How is revamping quest zones innovative? All mmos do that. The only difference is Blizzard revamped all the original zones and waited to release them in one expansion instead of overtime like other games.
It is not what they did , it is how they did it. Go ahead name any MMO which destroyed and rebuild its own world at this scale? i will be waiting......
EverQuest
EverQuest 2
Dark Age of Camelot
Ultima Online
and above all the others, more than WoW by far
Asheron's Call
Playing Everquest 2 for almost 4 years now. Never was the world shattered and rebuilt. Same goes for Everquest, DAOC and UO. I am not just talking about a simple revamp of quests here.
EQ2 WAS the Shattering. UO has been torn apart many times through various updates. Entire cities fall into ruin, mobs invade different areas, places stop being safe. DAoC had entire realms invaded by NPC monsters AND has had its old zones revamped TWICE, for FREE. So, sorry.
Getting too desperate aren't ya? EQ2 was a completely new game. Cataclysm is not a new game its an expansion. that way you would consider GW2 shattering of GW? really?
UO was never torn apart at the scale of WOW, A lot of places get invaded in WAR too on daily basis but its not a revamp. I am talking about a complete and permanent change to the world. So i am sorry too that you have to make up your own stuff now.

There's nothing INNOVATIVE about remaking quests.
INNOVATION is more along the lines of, new techs, things never done in games before. ALl the other games on the list have more of this than WoW does. WoW has never innovated. It's a crime Darkfall isn't on this list. The Mob AI, massive scale battles, and treasure hunting/dungeon mechanics brought in this expansion ARE truly innovative.
Innovation is not just limited to tech, its about doing something new or introducing a new idea. Yes quests have been revamped before many times but you still failed to mention one MMO which permanently changed its world in order to revamp quests. That is new and that is why WOW is on list. Not the changes where only quests are revamped and landscape and surroundings remain same or even if there is a change its temporary.
I actually remember on quite a few zone in EQ1 where cities where destroyed and taken over/changed by a group of enemy factions or mobs that wanted them dead and gone. Physically the cities looked different and i was killed because I wasnt aware that the city had been taken over! Not bashing Blizz, they have done a great job revamping old content. However I wouldnt go so far as to say its most innovative thing thats come out over the past year.
Vindictus really isnt an MMO imo, however its nice to see these physics developments in multiplayer games every once in a while.
I would have to say bringing the genre to handhelds would be the most innovative thing i've seen just for the fact that there alot you can work off of that as alot of developers are trying to incorporate these handhelds into more and more AAA mmos.
I'd have to say Eve, which seems to be consistently gaining new mechanics and expanding on the game's level of detail and complexity.
All of the other games just don't do anything noteworthy... and I'm really not sure why WoW is even on the list as it's never done anything innovative that hasn't already been done before by someone else.
That list is terrible and despite how much I disliked vindictus.. I had to vote for that game, because it seems to be the only innovative game on that list.. I almost wanted to vote for WoW because that list was so bad.
I voted Eve even though I'm not a fan of the game. Anytime a 7 year old game can add something that has many people talking and gets renewed interest in their game, then that's pretty darn innovative.
I just don't think WoW is that innovative. They are not the first to "recreate a "zone" or area, so I just don't find it that innovative.
And yet no one would name these MMOS which shattered their own world and rebuild it in order to revamp the quests and storyline. Atleast one name?
That is because, as others have already said, most MMOs have done that over time instead of leaving it completely static for so long. Quest revamps, world mob tier/spawn changes and even blowing up entire cities/regions and rebuilding them has been done for a decade now. Most MMOs gradually evolve over time - new cities, new NPCs, changing quest lines, xp/leveling balance, etc.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
A revamp of the game world for a specific game is not "innovation" ... please quit trying to call it innovative lol. Mechanics and things like that can be innovative but saying... "Well, they changed the whole game man after like 5 years of it being one way... kind of like SWG did. Thats innovative!" is asinine. Changing things in its self is not innovative lol. Jeez. Change is a given, everything changes, it's a constant that has been around since the beginning of time.
If they introduced some new mechanic or something then speak up, but this constant babbling about the act of revamping the game being an innovation in itself just needs to stop lol.
I wonder how many of you WoW haters have even played the game since the Shattering hit the servers. Come back after you've experienced...lets say level 1-20 Undead - namely Silverpine, and tell me that what you experienced isn't innovative. I've NEVER seen a revamp like that. EVER.
I just think you haters like to hate because its the big guy on campus and because it's "cool" to hate WoW or something. The game is FUN. That's all I need. Does it have the depth I crave that only FFXI ever gave me? No. But I still appreciate the game for being fun and sucking me in.
Anyway, my second choice would have been Eve, even though I find Eve lacking in the FUN department, but I looked at what it has done THIS year and didn't really see any innovation. If walking on stations had been patched this year I think this would be a different story.
I couldn't have said it better. ( nope, never played WOW) .
For inovative I wish there was a none of the above because I would have liked to choosen GW2. There are things like the new 'quest' system that have never been tried before.
This is hard. Honestly, if we were to judge overall innovation, I would choose EvE. It's one of the best sandbox MMOs out at the moment and is so completely different from all other MMOs.
