I love how everyone is saying arenanet is creating too much hype. They haven't created ANY of the hype. The fans have. I'm not bying the hype either. I have my own hype. I've doen research on the game, I've read almost every blog post on that site, and watch many gameplay/demo videos. They are just releasing information and fans are taking it and hyping it themselves.

The business model isn't just about how we go about the business of getting access to the game world, though. It represents a fundamental vision of how the game should be run, and how players should be reasonably expected to behave. GW, and GW2, doesn't charge a sub fee, so there's no need to keep players on a grind treadmill to lengthen the time they spend just doing everyday tasks. Instant, free (or effectively free) map travel from anywhere to anywhere? What P2P game is going to offer that, when they could just let you waste 15 minutes (or 15 minutes of farming time worth of gold) getting to your destination?

I might still play GW if it were P2P, provided they ramped up the amount of extra free content (and we already got quite a bit in GW1, so that would take a lot), and provided the extra money only went towards extra content and didn't end up changing the game in a negative fashion. I like being able to put GW down for days, even weeks at a time, and not feel like I'm wasting money.

    GW2.

And to be honest, SWTOR's combat looks like crap.

    Really? I thought that's what MMORPG.com was.

Guild Wars2 takes this, no contest. Judging from what you wrote I can't help but conclude you really have no clue about what GW2 would be like. Even if we can argue about which mistakes GW 1 has (as I consider it to be the absolute stand out prodigy game of it's time) saying GW2 is the same is sorry to say nothing short of ignorant. And I mean no offence by that, just shows a lack of information. The GW2 will be RADICALLY different than GW1, so much so that many players wonder if it will even feel remotely similar. Everything has been revamped completely with many drastic changes to the world and other systems.

I for one am expecting it fully. In this particular line-up none of the other titles are even in the same league. It is SO very rare to find a quality game these days and GW2 (if it is anything like GW1) is one of the very very few that will provide just that.

I have been searching high and low for a game that is stable, maintained, BALANCED, with a great storyline, allows for smart play (as opposed to grind fests) and many other factors. So far only GW has delivered that fully. I expect no less from the sequel especially knowing how Anet handles things.

It wasn't until one week ago that I decided I need a new game.  Been playing Runes of Magic and Martial Empires...then thought to myself that these games, including a majority of the genre, is getting bland...look for the ! to get my quest and turn it in at the ?... Awesome...

Then one week ago I decided it was time to see what's coming up, and I now find myself pouring over every forum, website, and social networking site to find more about Guild Wars 2.  Soooo re-downloaded the first, and now I feel like if everything ANet promises the game can do, will finnaly fill that void I have been seeking in a fantasy world.

So +1 to Guild Wars 2 for me...and for making me feel like a fiend suffering withdrawl...

    ^_^

I know no one is going to believe me but the only game i'm even going to TRY from this list is GW2 (and only because of GW's fun pvp). I really am not excited about any of these titles.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

I vote THE SECRET WORLD. The game is the WOW killer. The new thing so to speak. No levels, only skills (to be found in ridles and ancient libriaries).

    [Mod Edit]

Sorry "The Secret World" is a non-contender.

Graphics are like a dumbed down version of CoH

Game design has ben proven NOT to work time and time again

Combat "abilities" seem like a direct ripoff from CoH, CO

It's in no way mainstream. the only way you hear about it is from obscur websites and forums posts like this one.

Most definitely not a "WoW Killer" None of the game listed here can even accomplish that.

2-hour video? :O  Supply me with the link, please?

As someone who quit WoW ages ago, my attitude about MMOs is that I need to play another one like I need another hole in my head.  My friend showed me Rift and I said meh.  I'm not saying it's a WoW clone, but that's where they started from.  Add to that the Rift concept that doesn't seem like it would hold my interest.  Also, as a min/maxer, I'm not excited about their soul system.  All I need is 3 trees devoted to killing someone, actually more like 2.

Then my friend showed me the GW2 manifesto and I was like "holy crap I have to play that game."  The manifesto is awesome, to be sure, but I'm not stopping there.  I've watched every video on gametrailers, I've read every arenanet blog post, and I could easily list a ton of things that GW2 is doing that WoW and Rift aren't.   I don't necessarily agree with all of them, and I do have concerns about the game.  But to me, just the idea that they're devoted to innovation and pushing the MMO genre forward is why they get my vote.

Also, it's Buy to Play, with a vanity cash shop only.  And despite that GW has been out for 5 years with no subscription, they're still banning thousands of accounts for botting.  People should not be dismissing it like it's a F2P game with no support.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true – you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

  • beldetibeldeti Member Posts: 2

GW2 for me as it suits my personal playstyle and budget - no pressure to play because it has no subscription.

