Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: December Monthly Update

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Age of Conan site has a new December Update post complete with information about what the team has been working on this month. The letter begins with a short update about the 2.1 series, moves into a retrospective look back at 2010 and a look ahead at what the team hopes to accomplish in 2011.

If you haven’t been keeping up with these monthly updates let’s refresh the memory on what is coming up in the early part of 2011. This content will come through the course of the 2.1 series over the next few months.

The 2.1 series is designed to provide a little of something for everyone, rather than a huge addition for one play style or preference. We have already added great new PVP and social content. So what exactly do we have coming up in this series?

  • The Dreamworld Technology Integration

  • New rendering updates

  • Performance updates

  • New tools in the back end for the developers (they need new toys now and again too!)

  • Two new max level six player instances set in the city of Pai-Kang

  • New raid encounters in the Jade Citadel as tier four raiding expands

  • One new, max level, solo player ‘daily’ instance in Kara Korum

  • Two new solo ACG (auto content generation) dungeons that will scale for players between levels 40 and 80

Thats a pretty good free update content wise.

The issue that I had with AoC that stopped me from re-subbing is if you are interested in PvP  and don't have a decent internet connection then the game is unplayable. For gamers who live in Australia it is a real issue. Also the graphics require a very high end machine, even with 512Mb graphics card I had to run the graphics at low settings to even break 25fps max... so sad.

Also the lack of non-combat content is exceptionally apparent, weak crafting etc... it just broke my heart that I couldn't even hit people in PvP due to lag, sucks...

I subscribed for a year on the basis that I'd get a bunch of goodies and a TSW beta key. But of course, because I was already paid up for several more months, my transaction didn't go through immediately and I got squat.   The guy I talked to in Customer Service fought tooth and nail to avoid giving me anything till I mentioned that all I really wanted was that beta key - and if he was happy for me not to get hooked on another Funcom game, then perhaps he should look at his priorities.

So... he gave me a key.

    *THIS*

Something for characters you haven't levelled to 80 yet. Am I the only one who gets bored going through the same zones over and over again?

    And thank Crom its solo!

You must have a very crap connection then.

I am in Aus and I do fine in pvP.  Yea I notice the lag and sometimes its pretty apparent on a bad night that my competition is getting ahead of me simply due to lag spikes.  But this is the exception to the rule and not very common.  I normally ping 250ms or so, and thats more than good enough to compete.

Get some Internode or Adam hooked up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. With Funcom the best is just around the corner, the corner however, is miles away. Read again the promises being made here and consider this...

Posted here in May 2010, over 6 months ago...Craig Morrison's list of features Funcom were working on.......

1 - Funcom will also move on some more technical oriented tasks, such as updating the Dreamworld engine (the engine Conan is based on), which should result in improvements to the DX10 client.

    And...

2 - Rounding things out, they will be working on additions in respones to community feedback and dev wish-list items, which include vanity armor, additional bank options, class issues, updates to the GUI, and more.

There was a 'tweak' added to the DX10 engine which Funcom said 'should' improve performance. It didn't for me as it stll takes an 'Age of Zoning.

Vanity armour, there's no sign of it, unless of course Craig is trying to pass off  'social' gear as 'armour' which it is most definately not.

Additional bank options? See GUI updates below...

    Updates to the GUI? Nothing...Zilch...Nada.

Come next July I'll post on the progress promised this month...Or not.
