What I want to know is this:

Which forum/fansite has decided to push people over here to hype up SoR?

  • rushinrushin Member Posts: 184

well, it beats talking about mourning :) although their forums have become my daily soap opera/

but the SoR community are here simply because we love our game, and it has a tough time getting attention with GW/EQ2/WoW/etc hogging the headlines..

and hi Fwuffyferret, thx for the res a little earlier.. pesky kincher spawn ;)

    lol.

Someone over at the SoR forum started a thread about mmorpg.com ratings.

That's probably why there's an influx of SoR players on this forum.

p.s.  it was all players initated, Nevrax has nothing to do with it.

lol thats funny but SoR is a great game

  • vqlyvqly Member UncommonPosts: 296

Well, the original thread starter didn't post a thread to tell players to come here to hype up the game.  He was just announcing how great it is for SoR to finally show up in the top10 list in the mmorpg.com main page.  That started a snowballing effect I suppose.

Me, I have visited mmorpg.com for quite a few years now, to check out games and mmorpg news.  I just never bothered to register or rate the games before.  But I figure I might as well.

SoR is a fantastic game, I have to agree.  Yes the problem is publicity, not too many are aware of its existance, I suppose using MMORPG.com is a good way to publicise about it.

For anyone who hasnt, why not try out the two week trial at www.ryzom.com enjoy :)

The graphics are darn good, the game is a bit of a grind tho - but I still enjoyed playing it.

SoR is simply a great game. Guilty as charged: we are rabid fans who have an active community, and we're looking to open some fresh eyes to the beautiful world of Atys. If you haven't played it, you have no basis to knock it - and if you haven't played it lately, you should give it another whirl ::::31::

Except for 75% of the other games on the market, I agree with you, it is the best.

I have tried the open beta of Saga of Ryzom and it was a good game but it started to get boring very quickly. Judging by your reaction they must have made a lot of changesimage

I'm prepared to give this game a shot.

I'm downloading the trial right now, and gonna play it until the trial is over.

    Any advice for a newbie?

I'll be playing on the English realm. (name will be Kodansha)

    Wish me luck ::::20::

Rofl, we actually told peeps not to come here and start multiple threads that sound like, "SoR is the shiz nit.....SoR is the best mmorpg ever and rules yours......" We know how annoying that can be.

Keoni's thread was a good one and we were just all excited that we made the list here.

I am a SoR fan and like the game. I urge anyone who has not played it to give it a try to see if you like it or not. You may or may not, but you want know till you try. If you don't, no biggie. There a number of good mmorpgs out there. Just find one that you enjoy and have fun with.

Good luck! ...and, some quick suggestions...

For your starter race, I suggest either Matis (elvish-looking) or Fyros (human-looking), as those are the most populace races, and for whatever reasons their home continents are less prone to lag. (Although, I also suggest you start a Tryker character, just so you can port to their mainland and check out the sheer beauty of it).

For your starter package of character actions, I'd take one "action pack" of craft, mage, and foraging. That will give you a good head start to whatever you want to do later - and even though you will certainly want to pick up melee fighting to some extent (it's the easiest way to gain hit points and constitution, notably), that's very easily picked up on the fly. You'll start out on the "Newby Island" for your race. It's a good place to get used to the basics and grab some quick levels, but I would caution against lingering there overlong.

The real fun starts when you teleport to the mainland (once you leave Newby Island you can't return), and start working in teams with others. If you can find a guild, that's all the better - preferably one with some other newer players in the mix, so you have folks near your level that you can team with. You can become very useful very quickly if you're willing to take the role of healer for awhile... and you can use the intelligence and wisdom you gain from levelling that, to make leveling offensive magic all the easier. Enjoy SoR, and I hope you decide to stay! ::::19::

What's the point of that game? Seemed nothing to do except grind up skills. No useable loot either which made adventuring quit dull. Maybe there's some fantastic endgame, I don't know. Pretty though.

Well...go ahead, convince me to try to the game!  image

You are talking to a ''building PvE beaver'' and the ''aging'' is the key reason why I dont consider the game, since no reason to play if I cant build something up!

There really isn't loot as people are used to in the game (except for a few high level NPC's that drop armor). You will never go kill an animal and find a sword. What does happen is when you kill something you can quarter it's parts. The parts can then be used to craft things. So if I kill a Ragus (dog like carnivour) you will probably be able to quarter a Ragus Ligament. So while there is no loot as people are used to, you can use EVERYTHING that you take off of a dead creature.

To be very honest if you haven't played it, try it. There is enough to keep you busy for at least a few months.

All loot is useable, because all loot is craftable.  Basically I don't want a world where my herbivores are dropping swords and armour, I mean what would they be doing with them in the first place?  You loot things like bones, skin etc and craft them into objects, the crafting system on ryzom is enjoyed by almost everyone.

I'm not sure what you mean by aging, characters in the game don't age.

This is listed as one of the "feature" in the mmorpg.com overview page, and I think it was part of the original design and wishlist, but I don't think it ever made it into the game. I even remember David (main guy of SoR) mentioning in a recent interview that this is still something they'll consider in the future, but not anytime soon.

  • madnakmadnak Member Posts: 1

Aging was always going to be optional, designed as a vehicle for having children. If you didn't have children, you wouldn't age.

The purpose of Ryzom isn't killing enemies or gathering equipment, it's exploring and interacting with the game world and players. This game is, to use Richard Bartle's representation of MUD players, heavily bent toward interacting rather than acting. It really isn't a good game for "achiever" or "killer" types - and it will be less and less so as development continues. Missions and quests are being implemented, but the ultimate purpose of these is to learn more about the game world. Each "rite" that's completed yields an entry in the game encyclopedia, providing story details.

The events that make a difference include all players. They are actual elements of the ongoing story. You won't find a string of quests that make up a story where your character saves the world - you will actually be playing one of many heroes in an evolving game world.
