I need a good PvP MMO to get into now......

GarinoldGarinold Member Posts: 29

To give you some background, I've been around the MMO genre for a while.  I started with the original EQ, got into DAOC, went to WoW from there, left WoW a week before the release of BC, and went into Warhammer where I stayed for a long time.  Aside from those four, I have experimented with at least a half a dozen or more MMOs via 14 day trials & beta testing.  This past summer I played EVE & decided to my dismay that the game was a little too complex for my blood, hated APB when it came out, and played Mortal Online to find it was too broken and just strange in some ways.

It just doesn't seem like there is anything good out there for a true blooded open world PvPer.  I kinda gave up hope back in September.  However, after this last semester of law school (fall 2L), my thirst for the old school days of open world guerrilla tactics based pvp has reached fever pitch.  I need something.  I want to sneak up on someone and kill them like the good old days.  I had a dream (no kidding) last night that I was back in the original EQ Ruins of Kunark hunting people down.  I need to break back into it.  I've been away from video games in general for so long and I can't stand it.  I want a good pvp game for god's sake and given the fact that a lot can (hopefully) happen in a couple months I want to know what is out there.

I know WoW just came out with Cataclysm, which supposedly changes everything.  How is that?  Does it bring back some of the open world pvp that made it completely awesome back in the days before they ruined that game with Burning Crusade?  Are there any other games out or coming out soon with good pvp?  What are my options, what do you guys suggest, & why?

Thank you

    Check these forums: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/forum/841/LFGame.html

Darkfall has some open-world PvP that is mentioned a lot...

Check GW2 for WvWvW which comes out towards the end of next year for an update on RvR as found in DAOC and WAR. That's what I'm holding out.

I've seen Darkfall being advocated as being the best open world pvp game out there.  Can someone elaborate on the game?  How exactly can the game have the reputation as being the worst in terms of the grind and yet there are no levels just skills?  Is it all about the gear grind?  If it is how do they balance melee aspects with spellcasting?  What is the story with Darkfall?

    thanks

Nah, if your definition of "good PVP" is "zerg 2 win" then WOW isn't gonna satisfy.  Stick with EVE or DF: more grinding and zerging that you can shake a stick at!

There is definitely a big grind in Darkfall and it has an old school feel to it that people around my age are usually looking for since the current MMORPG genre currently has been dumbed down for the casual player. I am actually a pretty casual player and have many real life responsibilities but if I have a few hours to kill, my top choice is definitely Darkfall.

If you are looking for a game to play for a long time, even if as casual, than this one is worth checking out. If you are the type who hits end game and then moves on to the next game or are looking for something to play casually for just a couple months, you may want to look elsewhere like Guildwars or Global Agenda, etc.

There is no cap in Darkfall which usually scares away people who havent played the end game, but it actually makes the end game much funner, and although I was afraid that I would end up being just another clone, it feels pretty far from the truth. I wanted to be a tank when I rolled my character and that is how I play. I use very little magic (just heals and some utility spells) and wear heavy armor and use mostly melee/archery. It seems to be moving more in the direction of gear oriented and prestige classes will be coming out within the next few months.

The cool thing about this game is the freedom, fast-paced combat, biggest open world without instances in the MMORPG market, mounted and naval combat, FFA PVP with full-loot, etc.

There is no other game (and I have tried almost all of them . .. been gaming all of my life) that has given me a rush like Darkfall does. It definitely brings me to the edge of my seat, can startle me so much that I feel like I am about to have a heart attack, and makes me too afraid to get up and go to the bathroom at times without logging out of the game. There is nothing else out there like it. Best mob AI out there so I enjoy the PVE more in this game as well.

There is a PVE event this weekend on the North American server which should be pretty epic that you would see if you got the trial now. Better get the download started now or you might miss out. GM-controlled mobs are massing together and will be attacking some cities this weekend. I can't wait!

I echo the suggestion of Darkfall. Though I am not a big PvP player, as I have discussed in other threads, there is a thrill to the Pvp that exists in Darfall that is difficult to match. I say, at least try it. You will be suprised at how thrilling and rewarding it can be. Not just the PvP but the other elements that make the PvP so intriguing.

Yeah, not enough people actually do world pvp to allow a player zerg in WoW.  It just turns into gear zergs instead.

Darkfall, L2, Gw2, and Tera are your best options. IMO

The comparison of WoW = themepark pve and Darkfall = Open-World PvP, is pretty true. Head on over to the Darkfall site http://www.darkfallonline.com/index.html

...and choose between North American or European sides, and take part in a 14-day trial.  You'll be pleasently surprised, I'm sure.

