The game has been ok so far. And this still is early beta. But right now this game does not feel like a 50 million dollar game. Not even 50 million dollar bad game. War and AOC both had huge budgets and you could see where they blew there money. I really do not see it with Rift. This is not a bad thing, just odd.'
I don't see rift developments being that insanely expensive. Its basically like they have 10 or so PQs that randomly spawn. War had more then that number in the first tier.
The quests are not that new revolutionary or of extreme quality. Tons of smaller budget F2P games have similar questing quality wise.
I have not touched dungeons or pvp so it could be there. I am just not seeing where the 50 million went. It is insanely stable and bug free. Which could be it.

bla bla bla bla
have you ever developed an AAA MMO, if not why do you feel qualified to talk on the cost of making one?
I have to say that I don't really see it either. Darkfall actually feels like a bigger game than this.
Did you play the beta for Darkfall? How about the release?
Darkfall was an incredibly horrible role out, possibly the worst of any game I have ever been interested in. The second worst being Mortal Online.
Both were indipendant companies with investors backing them and a good amount of money put into them and they both rolled out the gates with craptastic results. It took a year for Darkfall to get straitened out and even now it's a grind and a half with wacky PvE elements, cheesy sound effects, and crap spell effects just to name a few things wrong with that game. Mortal Online hasn't been out that long and has come a fair distance from when they released but it was a bug filled horribly broken game with a huge lack of content on release.
As far as size goes you have to realize a few things about where this game is attempting to do things right. You go for a smaller more defined world with good PvE and PvP and there will actually be people in the contested locations since it's not a sprawling game world that is so big you can't find anyone. Also you can't compare the limited level 20 experiance in this game with alot of the game off-limits to a game that is already released with the whole world available to run around in.
Thats 50 million in building renovations, and giving themselves a nice big salary because they've all been out of work after the big "downsizing" of every mmo gaming company in 2008.
EA already paid for most of this game by funding Mythic who supplied Rift them with all their art, animations and code.
Zing!
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Are you comparing Rift to AOC/War as they were when released or as they were in beta? I can't comment on the beta as Rift is the only one of those three I have betaed.
Or are you speaking about the content at all? The game itself doesn't really look ground breaking but what they have done they have polished incredebly well. Only game I've played with such fluent gameplay at beta/start has been wow and we all know it had it's share of problems at start too... Beginning with EU day 1 account management being closed after a few hours. Rift has been nice that way... I know some are having issues with low fps and crashes on alt tab. Then again wow... I had issues with alt tabbing for the first year, lost all textures and everything was in shaded with gray and no texturing at all. And that wtf folder... That I believe I had to manually delete for years on patch day, even if I didn't have any addons installed. Yeah, I once installed wow from cd and patched it all the way to current and still had to delete wtf folder.
And the work they've done with their server architecture. I'm too lazy to start googling for it but I've read excellent article about it. They have made their servers load balancing so we won't see that Dalaran effect with hundreds of people causing lag. I know it's partly about loading data on client side that lags but that doesn't change the fact that Rift can handle those amounts of players in small areas.
Is the game any good? I don't know... I haven't made up my mind but I'm sure I will try it. What I'm afraid is that it's just too wowish to be any fun for me. Racing through levels to get to the purple pixel zone. Been there, done that, no longer fun for me.
And please remember we're only seeing a small portion of the game.
Also, you aren't thinking in future content updates either, or the extra money they will need to improve, move or buy new servers if the game does well. Among paying salaries for everyone on the game over a certain period of years(if it does well).
These days, 50 million isn't really that much, not to large business ventures and entertainment media like movies and games which tend to make the initial cost back off of box sales alone.
It's all conjecture really, but I can imagine quite well all the things that require funding. Gotta say, the sound is top notch as is the coding of the game. Don't forget money to market the product too. And the small fact that we have only been shown the first 20 levels of the game. That's like showing me just Tortage in AoC which is only a small portion of the game.
Cept AoC blew hard after tortage, when I was on trial soon as I left tortage i was dumbstuck asking myself "what the hell happened to the good game i was playing?" and promply quit. This could be another aoc where lv 1-20 is like tortage then it goes downhill fast.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
I don't know, the production values are at least comparable to WAR and AoC. I myself thinks it exceeds at least WAR definitely by a good margin, but the story of course being invented rather than borrowed isn't as compelling as either WAR or AoC for existing fans of those. I can tell though there's a lot of dollars trying to shove the lore down my throat though.
All and all I think its beneath WoW in terms of compelling world and story; obviously exceeding WoW by far in areas of visuals and some sound design, but its at least in most ways as good if not a lot better than WAR and AoC. Now, what it has to get right for me what AoC and WAR got wrong is a world as vast and flashed out as WoW's has become. Stuff like PvP and crafting has to work as advertised out the gate, and the end game has to be both PvE AND PvP, not one or the other, or some gimmicky mashup of the two.
The quality of a 50 million dollar game is definitely there, but not so sure about the scale 'til we can jump in and tour the world.
Tortage was the only section of the game worth playing, though.
The fact that I think Darkfall feels like a game with a larger budget doesn't really have anything to do with whether or not I like the game any more or less than Rift. I'm simply saying that Rift feels cheap in comparison to other titles in the genre. Everything from the loading screens, to the character animations, to the graphics, yes the graphics (art design and, in some cases, technical detail) just don't measure up in comparison to recently released games and games currently in development.
Indeed, all these combined gives it that clunky F2P feel. The character models do have bit of a distinctive art style going on which I like. Low-fantasyish in the way especially elves are made to look. Not sure about dwarves looking like garden gnomes though.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
Watch the new intro, made me wonder if they really blew $50million on this thing when they have something so laughably bad as advertising.
The game is polished and fully functional with promised end content for once - looking at you Aion - but everything is just so generic and dull. There's just no story or lore or immersion, like someone took the MacDonalds that is WoW and took away the fries, coke, and burger and just left the Rift bun. As someone said, Rift is made by programmers not artists.
Still, FFXIV apparently spent almost as much and look at the piece of crap that turned out. Maybe MMOs need more money these days to be made, even when you're using an 8 year old engine and recycled graphics...
By the way. I am not trying to sht talk rift here. I might not of ever made a AAA mmo but i have played a lot and keep track of budgets out of interest.
I do not think we will have a final conclusion to how good rifts it till maybe 3 months after release. Right now somethings look promising others don't.
But just to put this is comparison.
Darkfall Budget 15 million
Allod Online 13 Million
WoW estimates of 120 million for launch (you could say that didn't look like a 120 mil either)
AOC estimates of 38-60 million
Warhammer (seen numbers all over the board, but ti think 75-100 million)
apb excess of 50 million
daoc 2.8 million (they had a lot of code and server arch already from older games)
50 million though, This is not a small budget MMO. I think it will be pretty successful (especially cause of polish)
Also a side note. The art in the game is great, but the engine does not do it justice.
That's a matter of opinion BUT you have a point but not the one you are trying to make. You still wouldn't have known how AoC was until after you left tortage and saw the rest of the game. Same with Rift, it could suck or it could be awesome, we won't know until we get to explore post 20 content.
You are brushing off the most important factor. Tons of that money went into their architecture and backbone. THIS is why I am excited about the game. You describe it as "insanely stable and bug free". This is a game that is still months from launch. THIS is what we should be expecting from all of our games. There is a cost factor involved. TRION has seemingly been willing to pay that cost where other games would rather subsidize the cost with customers' subscription money after launch.
All time classic MY NEW FAVORITE POST! (Keep laying those bricks)

