It definitely looks like Mesmer..but I thought that I read somewhere that the last four professions weren't going to be something we saw in GW? Oh well, maybe I'm getting myself confused with something else I read. Mesmer is a really cool profession and it would be good to see it again in GW2
From an ArenaNet tweet : “Remaining four professions: at least one is a returning profession, at least one is similar with a different name, and at least one is new.”
Is this the Mesmer in GW? (Not sure, I never really played GW):
If yes, then it isn't hard to see a resemblance and I would say it is the Mesmer that will be revealed next. Although I really can't judge it, I wasn't interested in Guild Wars, but some footage and the listed features for GW2 do make me interested. The Mesmer looks like an interesting class.
Originally posted by illyana i'm wondering if non-GW1 players can understand and appreciate what a Mesmer is cuz it's pretty unique to GW and has no real equivalent in WoW or LOTRO, and has its own niche within the game will people be mesmerized or be perplexed by this prof?
I don't think non-GW1 players will struggle with the idea of the Mesmer class at all. I feel that this class has existed for quite a long time in one form or another. Since stuns and illusions in RPG classes have existed for quite some time, basing a class off of mental manipulations is not new news in the slightest. I remember playing my Healer/Mes in GW1 and I didn't find anything about it to be dramatically unique, albeit still dramatically more fun than I had ever had with that type of class (or those types of skills) previously, for sure.
Vanguard:SoH has the Psionicist, EQII has the Illusionist, LOTRO has the Lore-Master and even WoW has skills spread across classes that do the same types of things . . . it's not a unique concept now-a-days; although I can say that GW1 has a take on the Mesmer class that makes it very fun.I nearly always took at least one Mesmer skill with me on various missions in GW1, especially if I was running Protection-Healer for certain missions (Glint, for example). That said, suffice to say that MMORPG gamers aren't going to struggle much with the appreciation or understanding of this class.
As for whether or not Mesmer is the next class, it sounds plausible, but we'll see. I can't say for sure what I'd release if I was them, but I agree with another post that stated that releasing a unique class would help to keep people interested; then again, I don't think releasing a classic class will hurt their hype in the slightest. I'm not letting myself get overly excited about this game, I'm going to wait and make all my judgements based on post-release experiences.
I can say this for sure, guns really turn me off of a game. If guns are implemented I'll have a hard time forking over the money. I don't want to pull out my sword and hear a gun fire off behind my head (or at it). It reminds me of the part in Indiana Jones where the crowd parts and some random, large, dual-wielding berserker is standing on the other side performing sword tricks to show how amazing he is and how doomed Indiana Jones is just before Indiana pulls out his gun and shoots the guy . . . game over. I don't care if it's a musket, if you can fire a pellet from afar and take out your enemies in one shot, that's what you use. What's that expression? Oh yeah, "Never bring a knife to a gunfight." (here come all of the "it's a fantasy game" and "they have magic, healing and armor" comments, as if it matters).

Well I'm sorry that you won't be playing then.
I think the unique part of the mesmer wasn't the illusions part but the fact that it makes the enemy hurt themselves. I've played an illusionist in eq2, loremaster in lotro, and all of the classes in wow. Not one of them had that special utility of a mesmer. You really have to play one or face one in pvp to really appreciate (or want to throw your computer out the window) the gw1 mesmer.

I doubt you are sorry that I may not end up playing, but cute apology.
I can understand the fanboy-isms related to the GW1 Mesmer, but I played the class by itself as well and never found it to be so strikingly amazing that I had to get it max'd out. Skills that make an enemy hurt themselves are not new, they're not even close to new. Also, no classes are going to 100% match each other between games; something tells me there would be a lawsuit if that were to happen. That said, I have played most every class in all of the games you mentioned (and more) and have found most, if not all, of the GW1 Mesmer skills within them.
I appreciate the way GW1 built that class, and I never said Mesmers didn't have unique properties . . . I merely state that nothing about the class's skills are new and that people will not have a hard time gripping or appreciating the class in-and-of itself. As fun as it was to play a Mesmer and a Healer/Mes in GW1, absolutely no "mental" class has been as amazing to me as the Psionicist class in Vanguard:SoH. If you want to truly feel the power of utility, try raiding the Ancient Port Warehouse with a Psionicist . . . but first I recommend getting a box of tissues before you start.
Note my context and try not to manipulate my intentions. The class was great, had unique properties and was fun, BUT each individual part of the class, skills and all, can be found elsewhere (before and after the game's original release) and have existed for a long time. Though GW1 made great use of the elements that make up their Mesmer class, they will not be difficult for the general MMO masses to quickly become comfortable with utilizing.

A llittle sarcasm I admit. But I do think you shouldn't rule out the game just because it has firearms.

