.

To be honest.. i don't know ANYTHING about Tera. I'm only offering my impressions based on the video that was linked. The UI set up looked very WoWish... The speed of combat was just like wow. The elite encounter was very similar to the PvE encounters in wow. Someone else linked a Raid boss fight, with a rock like boss. The Encounter LOOKED VERY SIMILAR to boss encounters in WoW.
I'm offering my impressions. It looks like WoW. Maybe it has other stuff in the game that is very different, but it doesn't look different.

It costs a lot of money to raise a child. Smart parents don't send a child out into the workforce without the proper training and education.
I wouldn't send a kid with a GED after the same job a young adult has an ivy league education for. Not going to happen.
FFXIV is still working on a GED.
You took my analogy and made it completely nonsensical.
Either wait to see FFXIV grow and reach its potential, or just find another game to play. SE has a great track record of making a good MMO when given the time. FFXI was allowed to grow and become what it was, so should FFXIV. No one is forcing you to stay.
As for someone like me who has faith in SE, based on what they were able to do with FFXI, my faith isn't just wishful thinking. There's actually history and fact behind it. I'm not saying FFXIV will reach its potential, but at least it's being handled by a company that's done it successfully before.
FFXIV and Tera (from the demos/articles I’ve seen) are designed quite differently, so yeah the combat is also going to look and play quite differently. FFXIV targeting, attacks not registering, combat animations stalling, and the pace of combat in general still needs improvement, imo. I don't think FFXIV should feel exactly like every other MMO out there combatwise (it can be refreshing for an MMO to dare to be a little different), but I think it could use more tweaking. That mob was pretty fierce lookin’ in the Tera vid though. At the very least, FFXIV needs EVIL SHEEP. Regular sheep just don’t quite cut it. :
I hate dodos. They annoy me. They stun the crap out of me, then kill me. And they make me want to turn the volume down.
I believe they probably held off on their boss/baddies until they had a grip on how combat plays out in the game. The difference here is that Sqaure likes to make their combat challenging, but players have already claimed things like Barbs is o/p,so Square would look at this and probably design their baddies accordingly.
BTW in FFXI they had giant Sheep several of them, well RAMS.Rampaging was one of them i forget the others, one dropped a Viking Axe.They looked great in a low poly game,MUCH better imo than that fake looking mob in the TERA video,i don't even know what that mob is lol.
As for that TERA mob looking like a treant with metal armour ...LMAO please are you serious?it looked CHEAP,maybe someone should post the picture of a REAL treant looking giant mob from FFXI?Even though FFXI is a MUCH lower poly game, the TREANTS there look a heck of a lot better in detail and realism.
Also i said nothing about aim or anything like that ,when i was comparing the mage video to the mage in the TERA video,i ONLY mentioned about how bad the animation looked on her pew pew staff nukes.I think anyone would be lying if they said those animations look better than the FFXIV ones in the two videos i showed.
Mobs and animations look better in FFXIV.As for the players I can't really say one is better than the other,i havn't really sat down and looked them over to give a fair opinion.
I also noticed someone said TERA had more spells or whatever they said, ummm you think more = better?Example those mage pew pews were anything but inspiring,it looked very cheap and cartoony,a whole lot more of that and i would not be impressed at all. However i have also not taken the time to mull over all the abilities in both games to give an opinion on that, the topic was about the combat video.Picking the SLOWEST possible video you can find on FFXIV is hardly a FAIR comparison, that is why i posted 2 videos that showed better looking combat than the TERA one did.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Your videos are not better than what the OP posted. But I guess it's fun for some people fighting giant crabs and then in higher levels bigger giant crabs. As for this video you posted, the guy is just looking at the mob half of the time. Nothing good here.

These kind of quests are in every single MMO out there, WoW, LOTRO, AOC and FFXIV to name a few. It's just a fact that the haters here constantly going on about it and telling everyone how totally boring and repetitive the leve system is. Funny how that works if you have an agenda. (not talking about you specifically)
So what is so bad about the leve system if it's ok for other games? Oh right, it's bad in FFXIV because some people just love to hate the game. I have seen my fair share of this argument on these forums and it's ridiculous.
Thanks for making my point.

Leve's are bad because they don't have anything to tie them into a living and breathing world around them. They lack the dynamic element. I don't feel like i'm interacting with someone that has a problem and needs my help. I feel like i'm clicking a bunch of pointless shit to get exp. Where are these farmers and their crops i need to save?
The system is in place to make wonderful story telling quests that make you feel involved, but it's being used poorly.