But, looking at the innovations of 2010, I voted for Pocket Legends. Bringing MMOs to a portable platform is pretty innovative and will probably evolve in the future.
This is the first game that has ever been able to pull me away from my subscription game for a significant portion of time! I enjoy the fast-paced action, and the GuildWars-esque payment model has made it an awesome value for my money!
Its obvious that WoW is going to win because everyone who visits this site has played it. I bet most people here have played to max level in WoW, barely played the eve trial, and maybe heard/read about the other 3.
Neither WoW nor Eve changed any game-play mechanics in the last year so, why are they on the list?
If anything, Vindicus sounds the most innovative, but I haven't played it. I vote Global Agenda because theyre using some of the worst features of a lot of different genres in one game.
I'm really tempted to vote pocket legends just because none of these are really innovative (GA and Vindictus are not even proper MMOs) and overall these are pretty terrible choices.
how much did blizzard pay you to include wow in this section as they NEVER had any innvoation ever in that game. As usual they just steal ideas from other people
Top 3 MMO's PRE-CU SWG GW1 GW2
Worst 2 wow and Lotro Under standing stones it went woke
Blizzard doesn't just "steal ideas" from other companies. They take ideas and features in other games and implement in their own flavor. They revolutionize features already implemented, which has been the case with every game they have made pretty much.
However, revamping an entire world into a whole new game, leveling experience and lore advancement is really unprecedented. It isn't just a recoloring, they changed the zones and changed the instances so the game flowed better.
For the ppl who think WoW does something new and innovative with Cataclysm. How can ppl forget the NGE. The article didnt say that the 'innovation' was supposed to be succesfull. If there was any company that completely changed their MMO's, it was SOE. NGE totally trumps Cataclysm in terms of change.
I agree with others that there should be a 'none of the above' option in this poll. I wouldve voted Pocket Legends if I thought it is a MMO.
I had to vote Vindictus. The Gameplay is actually new. Although I think they releasd it too early trying to be the first actionMMO, thus cutting out alot of what makes an MMO, I do look farward to how the game will be in a year or two.
why not the other ones.
1. revamps aren't new, WoW just decided to do em all at one time.
2. MMOFPS. Planetside did it first, and 6 years ago.
3. Character customization isn't new. And it evolves every time an atleast AA game comes out. and roughly with the bell curve of GfX card advancement.
4. It's already hard enough driving with pants on head idiots driving like their drunk from texting or talking on their cell phone while driving, now I gotta contend with idiots playing MMOs while driving too? /facepalm.
Even though at it's core it's just a mix of Diablo series with all out combo combat action games, like God of War. But it's atleast more innovative then anything else on this list to me and is the first MMO of it's kind, I think. I mean, I like Vindictus allot, but even still.
I think it just shows how few and far between creative MMO game designers have gotten and how even more of them are too scared to really challenge Blizzard. Hopefully Guild Wars 2 will be out by next year's end and give something really worth voting on. At the very least we'll have SW: TOR.
LOL @ anyone who picks EVE or WoW. Keywords here are "innovative" and "2010" folks. 5+ year old games shouldn't even be on this list.
So, pretty much in your mind NO game will get the reward.
Anyway, EvE Online should get it. New Character Creation anyone? And while it was suppose to be in the game already, and it's on the test server from time to time. The detail in that is amazing, easily equal to if not GREATER then Crysis. I mean read the devblog about it. Texture resolutions of 4096x2048 uncompressed.
And Cataclysm for WoW is nothing new, NGE you idiots.
1. For the first time in history an MMORPG was rebuilding its core landscape and beginners player experience throughout all these launching lands and quests.
Up until now any MMORPG just added some new continent and was spreading its already thin populations, hence made it less playable due to players lacking. Innovative.
2. The Dungeon finder makes it possible that all "trillion" dungeons already in the game can be played within a reasonable time limit. No longer are there "dead" dungeons in an MMORPG. The downside of PUG's was overshadowed by the simple fact content is played with much more variety in choices. Also dungeons were mostly redone for this expansion too. The new guild leveling is not innovative but counters the "PUG" cross server mechanic.
3. Cata uses world changing events throughout all leveling experiences. That simply means the design of some zones have multiple realities and need to be designed in multiple forms. It is the start of "classic MMORPG meets Oblivion" in world changing effects for the player. The fact it is mostly being used in the leveling experience means it has little to no negative impact on the end (grouping) game nor the dungeonand Raid or Realm PvP grouping (Tol Barad - which does change every time of ownerschip).
It is clear that Blizzard was more innovative than all of the other candidates. Because these techniques above will hopefully be used by new MMO's. Although the costly techniques behind it exclude any Indy developpers.

None of the above, obviously.
IZI MODO?! Ha-ha-ha!
I keep seeing this so I must chime in again oO...

Voted Global Agenda!

who put the No in innovation this year.

Agree. Can't vote the one I would vote for not listed.

Another vote for EVE here.
I'm going Eve although I'm more inclined to None of the Above as well.
3 reasons to vote WOW Cata:
1. For the first time in history an MMORPG was rebuilding its core landscape and beginners player experience throughout all these launching lands and quests.
Up until now any MMORPG just added some new continent and was spreading its already thin populations, hence made it less playable due to players lacking. Innovative.