I'd love to see what you consider a good "MMO".
The game is great, and you obviously haven't gotten a toon past the first tier of content, or maybe you haven't even played it yet. The game is incredibly immersive and exciting. If you take time out to read what people are saying to you, then you'd understand what the "LORE" that you are speaking about is. Making random comments about things without any proof to back it up sounds stupid. Please explain what "generic and dull" is, and then give me an example of a game that is NOT "generic and dull".
kthx
The game plays alot better than War and WoW not to mention Rift will be more polished compared to WoW and WAR at launch. I don't see what the fuss is all about ? Oh wait, Someone other than Blizzard can be known for its polished content. Big problem there!
I'm not much of a beta player so I didn't take part into any of this. But was the entire game available?
Also, when you try to implement any form of dynamism (events, map is changing, NPCs are changing ect.) you have to put a lot more time to re-design and test everything.
So far those of us that have played in beta's 1,2 & 3 have only either been able to play defiant, guardians or atm we are in beta 3.
We have not been able to play the whole game. So i cant really tell you where all the money went.
All i can say fr the most part the game is looking good, if they continue to attack the bugs, continue to patch as they are the game should release in a good state. For atleast the zones that we have played in so far.
Until i can test more/ see more of the game i cant really give you a good answer of where it all went.

Haven't played the beta.. but watched a stream of it.. looks a lot like Warhammer.
The quest hubs being invaded seems more annoying than anything...
Also the quest givers just magically reappear with no effects after 15 seconds or so?
Don't have high hopes for this one...

I'll split the gold with you.
Or like Aion only showing the first 20 levels to then realise its just one gigantic grind post 20.
It works both ways and in Aion there was a reason they showed us nothing more thna the 20 levels as there was just zero content afterwards, I personally don;t believe rift will be the same but theres every chance it could by, personally won;t be playing it anyway as don;t like the art style.
