I could make 2 lists personally, one for best MMOs (from the ones I've played anyway) and the ones that I have the fondest memories from. For me, WoW for the best put-together if you will, and SWG would be where I have the best memories. SWG was my first large-scale MMO, so I really think that's why I have the fond memories. The more I think about SWG, the more all of the problems it had comeback; it's funny how sometimes you just remember the good-stuff. For WoW, I remember playing it for the first time and thinking how it had something like 10 things in the game that I had wished SWG had (one being polish, another being quests that provide XP, less grind, etc.). Neither MMO has the best graphics or best first impression, that I'd give to a number of other MMOs I've tried. For me anyway, I had a desire in both SWG and WoW to level-up, which I've struggled with in most other MMOs I've played after the first 10-20 levels. It sounds simple, but I relate it to "gear-envy" at least in part, in both SWG and WoW, you'd see those that had leveled-up and all of the cool gear and toys they had. I really can't say that for many of the other MMOs I've played where it seemed like you'd seen most of the good stuff by the time you got through the first few levels.
1) Everquest - The world, the community, and the depth of the game is still the best. I still play this game.
I played EQ from Kunark until Underfoot. I can safely say the game is currently a steaming pile of unsupported shit that serves no purpose but to milk the consumer base for every penny left.
EVE Online, it offers a much more expansive and free form experience than both the original UO and SWG with more tools, more choice and more polish. It has better pvp system than DAoC ever had and no game could touch it when it comes to player driven economy and to top it all off it's graphics are amazing and after seven plus years it's potential to expand is infinite.
DAoC was my first but EVE is the best MMO I have ever played. Partly because I am just a sucker for sci-fi but also because I could walk of the beaten path and progress without needed assistance of others and without the game turning into a threadmill. (I ran missions and operated out of the Blood Raider stations in the Bleak Lands from late 2003 all on my own).
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
Like any true love, the best is almost invariably the first one you played. Not because it truly was the best, but you were learning the ropes of a new world and almost anything felt possible. I felt that way about City of Heroes (first major foray into MMOs)...but when I went back a couple of years ago, I found it to be a pretty meaningless grind. Still, I have great memories about the people I played with, discovering new zones, and dealing with other players in this amazing (at the time) world.

My vote goes to:
Vanguard, Saga of Heroes
For:
- very large gameworld with an extreme amount of quests
- realistic viewing distances
- large number of classes, each with a substantially different "feel" in their gameplay
- challenging, even if not totally unforgiving
- supports lots of different actions for gameplay, including crafting, harvest and diplomacy
Only thing it lacks is players and developers.
Then you're going to lose.

Collector's editions are scams.
1. Post-CU SWG [Yes.]
2. LotRO [I RP from time to time and this game gave me the best RP in an MMO I have ever experienced. (Landroval ftw!) ]
3. WoW [I think it's a great game but not fanboy status.]
4. FlyFF [Yes, FlyFF haha. I played this game 6 years ago, and met people that I still keep in contact / game with.]
5. EvE [This game made me shed the most tears of all games. (Pod killing and 12 week skill trains ftw!...?) ]
P.S. I didn't actually cry.
P.P.S. Well...maybe a little.
Total MMOs played: 274|Enjoyed: 9. >:|
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Everquest .I played till Vellious so up to there.

In my experience I'd have to put WoW because I had left video games when EQ came out.
However, in my knowledge of the genre and the history of MMORPG's I'd have to put EQ at the top as well.
I vote for WOW.....
wait for it........

Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies
Asheron's Call - Darktide.
Still the best PvP an MMO has offered to date.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