Its sort of Dated now, but saying you like open world PvP and you have never played Planetside?...theres a Planetside 2 in the works(apparently) releasing spring next year...so time to brush up on those twitch skills.

It probably has the best and most balanced PvP of any MMO and well its the only 1 of 2 MMOFPS games. Anyway, at level 1 you will have access to the exact same weapons armor, vehciles as a level 40 player, downside is...they will have access to alot more stuff at once than you. you have 100HP at level 1 and level 40, same armour absorption and acess to the same armour.

It kinda has a high learn curve, since you have not played any game like it before, but theres really not much to the basics, goto the flashing lights on the map and there is action.

Oh yes did i Mnetion its FPS battles of upto 300 Players?

Only really problem with it now is hackers, but alot of them are bad anyway.

This probably sums it up better than any words:

    SKYeXile
    TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
    Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.

Ok, you guys have me interested.  Tell me though how they balance magic & melee and how itemization factors into it.  In most other games I would lean toward playing a glass cannon.  I can pack a heavy hit quickly, kill my targets, and not need any gear to really do it, thus not having to worry to much about pve or crafting and I would utilize guerrilla tactics and strategies to ensure I almost always found my target first.  I played a runemaster on andred in DAOC & a Mage in WoW on this theory and it was very successful both times.  Move fast, move concealed, strike hard and fast, move out....that was the strategy that brought me many victories and many good memories.  Guilds got pissed off at me and put me on the KOS list, but thanks to proper tactics and strategies, trying to kill me was like trying to nail gellow to a wall or eat soup with a knife...they never would get me.  The catch of course is that I'd get raped by a melee if I ever got caught with my pants down.

Is this same approach effective in Darkfall.  I don't feel like getting into the game, finding out only melee is viable, and all I'm doing is playing grind out catch up in some stupid ass gear grind that never ends and I'll always suck (that is what drove me away from wow and daoc).  Can an all magic, non-gear dependent, glass cannon w/ some healing since there aren't restrictions, be successful in DF?

Both Darkfall and Mortal online are different and have pretty nice open PvP. However are both on good and bad indie games so the polish can at times be less than perfect, particularly for MO since it released a year later. Both are worth a free trial if you want something different and closer to UO.

Besides them I guess you could try out AoC and Aion. AoC actually have pretty nasty free for all PvP but the combat system is a bit different and there  could be more content. Aion  is grindy but pretty and at least worth a free trial as well.

I postponed all my PvP lately in the wait for GW2 and WoDO. GW2 seems to actually be a mix between GW and DaoC PvP wise and that is my 2 favorites there. WoDO is a sandbox game by CCP set in gothic horror, that might turn out fine as well. Tera might also be worth a look, it goes to OB in Asia next month so it isn't that far away.

Darkfall is a very fun game but i hope you either have a ton of time on your hands or you are very patient. The grind to get your stats at a level that will actually allow you to pvp 1v1 will take many many months of PVE grinding yes you will be killing monsters non stop in a pvp game.

dont let them sell you on this " you can be effective in a group within a week " that is all garbage and just  wont happen. Also dont start thinking of you can be magic caster or melee or archery you are gonna have to be all 3 . There are no classes in this game so you must level and max every stat in order to be any good. But if you can some how manage to last your way through the non stop ammount of just grinding on mobs and lack of content in the game, several months later you will find a true pvp game some where in there that is if you find a good guild.

Play the 14 day trial you will see that you will not do any pvp , well you will do pvp but it will prolly be you getting ganked non stop by higher lvls err stats lol. once again do not this of this as a pvp only game this is a massive pve grind to finaly get to play pvp . Also do not start to think oh im gonna be the best mage or rogue ever its not gonna happen because in this game the good pvpers are master of all trades because they have every skill in the game maxed out .

Think of WOW instead of you being a mage you are every class in the game and so is every one else . But you can chose to only level mage if you like but you know you will get stomped on because all the other people leveled mage , rogue , warrior, druid .... etc and they have every skill in the game how much of a disadvantage do you think you will be.

Now that you understand you need to be every class now think of wow again you now have to level every class to max level several times over becomes very boring and dull.

Now that you know if this sounds fun have a great time once you finally get to max level becuase the game is very good game but its gonna take you a long time to get there . Say 3-6 hours a day for at least a few months to even get anywhere and to really start to be good a pvp a while longer. im sure your gonna have a ton of people telling you that im dumb and i dont really know what im saying but hey if you read this and think im wrong go right ahead and spend you money and time on this.