This is how I feel in every game.
At least here I am actively encouraged to do a bunch of pointless shit with other people.
To some (me), that makes the world feel living and breathing. Not just the puppets and their "ho ho adventurer, bring me bat wings!" speech.
I know what you're saying and it would be nice to see the system improved in that aspect. But that's not the only thing GL's have going on.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I am the first to admit that the leve system is not used to it's full potential. In fact, this system is barely ou of it's infancy. The potential is there however and it's genius lies in the fact that there is no need for you to go find NPC-X and then compete with others for spawns as well as the infinite scripting possibilities (shown in some R40 leves).
The people you interact with is the Adventurer's guild. They are the hub that issues the 'quests' and every leve does have a little background story, just like in any other game, the only difference is that they are repeatable. You are pretty much a hired gun for the Aventurer's guild.
Compared to other games quests the 'story' of every leve is just as involving.
What is so different than going from quest hub to quest hub and talking to an NPC that has a few lines how his ass hurts and he needs Garglebeast meat to cure it? It's pretty much the same just that FFXI has consolidated the quest hub to into the city and the story is on the leve.
The fact that they are repeatable is actually a good thing. There are tons of repeatable quests in other games and there has been much of an outcry about including more (not naming any games here).
"Give players systems and tools instead of rails and rules"
Like people do in other games a limited amount of daily quests and than offical wished more of these? And than spend the time mainly in instances or on daily quests instead to do something together with other guild members and just leave them behind for their enxt big goal.
FFXIV is currently FFXI's shy little brother that is having a harder time showing what he's capable of.
Everyone compares little brother to big brother, which is an unfair comparison. Give little brother time to grow.

Than on the other hand to stay with that analogy it would be not nice and a kind of pretty constant deep moral to bully and mobbing that poor child all the time or? Instead of nice people would try to help the poor chance and give it the chance the parents never gave it. Acually the way how we thread our weakest reflects well what kind of human we are.
I had no idea how boring combat and monsters is in FFXIV untill i saw Tera. Wow!
Awesome post, I was thinking on criticize your post, I thought comparing two classes from diferent games made no sense but... I wachted the vids and understood why you made the post. Epic!
That's a terrible example for a FFXIV Lazncer in game, but it's all good since you're comparing both Lancers from the 2 games.
But Here's a good example of how a decent FFXIV Lancer plays like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNGtPaUdsY8 Now what are you guys' thought about this high level Lancer from FFXIV than the Lancer in TERA? Still looks boring compared to the low level lancer from tera. The FFXIV monster barely moves at all, yet the one from Tera is shredding up some landscape moving all over the place forcing the lancer to adjust for his attacks. It is a shame that a dps class looks boring to a damn tank class.

I am pretty sure that you have told us many times in past that FFXIV leve system is better because its DIFFERENT. That's the first excuse i hear from anyone who tries to defend the boring kill X and kill Y leve system. FFXIV is different great, but is different good? only if it works. All they did was replace the generic kill quests with leve system, but objectives are still the same. Kill 4 warf rats, Kill 4 dark wolves..rinse and repeat every 36 hrs.
And no one has any agenda but when FFXIV fans start calling other MMOS quest system trash one has to show them a mirror once in a while.

I guess my wish is that Leve's were used more like a public quest system with scripted events similar to WH/GW2/Rift, instead of dull kill quests that seem to have no impact on anything i do.
If i walked into a camp or region being invaded by hordes of badies or a huge dragon and i had to help out. Stuff like that incourages grouping more and is a hell of a lot more fun than running into someone soloing a rat. An outdoor Besieged or Campaign type thing would be fantastic as the main way to level instead of grinding on mobs.
I guess we're sort of off topic now though. Even if what i just mentioned was implemented, we'd still be at the same place we are now until the actual combat was made more fun. Something like Dungeon Siege 3 minus the need to aoe everything would work for me.
Maybe pointing out hypocricy of those who call other MMOS quest system a trash but can' stop praising FFXIV for its leve system is considered an agenda on these boards

I wouldn't send a kid with a GED after the same job a young adult has an ivy league education for. Not going to happen.
FFXIV is still working on a GED.

It is not better, i did not say it is, i did not even mention FFXIV you just assume and put words in my mouth.
Like? I'm interested to hear.
Like people do in other games a limited amount of daily quests and than offical wished more of these? And than spend the time mainly in instances or on daily quests instead to do something together with other guild members and just leave them behind for their enxt big goal.
Ah sorry revoked some bad memories. :P
But Here's a good example of how a decent FFXIV Lancer plays like:

Now what are you guys' thought about this high level Lancer from FFXIV than the Lancer in TERA?

Still looks boring compared to the low level lancer from tera. The FFXIV monster barely moves at all, yet the one from Tera is shredding up some landscape moving all over the place forcing the lancer to adjust for his attacks. It is a shame that a dps class looks boring to a damn tank class.
BOOYAKA!
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
LOL
Ain't nothing more frightening than a farting and burping dodo. Especially if said bodily functions can kill you.
Maybe pointing out hypocricy of those who call other MMOS quest system a trash but can' stop praising FFXIV for its leve system is considered an agenda on these boards