I love sarcasm, don't change. I got what I deserved, you got me.
That said, you're still right, I shouldn't rule out a game for guns alone and perhaps I won't. I'll await more information regarding the implementation of firearms before I make a final judgement. If the rest of the game harks of the days of yore, I should be able to ignore the gunfire; assuming upgrades don't include fully-automatic assault rifles . . .
GW1 the first class I played was the Mesmer, after I had played her and run with groups someone then told me I had picked the hardest class first. She was a blast to play and unique. So I will smack Dev's if they neglect to give us the Mesmer back.
The point of the mesmer class wasn't this or that particular skill. Rather, it was that no matter what you wanted to do, a mesmer could counter it, if he knew what was coming. Most games don't have the Guild Wars concept of a class having a lot of skills, but only a handful of them can go on the skillbar at once, making you choose. Without that, it's impossible to have anything approximate a mesmer in Guild Wars.
The nearest thing to playing a Guild Wars mesmer that comes to mind is playing defense in Tecmo Super Bowl. If you guess your opponent's play right, he'll be lucky to end up with an incomplete pass or a run for no gain. And if you don't, then your defense doesn't seem nearly so intimidating.
The counter class approach could be built into a game with just about any game mechanics, so changing some fundamental game mechanics from GW1 to GW2 doesn't rule out the mesmer's return, or even force the basic concept to be significantly different. But it would be hard to build into any game properly, and hard to balance once you do put it in. That's why I'm not aware of any game besides Guild Wars that has tried something analogous. There have been games that had some situationally useful utility skills, but how many have an entire class with several dozen such skills and nothing else?

Well, they do also have some pretty nasty hexes that is useful in any situation.
But I usually uses mesmers to counter certain problems, they are a great counter class but hard to play.
Gwen sank Kuunavang together with me using a few necrohexes faster than he could say "What?", the fastest mission I ever soloed.
Anyway, a mesmer is difficult for a lot of people to play. Most people like to play direct, a mesmer is sort of an indirect style of play.
It is not so much about like, but more that it plays very differently from all the other classes. The only other class that is different as well is the monk but it is different in the role it play.
But a good mesmer is gold worth. A bad one takes up a valuable slot from a hero or henchie....
Hrm. Wasn't the first reveal Elementalist, then Warrior, then Ranger, then Necromancer? So I'd say either next reveal is the second heavy armor profession (following the order of reveals) or then it's the Mesmer (returning class).
I personally did not like Mesmer (only used it in a few builds as a secondary) but it is such a unique class/profession I would be disappointed if they did not put it in GW 2
mesmer will most like be in guild wars 2, but unless they have everying done arleadying and anet is jsut screwing with us.. would be a bad choice to realese now.. with 3 other proffesions on the burner as well releasing this class could make more work for them in balenceing. either way it will be in. im guessing another adveture type comeing . medium armor anyway but then again i realy dont think an assassin will be put into this game, if only not by the name assassin. if you watched alll the game play footage and read all i have well.. the ranger already has skills that an assassin would normaly have.. and they have a pet. as for the rest of the classes left.. i predit a heavy wearing buff bot of sorts.. I just hope monks will actually be able to do some good damage in this game. Having a monk as a healer is such a foreign concept to me and it really put a sour taste in my mouth when playing GW. One of the many reasons I thought that game was garbage.

I think that Mesmer will be the last official reveal. At this point we all but know it to be in GW2 (at least those of us that read the second novel), but knowing Anet, they like to string people along, keep up the tension--I mean the mesmer is a fan favorite, so keeping that fanbase coming back day after day hoping for the reveal is pretty fast, easy, and cheap marketing.
I think the the guardian, a.k.a. blue mace lady, will be the next reveal (yes, it was named in the second novel if you were paying close attention).
If you are paying really close attention to the books, one may have notice that there are at least 9 distinct 'professions,' so it gives me pause wondering which of those will be the 8 playable when GW2 first releases.
A mesmer in gw2 would be awesome. But i have some problems with it. If and a big IF mesmers are going to be in GW2 they are going to be reworked a lot. I predict that mesmer might even be one of the clasess that are similar to old classes but combined and renamed. Reason for thinking this is: First of all there are NO HEXES in Gw2. Which takes about 90% of the mesmers arsinal. Meaning no way of casting domination magic or illusion. Also there is no real energy managment due to the huge mana pool in gw2 as well as mana potions. Which takes out most of the inspiration tree as well. As highly as i want mesmers to be in gw2 as a mesmer, the way i see it ; its highly unlikely... even though i still dont want to believe it. There is proof for a similar class to a mesmer. With the elegand like armor the purple color and the fact that the chick looks like gwen. Weather or not it will be a mesmer... we'll have to wait and see
Getting rid of hexes is just a game mechanic. They can pretty much give a GW2 mesmer the same abilities as in the original but they will just be classified as a condition. I don't see this inhibiting the development of a mesmer at all.
This is just a speculation article here, even though the title of the article suggests an official announcement of FACT.
I guess that's ONE way to insure that people read your stuff.....masquerade it as something it's actually not.
No offense, OP, but I don't think you should be allowed to title something as FACT when it's not, regardless of what board it's posted on.
I agree.
This happens a lot here.
I'm very excited about the mesmer profession and I'm sure that it will be there. I just don't need someone claiming facts and sending misleading post titles. Very lame and actually pretty insecure.

That's the mesmer indeed. A true work of art indeed. The best way to fight a mesmer is to not fight a mesmer.
