Guild Wars is not an MMORPG

LaserwolfLaserwolf Member Posts: 2,383

This is what is wrong with MMORPG Players now a days. Ever since the developers started relying more and more potential gamer feedback the MMORPGS have become more and more like Single Player Console games. More linear, less penalty for dying, a choice in pvp, and worst of all: More geared toward those who want 30 minute quickie game sessions.

Extremely little or no travel time. Players always want gigantic worlds but they don't want to HAVE to walk or travel across them. Chat is instant no matter how far apart the players are.

I can not believe that Guild Wars is considered a MMORPG, let alone the top one. I know its "newness" will fade away and it will slowly sink down list of most popular but it doesn't deserve any recognition by the mmorpg fan base or else all the new MMORPGS will be nothing more than tightly controlled and scripted single or multi player "adventures".

The point is who the hell cares whether it's a MMORPG or not. When I play a game, I don't even look at the genre (except a few genres, which I will never play). Just enjoy the game as it is, who cares what it is as long as you're having fun. Guild wars has a few MMORPG elements, that would probably be why it is listed on MMORPG.COM.

if you read alot of the threads from people who played the premiere event you would have known this.  only the fanbois were swearing it was great adn awesome overhyping it.  i im surprised its rated so highly be review sites, imo its ok but just like Diablo has no lasting appeal.  its shallow and for the diablo heads, not really the mmorpg crowd.

The only reason it got hyped so much saying it is better than wow, is because the kids without a cc or a brain troll all over the place saying it was the best game to come out, confusing people looking for real reviews.

It is overhyped. But I still think it's a great game. I was one of the people who thought it would suck and be swarmed by those 1337 10 year olds, but it turns out I was wrong. :/

It's not genius. Even NCSoft doesn't call it an mmorpg. They all it an massive multiplayer online competitive game. mmocg

Well not that I'm comming in two days late and a dollar short on this topic but there is something I feel the urge to get off of my chest. Guild Wars is NOT an MMORPG. Does that mean that people should hate it? No, not really. All it means is that the people over at NCsoft made a verry good MORPG. Just because it's missing an M does not make it an less a good game.

However what I think this does mean is that it's not fair to really compair it to REAL MMORPG's on the market. I mean saying that guild wars is better than EQII is like saying that Unreal Tournement is better and Deus Ex. Sure they're both shooters but really other than the fact that you point and shoot people the games could not be more diffrent.

For those of you keeping to the belief that guild wars is an MMORPG then you obviously have never played a REAL MMORPG before. You won't see 300 people chilling around in one place. You won't see 200 + person raids. You won't see million halfling marches. The first M in "MMORPG" mean Massive and there simply isn't anything massive about guildwars.

In conclusion I would like to just say to the creator of this thread, "What are you a massochist!" I mean serriously what the hell was fun about spending 40 minutes walking to a location. What the crap is enjoyable about not being able to tell your buddies that you just logged on and would would like to get into that raid group. What part of getting ganked puts a twinkle in your eye. Those weren't features in previous MMO's those where a serrious lack of planning. THere is a reason the market has turned away from your pain inspired, jump off the roof of your house, pull your hair out, style of gaming. And that is because, Sir, people friggen hate it!

    I've said my peace
    Mr Vice out ::::28::

PS: I was mudding before there was a The Realm, which was before UO, which was before EQ. So don't even think your hardcore buddy.

    Currently Playing: WOW
    Server: Kar'Gath
Characters: Inis 60 mage and Elwoodblues 30 warrior

These are silly reasons for what classifies a game as a MMORPG.

Aside from the 'more linear' aspect, the rest of it's just crap. So a MMORPG should have a big penalty for death, no choice in PvP (?), and geared for those who can play hours at a time? And there should be travel time -- no portals, no spells, no horses, just walk your ass from one end of the world to the other?

    Sounds like fun! NOT!!

By the way, you don't have to use the map to go from location to location in Guild Wars. You can walk everywhere. Using the map is really optional.

Oh, so we should bury our heads in the sand, and just ignore it?

Don't hate a game because it's successful and it doesn't fit within your own definition of what a MMORPG should be. The game developers don't even refer to it as such. Ah, but because it's getting coverage by MMORPG websites, it's popular, and people who play MMORPGs are also playing it (leaving their old MMORPG games to play Guild Wars), you feel the "traditional" MMORPG industry is threatened?

    Get over it.

So what if Guild Wars appeals to people who play "traditional" MMORPGs. Gaming sites covering MMORPGs I think are doing more of a service to their members by covering it vs. ignoring it. And who knows, Guild Wars could be the type of game that introduces people into online gaming, gets them hooked and looking into playing some of the other "traditional" MMORPGs.

Out of curiousity, does it cheese you off that The Sims Online, Planetside, and WWIIOnline are also listed here?

I think the original posters real point is that Guild wars not being far removed from WoW, seems to be the direction MMos are heading. They seem to be getting easier , maybe even to easy.

Some of us would like an MMo thats a little more complicated, there is nothing wrong with that. If you want ease then thats fine. But, it would be nice to have one made in the other direction. Personally I dont mind walking forever, I dont mind harsh death penalties. I dont mind having to think about what I am doing. But then again I enjoy complicated games to begin with.

And I am not saying I dont like WoW and GWs, they have there place and are fun, but once again MMo makers seem to be forgetting the other side of gaming.

Why do you base the fun you have with a game on what it's title is? Guild wars is an amazing game! wether it be mmorpg or whatever!

there is something massive in guild wars, massive bordom

  • InstagoInstago Member Posts: 109

I don't think anyone wants me to get started on why Guild Wars is not a MMORPG. All I'll say is that even the game developers themselves clearly state Guild Wars is not a MMORPG but is a CORPG.

  • twhinttwhint Member UncommonPosts: 559

This topic is being beat to death and really contributes nothing to anything. I especially like the comment about how one person states they were MUDding for a long time and that makes them an expert. Doesn't really mean anything other than that they have played games for a long time. MMORPG's might be an extension on MUD's, but they are a whole new ball game.

The main difference here is whether or not Guild Wars is massive. That is the whole point of contention and what everyone is arguing about. As other people have stated, IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. It's been included on this site because the site developers felt it should be included. That's all that matters. Everything else is just lips flapping in the wind.

I personally feel that it does meet the requirements of being an MMORPG, but I'm not going to try and convince other people who don't feel that way. It's up to them to decide what they want to believe. Arguing about it is pointless and will not amount to anything.

For history's sake, because I know someone will bristle about my comments, I've been playing MUD's since 1988, when I first had my PC XT 10mhz computer, with a 2400 baud modem and was using BBS's to telnet to MUD's for an hour at a time. I remember one where you didn't have classes or anything. You all started in a room that teleported you to the 'world' where you then had to run around and hope you got a weapon before someone found you first and killed you. That was a blast. But anyway, does that make me special? No, not really. Just means I've been around a long time.

For the sake of discussion, what existing MMORPGs would you classify as being hardcore / complicated? Out of that list, which are you currently playing and if you did play any of them in the past, why have you quit playing?

It really comes down to the market. If the numbers aren't there for the existing MMORPGs (classified as hardcore/complicated), then why would a developer/publisher take the risk on developing another one? Granted other things like lore and storyline have a lot to do with it also.
