Sorry, but this was another poorly structured poll. The inclusion of a catch all catagory in a an itemized poll is poor statistical analysis. For mutiple choice tests? Sure, it's fine.

What this poll really says is that FF XIV was the most disappointing because it garnered 64.8% disappointment. This is true because those who disliked all games necessarily disapproved of FF XIV as well.  Likewise STO  comes in second with 61.1%.

This is a more honest representation of the dislike of the top two games in this catagory, and how much they were reviled.

Sorry, but Civ 5 was a disappointment. Civ 4 remains a better game. Bought Civ 5 and after two weeks, uninstalled it and re-installed Civ 4.

This proves what I have been saying since freakin Everquest: MMO gamers are the biggest bunch of online whiners and complainers with loftier expectations than a fat lady at a beauty pageant. Not saying anything against fat ladies, but that's just not what they're looking for at a beauty pageant.

That having been said, there really isn't a current game going that I could honest see myself paying 15 bucks a month for anymore. GTA online would be great though.

No no...people did play it. Just not a lot. That game was completely over-hyped by such small group of people. When the die-hard fans did finally play and was utterly disappointed, the rest of us just laughed at the joke to which we already knew the punchline. So no, it's not the biggest letdown of the year.

To me it sounds like a whiny kid answering that everything sucks... big time... when asked what's wrong. It doesn't do anything to clarify why he's crying or anything to solve the problem he's apperantly having.

Nobody, neither the devs nor the players, is going to get usefull information from the awards like this. None of the new games that did have some positive sides are going to get encouraged from winning an award and none of the new games that were absolutely horrible is going to learn a lesson from losing the award. Because it's simply a draw.

The FFXIV and STO devs can proudly say that while their launch wasn't a shining example in the industry atleast they didn't get the biggest dissapointment award.

The Vindictus and Perpetuum devs can hang their heads because even though they pulled off decent launches with games that brought something to the genre they still didn't get any recognition for it.

Congratulations MMORPG.com, you've managed to finish the apperantly most horrible year in MMO gaming by holding an equally horrible 2010 awards.

I just wanted to repost this. 'None of the Above' and 'All of the Above' answers like what we have here have no place in a reader's choice like this. I realize that MMORPG.com isn't a bastion of journalism excellance, but having an answer like this will almost guarantee it's the highest. Ever seen a website that includes a joke option for one of the poll choices? Those almost always have the most votes.

In conclusion, I'm going to simply ignore the result here and think of the 2nd place winner (FFXIV) as the winner. I guess you can conclude that the game is so bad it can't even win a worst of show award. ^.^

The average rating of the more serious reviewers on the web gave Final Fantasy 14 On line : 50.32%

    http://www.gamerankings.com/pc/960613-final-fantasy-xiv-online/index.html

That's average coming from 19 different reviews.

Some examples: PC Gamer UK 30%, IGN 55%, Eurogamer 50%, GameSpy, 40 %

No discussion with so many references.

Biggest disappointment of 2010?  The rise in popularity of the F2P business model for games.

F2P business model fools (many) players into believing they are getting a good deal while the whole time the company is making more money than they would have from the players had they just sold their game as a straight up retail + monthly fee.

Free 2 Play absolutely benefits the developer / producer and absolutely takes advantage of the players.

I hate F2P, and I am seriously disappointed that so many games and game developers are starting to look at is as a viable business model.  Go away, F2P.

As a business model, all F2P really does is drain money from people with more cash than sense. The real problem is that F2P forces developers to build roadblocks and timesinks into the game in order to get people to pay them. It also often has them focus more on gimmicky, multiuse products (see the XP potions than are abundant in most F2P games) than real, actual content like LotRO's quest packs.

I see a lot of good idea for 2010, no real success for sure but some good points.

Why am I saying this ?

APB was a good idea... i mean "was" because on the paper you could say "omg what a f*cking game" but they created a battle system like this pathetic counterstrike... no real skills, only how many exctazy you eat each battle... no tactic.

STO created a universe, a unique universe (ok they stole the ideas from an epic and old universe).

I'm not talking about all those clones like LotRo, wow expansions and more, they are all the same. Same battle system, same ugly community "omg i reach lvl 40 and got full set with max stats" very poor in real mmo terms.

Fallen Earth isn't released in 2010 but they added so many things this year, big possibility but no courage, no dev rage for take risks.

But... but... now i want to say :

HOW THE F*CK THEY NEVER CREATED NEOCRON 3 !!!

Ok ok, if you are reading me right now you'll know fast i'm not a dragon/elf fan. So i'm talking about the game i already tested =)

Mortal Online pfuiiiiiiiiii is it a joke ? O.O mob bashing like the past years games still alive outside asian population ? A JOKE ¿? !!!!!!!!!!!

If you are asking ppl to spend money and a lot of time on your product, the quality of the product must be exceedingly high. That is a lot to ask of a customer.

    2010 gets the message!

Yup Metacritic score is a 50 for Final Fantasy XIV... I never expected it to be good though. I hated Final Fantasy XI as well though. =p

There is no arguing that FFXIV was a huge disapointment.  SE seems to be trying to be trying to get things together though.  The recent updates have been promising, and lag has been reduced greatly, but I am worried if they do not do something big then FFXIV may take the cake for biggest dissapointment again in 2011 for the PS3 re-release.

    My opinion matters to everyone...

I had big hopes for STO looked like a game that might bring at least a bit of light to the SciFi mmo gaming

Totally agree. 2010 in most regards(MMO's, economy, politics etc) did suck. There have been some bright spots(Perpetuum being one), but over all the year really deserves this award. ^^ As far as "constructive" goes, how about the obvious lessons to be learned? First and formemost don't release a game, just to appease the bean counters and/or investors.  It will always come back to haunt you. Someone needs to point out to these people that they are risking the entire investment for a little upfront cash.

Next, don't allow the hype machine(and the marketing department) to blow expectations up to the extent that even if it was God's gift to MMO's, the game couln't live up to the hype.  Finally, think about your target audience FIRST(in the design document) before you even start coding the game.  Don't try to be all things to all people(Bad Things(tm)) happen when games try that.

Now if your talking about the MMO field a a whole I would tend to agree, although people have ridiculously high expectations from new games. In fact its an open question if any new MMO can succeed when it has to a) have as much content as WoW, b) have new and exciting game play all while c) being polished and bug free at launch.

Any company entering the MMO field now had better be extremely well funded, have a huge, amazingly competent staff, and be completly delusional since they are probably just pissing 50-100 mil down the drain.

I completely agree with this, gaming as a whole had a good year. There were some great single player games released in 2010 that were fun and exciting to play. As for MMOs to me the whole year was a great disappointment, all the games released were nothing to write home about. They didn’t have the appeal or heart of the great single player games. Here is to hoping that maybe 2011 will come close to matching what developers are doing in the single player game market.

I'm surprised Aion wasn't on that list. But I understand all the rest.

Besides the fact that there was zero reason for Aion to be compared to the other games there? Aion has been a success; these haven't.

That depends on how one defines sucess.  Way too many people claimed it was going to be a "WoW killer"...<rolls eyes>

Its obvious that didn't happen. Its done rather well in the Asian markets, but if you look at the western markets there was the typical spike at launch, and then quite the decline in the player base after that.  Even the 2.0 update didn't change that much. The recent changes to make the game more gank friendly didn't help in the western markets either(which was predictable).

Over all, 2010 had rather little to really recommend it MMO wise.