Yes it can be successful so long as you are good at kiting and keeping the fight ranged . ... which would probably end up being a lot of bunny hopping. Even if you put all of your focus into nukes and healing, you will still end up with archery and melee since archery is the only thing that works under water and melee works great against mobs and its not hard to get so there is no reason not to use it sometimes, unless you ignored the melee grind and put everything into magic, which I have seen some really good new players do, but they put jump on all of their spells ASAP (so that people charging in melee will never reach them and get nuked in the process). I would go with a primarily fire build so that you can nuke the enemy and make him go flying up into the air, and while he is in the air do an instant cast ray, and then shoot him up into the air again right when he lands. If melee starts coming for you, best thing to do would be to bunny hop away (super jump and using spells to blast you forward) or run away, jump and turn/shoot while in the air, as he tried to get into range. You can specialize each spell, like put jump on one, + damage on another, +range on another, etc. and the same goes with melee/arhcery (some of their specializations are such a bonus that it blocks you from using magic). If you are going to try out this, I recommend just wearing robes until you can afford bone armor later on, sure you will be like you said (glas cannon) but your nukes will hit harder and casting time will be faster. Play-styles are very gear dependant. Wearing robes makes you much better at magic but makes you a glass canon compared to heavy armor (but you heal yourself better anyways, which is why heavy armor is kind of lame atm, but I still like to wear it anyways). There are new robes coming out soon too, along with the new graphics, directx11, and prestige classes in next expansion.

With my character, for example, my play-style is some kind of melee kiting tank who does lots of bunny hopping + archery but damn my aim has been bad lately : ( and most magic is blocked so that I have higher resistances to it (I don't use nukes anyways because I wear heavy armor usually).

There is no cap and at first, this bothered me a lot because of what it sounded like on paper, but after playing for awhile I really like it. Its fun having so many options race through your head during combat. Prestige classes are supposed to be coming soon with the next expansion though, but player freedom is highly valued in this game, so there will still be jack-of-all-trades I am sure (because its fun).

Guerrilla tactics and that strategy that you talked about definitely work in Darkfall and funner to do when the server is busy for a newer player since you wouldn't be strong enough to raid clan cities yet. Its very fun to be like that (sneaky PK) and put on headphones, use stealth, and find some victims with good loot. If you wanted to do this during your trial than I recommend joining NEW clan or going to war with them, which has a city very close to Human lands so you could find fair PVP pretty easily from using them (or attacking them?). If you get the jump on someone, you have a huge advantage. You could join NEW and become evil and just live out of there city, go out and find harvesters wandering around in Human lands and other noobs to prey on and you should have one hell of a great time (when you win anyways, not so much when you die, but robes are easily replaced).

The above poster is right, although this is a PVP game, the PVP is not always very often and during the trial you are more than likely going to feel like most out in the wild will kill you very fast and since there is no cap, you will probably end up with archery, magic, and melee int he long run because there is no reason not to have it (besides magic, not everyone uses magic, and mages usually only use archery if underwater). This game has a huge grind as well. Offline-skilling just came out and they will be adding more stuff to it to make it more worthwhile, but yeah, it would take a year or more to become top dog but the thing is that you probably will not come across top dogs anyways since you wont be raiding cities. Wandering PKs are usually less than half as powerful as the big boys who usually just stay in their clan city most of the time, so it could be many months before you even saw one of them.

The grind is different than WoW and DAoC in the sense that whatever you choose to do will make you a stronger PVP character, even if its just crafting and harvesting. This is what I love about this game because I hate to grind, the type of grind that forces you to complete it before moving on in the game. I just do whatever I want whenever I log in, and since I have kept my sub up and keep playing the game (10-20 hours a week usually), my character is pretty tought now. There are no level limits in this game so you can still do anything as a new player, like wear or use anything, go anywhere you want to go, group with anyone, etc. If you are trying to create a developed character ASAP, than its probably easier to do in WoW and DAoC, but I have plenty of fun even when playing on a nooby alt account, because I am like you where I like to go out solo and use lots of stealth. It feels a lot more realistic in this game compared to others and its quite the rush that no other game can provide.

Offline skilling sounds like something they have taken from Eve.  Do you feel like it is making a difference for skilling up your character?