Playtime has diminished for me and I'm focusing on work and school and family, so it'll be GW2 I'll be spending my "quality" playtime on :)

Can't wait for Guildwars 2, the first one with expansions were incredible.

Guild Wars II - well, this still has its hype, but its managed and controlled (unlike TOR or TERA). However all I see so far is guild wars 1 with better graphics. None of the mistakes guild wars made are fixed, sadly.

LMAO that was a good laugh right there ... I'm pretty sure you "know" what you're talking about, and I'm also sure you haven't been at any game festivals to play the demo ... And how much time have you spent in GW1? A day? I guess in the end it's your opinion, but you are sooooo wrong on this one m8.

Guild Wars 2 for me, hands down. The Arenanet people have got their crap together and it shows. Their dedication and innovation will take them far I would imagine.

TERA - we get bombarded with supposedly "relevant" news info and posts on how awesome it will be, but so far the only real feature it seems ot have is non-targeting combat. Otherwise its just prettier aion or any other <insertyourgrindgamehere>. Now it would all still be good if it was f2p, but  its p2p game(published by heinious and horrible frogster in europe, so europeans are yet again screwed) and a p2p game with huge multi-million investments and budgets and bills reaching almost a billion dollars.  Now where did i hear already about a hyped p2p game with huge budget and too much hype? Oh right, apb.. II predict a huge disappointment from the community once the game is released. Maybe it will go f2p in few years but it will certainly won't get a huge market share.

Star Wars: The Old Republic  - everything I said about TERA still holds true, except that the combat is utterly weak in this one. I will admit, I had a HUGE hopes when it was anounced that third kotor saga part will be a mmo. However after that all I saw was a hype and disappointing little bits of actual information(from story to gameplay). The hype is dangerous for this one. Of course since its Bioware, it might get overrated and praised like fps effect II, but IMO that won't be the case. The game has nothing innotive nor interesting. The core essence of what made KOTOR great is gone and we have yet another rvr game with focus on pve And the only feature that is fully advertised is voice acting?  The whole info suppresion, the fired employee blog, the lack of actual info and too much hype leads me to believe that people will be either hugely disappointed with this or will try to justify  on why it did not achieve anything significant or why it is undeserving to be a part of kotor awesomeness.

Guild Wars II - well, this still has its hype, but its managed and controlled (unlike TOR or TERA). However all I see so far is guild wars 1 with better graphics. None of the mistakes guild wars made are fixed, sadly.

DC Universe Online - sadly so far it seems that the champions online situation will repeat itself, game will stumble around for a year or so only to go f2p afterward.

Rift - now this has a lot of hype, but the actual info leaks and bits somewhat justify it. The rift dynamics sound interesting and the multiclass system as well. I certainly hope it won't be just another grind to play as it has all the elements of good old school mmorpg in its development, which i like.

Overall, while of this list I will choose Rift, that is certainly NOT my most awaited mmorpg.  It goes somewhat like this:

    1. Secret World

    2. ArcheAge

    3. Faxion

    4. Rift.

Seriously man your post was actually starting to have some decent feedback until I got to the Guild Wars 2 part... Are you Blind or something??? They have changed like EVERYTHING about what was Guild Wars 1. You clearly talk out of your arse and don't do enough research unless it's a game you want to play. So you shouldn't go around posting fallacies on games you apparently know nothing about. Oh yeah, do us all a favor and take a college english course, thanks, buh bye.

I voted for Rift since it could possibly be the best game of this list, star wars is gona be geat game for sure but as said i am not big star wars fan, I love the movies like some of the games, and love bioware's games soo much!  But as said  I believe that Rift is gona be surprize and best of the list.

Didin't vote for guildwars since i have never been much of a fan.

    Kindest regards,

    DKW

Um News Flash, Sony Already Failed at a Star Wars MMO and it Started very well, I know I played it for a few years myself.

GW 2 will trollop anything here and trump the big bad wolf that is WoW.

You better get on board, if you don't your gonna be sorry, I promise you...

It's amazing how with one sentence an entire post can be dismissed as being from someone that has no idea what they're talking about.

The differences between GW and GW2 are dramatic. This isn't Guild Wars v2.0, this is an entirely different game based on the lore. Easily my most-anticipated MMO ever.

I couldn't agree more. If I tried I'd soak my shirt with drool!!  I looks like Arenanet it going to deliever on all its promises and anyone who has played the game at a show is thinking it has great promise....here's hoping !

I was following Tera for a long while but its not looking like it will live up to the promotions...who knows.
