So if I could not endure the everlasting mining sessions on EVE, does that mean I will not enjoy this? It seems really interesting otherwise...

Yes, PO is VERY similar to EVE. Because its the same typ fo game - Sandbox. Mining is a boring thing I agree. But people usually play sandbox games on 2-3 different accounts simultaneously. If you can't allow yourself two accounts for 9$ each and can only afford 1 account - then do the reading first. There are numerous guides already available. Go to perpetuum website, read the tutorials to get a basic idea of what game mechanics are presented in PO.

Then go to forums and read guides in there. After doing that you will have better understanding what the game is about and either it is for you or not. I didn't read too much and just went ahead and tried it one weekend and I don't regret I have. I pretty much wasted a lot of time in EVE by playing it solo, doing some missions here and there and never really was a member of the corp. PO similar to EVE is supposed to be played as a member of a good corporation.

Usually people before they start sandbox game they think - "I am gonna be a pirate and will rob poor traders", or "I am gonna produce ships and gain big money", or even "I am gonna be the best combat pilot in game". Then after they start playing they work on making that idea to come true. The easiest route is a pirate or a combat pilot of course. Pirates usually get in their ships then go to PvP islands and get their arses kicked. Then they realize that in order to survive you need to have friends at your side - so they join a corp and plunder together with other corpmates.

If you think of a more complicated goals - like becoming a mech builder - you start a game and just train your character to be very efficient in that specialty. There is already planner available to plan your Extension Point spendings based on what your goal is. but you won't be able to log in and just be a hero. That game didn't come out yet - its SWTOR that comes out Spring 2011 which I want to play two. Games like PO require months to actually reach your goal. And being a corp member will help to make that path as less boring as possible due to events, live people that you talk with, funny stuff you do together and a feeling of protection if you're in trouble.

PvE part in PO is just to get you started, to allow you to make some money on assignments so you can put yourself on both legs and start walking towards your goal.

Thanks, reanor. You pretty much got straight to the point which I appreciate :> I can already feel that sense of accomplishment you get when you get from 0 to 1, which is what drives most of us to our goals. Especially in a game like this that feeling must be huge.

I think I will give this game a shot although that would mean I have to live this month feeding myself with noodles every day, hah. Well, not like that 9 bucks would have made a difference. Oh god I gotta stop my reckless money spending habit...

This is the best signature ever. Well, it is really up to you to decide. :x

2- Play a 2nd account to get the most out of industrial and combat, making 1 account only puts you at large disadvantage compare to anyone who plays on 2.

And even if you don't care about staying competitive and just want to have "fun", you should know that you'll just have to keep grinding the same missions a dozain time before having something new to do. Sure you can do other missions but you'll end up having to redo all the same if you wish to do harder/new ones.

No matter if you like this or not, or think I'm trolling, those are my 2 cents.

I have seen this post verbatim in one or two other threads...possibly more. It's literally copied and pasted.

    * You lose EP for every character you delete.

    * "Staying Competitive" doesn't really make sense, since you're working in a corporation. If you want to go it solo this advice would make sense but you're missing pretty much the whole point of the game if you do this.

    * Beyond the tutorial/training missions, missions are unnecessary. Join a corp and find out what they need - combat or industrial. Then start doing it.

or don't join a corp and play the game the way you want to

so far, this game is great for this solo industrialist - once they get to the point where the devs feel the need to FORCE their players to group and PVP (like EVEs devs) i'm out - but i will have enjoyed the ride

most corps serve one purpose - to make the guy(s) running the corp rich and powerful gamewise

of course players coming from hand holding games like WOW will join a corp because they can't or won't learn how to play on their own

Except for the bit about forced PvP you are totally correct. There is one resource on the beta islands that isn't available in the alpha islands. Whatever that resource is, you could buy it from the market and then use it. You could do whatever it is you can do with that resource without actually engaging in any PvP on the beta islands and without joining a corporation. It would be very challenging which I expect is why some people would do it or are doing it.

I generally recommend a corporation for a purpose. The missions you can pick up are not very engaging in terms of story, so being in a corporation gives you a context for killing those annoying little drone bots or mining a bunch of stuff beyond just selling it.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