Well they just started it so its pretty early to tell but so far I have used it to raise my Witchcraft since the alternative is debuffing mobs which becomes boring very fast so was definitely worth the money imo (I am lazy and don't really grind). I will use it much more when Stats and some Skills are added. So far I have spent around 15k to raise my Witchcraft from 86 to 92 or so. I think it is only a few hundred to raise it from 1 to 25 and a couple thousand more at least to raise it from 25 to 50. When I started playing I had to debuff mobs for about 8 hours total to get my Witchcraft to 75 for a great AOE healing spell and I think it must have cost somewhere between 15-25k from the cost of regs. Its been pretty easy to maintain it as a causal player since it has only cost me 2.5k a night (because I am in the 90s, it would be much less if I were below 50 or something) and its pretty easy for even a casual player to make 5-10k an hour if he or she knows some good farming spots. You could do one daily quest in one of the new dungeons, for example, and that is enough money for a couple days offline meditation at least.

Lol, I understood about none of what you're saying dude.  I am asking about the offline skill system.  Are you trying to say you need to spend money in order to use the offline skill system?  Is it like it is in Eve, where you select a skill or two, set them in some que, and they will move up in level when you're logged off?  How exactly does it work - in layman's "I've never played the game before" terms?

Roll a hero or villain on a DCUO pvp server and you won't be disappointed. They have both open world in metropolis and instanced pvp. It is a ton of fun.

Perpetuum Online is an indie MMORPG for $10/month. Amazing game, absolutely love it. Do the tutorial missions, and don't spend your EP (skill points) until you really understand what each skill does. The game is intense, and the PvP amazing.

    Whoops . .. sorry . ... lol

It does cost gold to buy meditation points (for offline skilling) but they recently stated that it will be revamped  with other methods of payment such as ingame time or perhaps rewards from turning in quests.

Every skill/spell in Darkfall caps at 100. There are dimishing returns with almost everything in the game so getting to 50 is easy enough to do naturally just by using the skill/spell occasionally as you play for a few weeks. Getting to 75 takes a couple more weeks or a few more weeks depending on how much you play and if you are focusing on the skill or just abscent-mindedly using it occasioanlly. Getting to 100 can take a long ass time because it slows down quite a bit.

The mediation cost works in deminishing returns as well so it is much cheaper and more worth it to a new player.

In order to clarify what I had already posted:

Witche's Brew (Aoe heal) is pretty much the only spell (besides conversion spells like mana to stam, health to mana, stam to health, etc.) that everyone in the game wants, no matter what their play-style is or what they are playing for since it is another way to heal youself. You need 75 Witchcraft (school) in order to unlock Witchesbrew (spell). In the past, before offline skilling, the only way to raise a school's level is to cast spells from that school. In Witchcraft, most spells are worthless debuff spells that nobody would ever use during PVP. There came a point during character development for everyone when they realized that they really need the benefits of witchesbrew so they end up debuffing mobs for several hours straight (about 8-10 hours total) in order to get 75 Witchcraft. This is very boring to do but now offline skilling can be used to reach a level in a school without having to cast any spells from that school. One can use up hundreds and thousands of spell components during hours of non-stop casting and the cost used to be around 15-20k to achieve that goal. I am not sure on the current cost to get from 1 to 75 using offline skilling, but I am sure that it is more expensive and not as fast as buying 20k regeants and debuffing mobs for 12 hours or whatever.

So far I have used offline skilling to raise my Witchcraft to 100 to get some debuff that I might use someday. I have spent a total of about 15k to get from 86 skill to 92. This is more expensive and has taken longer than just buying regeants and debuffing mobs myself, but I am a causal player who doesn't have a lot of time, and hate doing anything boring and repetitive (camping the same mob over and over or casting the same spell over and over . .. gets old fast!). To me it was definitely worth spending more money so save myself boring gameplay. All it is asking for is about 2.5k everyday (cost is much higher in the 90s so it would be a lot cheaper if you had noob skills) and even that is very affordable (you make double that from just one daily quest or perhaps quadruple that if you simple cap one village).

i'm totally digging the DCUO beta atm. Best world PvP I've seen in a while, because there is plenty of it, and it doesn't set you back more than 30 seconds to get right back to where you were. Even when you are in the middle of missions you don't get all miffed for getting ganked, because the players jumping you are way more fun to take on. You'll just come back and try to catch them unawares, wipe em up, continue your mission for a bit, then they come back > repeat. It's hella fun.

Lol no, not a troll, a person whose had, most likely, a worse experiance with the game than you. It started off with being unable to install the EU version those many months ago, which led me to installing the US version, which meant I was playing alone for most of the time. Then even that stopped working after a patch, AV supports answer to my problem? Format C.
