Where's the Pepsi?

Coke was a huge hit and had no competition for years.

Coke also benefited from economies of scale.  Joe Blo just couldn't mix up a new drink in his garage because he faced barriers to entry into the market.

Then one day Pepsi arrived on store shelves.  It was a hit for a lot of reasons.  Mostly because of a fresh advertising campaign and the fact that people where bored with coke.

What we have in the MMO industry today is just coke, no pepsi.

Yes, in a blindfolded taste test, like 70% of people can't tell coke from pepsi .

And there is 7up, mountain dew, etc.  But these other brands took time to gain market share.  And to this day, their market share is tiny compared to coke and pepsis'.

Or are softdrinks a bad analogy?

The bad analogy is that Pepsi had been around not much later than coke. It just wasn't until the 60's when Pepsi surpassed coke in sales.

Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.

Not really. The bad statement might be that there's "just Coke". But we do have alternatives such as EVE, UO, Darkfall. Still, only EVE among them is really very big.

Coke took off because of an advertising campaign that is historic in scope.

Before this advertising campaign, Santa Clause was rarely pitctured in a red suit. He was primarily depicted wearing a green or black suit. Coke chose to show him in a red suit because that's Coke's colors, red and white. Furthermore, they used art by Haddon Sundblom, one of the premier advertising artists of his time or any other time. Notice the Norman Rockwell style. The campaign was released for Christmas sometime in the 1930's, and was a huge hit. It not only propelled Coka Cola into the giant it became, but forevermore cast Santa in a red suit.

Well, Coke Cola is still the most popular cola drink on the market world wide, the reason Pepsi is a force in the drinks market these days is because of its massive range of other drink products.

So, how did Pepsi beat Coke? They entered all the drink markets that Coke wasn't in and built up a dominance with different types of drinks. Sure you can still get Pepsi Cola, but it is by no means their biggest product anymore.

Now taking this to the MMO scene... its like Blizzard just having WoW, always going to be the top subscription, mass market, MMO. So the other companies have to aim for different markets with their MMOs, like aiming at the sandbox fans, the PvP fans, the sci-fi fans, the dungeon crawling fans, the free to play fans, the buy to play fans, etc.

But none of them will ever eclipse WoW, just like none of Pepsi's drinks eclipse Coke's Cola.

    I think it's just fine.

Although Pepsi can't compete with Coke on carbonated cola drinks, PepsiCo owns famous brands such as 7UP, Mountain Dew, Lipton Ice Tea (50% ownership), Tropicana (yes, the juice brand), Gatorade (the #1 brand of sports drinks), and too many others to list.

Pepsi's Gatorade still dominates the sports drink market and the Coca Cola company plays catchup with their Powerade.

So in a MMO setting, WoW dominates in cartoon fantasy but not in other categories such as sci-fi. So someday in the future, if/when Blizzard decides to expand to the other categories, it may have to play catchup to whichever company is dominant in that area.

I don't play WoW and I don't drink Coke, I drink Tropicana and Gatorade. image

If you think of it, we do have have Pepsi.

    It is SOE.

They have their Evercola and they have their wide range of alternative drinks. They just do not advertise as much. But given the age of company maybe they know something we do not. Or maybe given their history they know nothing yet think they know everything.

So who is the vitamin water of the MMO world?

  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,273

Well as the CEO of EA is now Riccitiello, a former top honcho at Pepsi and Hagdan Dazz the analogy is apt. We have swapped small gaming companies who loved gaming for big gaming houses run by corporates. There is no room for the small inovative company and our gaming is formularic as a result.

Your more time consuming games/hardcore games are like Coke - in small doses its not that great but over the long haul, they are a lot of fun and really interesting. Your more instant action/less time committment games are like Pepsi - great in small amounts but over time can get rather old.

From my viewpoint the hardcore games would be the Pepsi since they are fun in teh shortrun but grow tiresome after a while.  The more casual games would be the Coke since they might not be as engrossing when you start but they will still taste good in the long run.

Personally I prefer Diet Pepsi over regula Coke and regular Coke over regular Pepsi.

Urgh, ask a few coke or pepsi addicts and they'll tell you the taste difference instantly even when blindfolded.

These people just dont drink enough coke.

Also, in my opinion Pepsi would be WoW.

It rips another product off, and isn't as good as what you got before.

This, its like saying two pieces of the same type of meat will taste the same cooked 2 different ways, they may both be cola but they dont taste the same.

Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
