Now, I've been following some of the upcoming games aswell as some prior games. It's really hard to say that a game can compete with WoW really. They game is like a freak of nature sort of. However, even thou some games have tried... and failed like: Vanguard, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online for example doesn't mean that others will give up!!!
Now, I've been looking into some of the upcoming games in this genre and all I can say is that it will be either:
Star Wars The Old Republic
Or
Guild Wars 2
There are other games aswell though, mentioned in the poll for you to chooses from..... Having hard time to believe those other games would make it more than just ...profitable.... well, nothing wrong with that ofcourse!!!! .... you know though.... what I'm talking about.....

It will be Blizzards next MMO, with the way these devs have been dropping crap game after crap game.
True that, if blizzard made such a huge success with WoW and that was their first mmo, I can't even comprehend how amazing their new project "Titan" will be.
Hmm, I think the Star Wars game looks very promising so far! Guild wars 2 looks nice aswell but in another way....
Compete with WoW?? I hope not!!!! I hope for any of the game to become the "second one" so that one can play it along with alot of others but be spared from the "teenleetz" who desperetaly wanna play - thinking they will make a career out it!
Rift looks awful in every way by the way!!
Unless it's an MMO integrated into facebook or Titan (At this current time), I can't see anyone challenging the 7+ million asian players alone in WoW.
I'll drop my WoW subscription the second GW2 and SWTOR hit the shelves anyway. And I'll have loads of fun with friends in both games, and that's all that matters to me. I really hope both games turn out to be great successes if their gameplay is good. BioWare has delivered so many awesome games that I've enjoyed so much that I really look forward to SWTOR the most right now. GW2 being a close second.
All I can say was laughing so hard at the list of games to vote for. I am thinking only one might stand a chance the rest are dying or dead, even 2 making a comeback.
But they are all niche games, none of them compare.
Lets face it blizzards the 900 pound gorrilla in the room, and the only thing thats going to kill it, is when it slipson the banna peals and falls over dead.
Didn't you learn at school that you can't construct a graph from a single datum?
Give me liberty or give me lasers
I find it hard to understand that people believe GW2 will seriously compete with WoW. WoW is P2P and GW2 is B2P, there are probably going to be many WoW-players who will play GW2 alongside WoW. Ahem, but I think SW:ToR will have the highest chance of being an actual competitor.
This.
SWTOR is being made by Bioware the company that made Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect 1/2 and Dragon Age Origins, all big hits.
And SWTOR has 3 times the budget WoW did.
It's Biowar's ball to drop that's for sure.
if WoW became...well, WoW, it was because it hooked the casual market. The vast majority of the 13m WoW players are NOT crazy raiders putting 10 hours a day into the game. They are casuals
casual players can play between 10 to 20 hours a week.
now, GW2 is anything like GW1. Its a full MMO, with everything that implies. Casuals will get nowhere and get no instant satisfaction just by logging 30 mins a day, unlike GW1. GW2 being a MMO will demand time, if casuals like it they will have to devote their limited weekly play time into it.
So basically yeah, noone stops people from getting GW2 and still keeping their sub to WoW.
But then the majority of gamers, which will be casuals, will wonder "why the f*ck am I stll paying for that sub, if I dont have the time nor the intention to keep playing that game?"
stop comparing stuff to wow ktx
Hahah! i think if blizzard made another mmorpg, they would fail, they cant re-create their own so called " fantastic " creation, it would fail alot. And i dont think they would be able to create something different, so it would seriously be like any other mmorpg.
Who cares? Seriously if the other games are good they will do well. For the sake of god they don't need to compete with Wow there won't be a WoW killer. The only thing that will "kill" WoW is Kotick and the age of time.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
I voted for SWTOR. You know why? Because SWTOR seems so far as WoW type of game. Rift and GW 2 seems a lot better than WoW even if I havnet tried it yet. So we'll see if they will do what they promise in both games.. We have here two amazing peace of art. Btw GW 1 is way better in certain things than WoW.. So this bullshit "which mmo is triying to compete with WoW..." is realy sick. Games which want to compete with WoW are wow clones - other ppl can make theirs own games...
P.S. If you count better than WoW only by more subscribers you are nuts..
Played: Lineage 2,Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online, LOTRO, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, EvE online
Tried: KAL Online, Face of Mankind, ROSE online
Playing: CS:GO
LOL
everybody knows that SWTOR is WoW in space dude. seriously, do some research about the games you like, SWToR is WoW with light sabers and voice acting, what a fail.
there is a wow killer, Its called chuck norris.
And LOL even more you "no reader", Thats what I said, didnt I? Thats why I voted for SWTOR cause its only game which WANT to compete with WoW.. OMG .. What a noob. "SWTOR seems so far as WoW type of game - same what you said - different words. Learn to read. Thx.

On a more serious note...
You know what it's going to take to kill or compete with WoW? Look to Blockbuster Video for the answer. They were the industry leader for many, many years until an industry outsider (Netflix) trounced them. How'd they do it? They made Blockbuster's entire business model obsolete from the ground up. You see, it wasn't another video store that inevitably put Blockbuster into bankruptcy, it was a company/service with no experience in the field that approached things from an entirely different direction. This is the fate of most companies or products that have a monopoly on the market.
Will this happen to WoW? Ultimately it will, unless of course it simply fades over the course of time. Ironically Blockbuster had the oppurtunity to buy Netflix many times, which would have resulted in them retaining the status of industry leader. In the end, however, they thought the threat would come from other video rental stores; a fatal mistake. Obviously, Blizzard is a far smarter company than Blockbuster, so I don't see them going down this path. I think their next MMO is their equivalent of buying "Netflix" so to speak. It's going to be far different from WoW, if not the complete opposite in terms of gameplay, mechanics, etc. The only thing their new MMO will probably share with WoW will be the overall quality, accessibility, and polish.
So the true WoW killer will be Blizz's next MMO (most likely a sandbox with next gen graphics set in a high tech world). Of all the games listed in the original post, SWTOR is the only one I see offering any legit competition. It's a fantastic IP being made by a company with deep pockets and a proven track record. It does have obstacles however: Not everyone is into Star Wars or sci-fi fantasy settings and not every Star Wars fan is into the Old Republic lore. Also, if a large portion of the gameplay ends up being too similar to WoW...ouch.
The competitor will be both SWTOR and GW2.
If BioWare and ArenaNet deliver the games they promise, they could be an interesting one-two punch to WoW. SWTOR will scoop away some of the people looking for an A class sci fi MMO, Star Wars fans, and raiders. GW2 on the other hand will appeal more to those who like fantasy MMO's, casuals, and soloers.
I don't think it will be anywhere near a death blow to WoW. The effect will be most evident in North America, where WoW currently has around 3 million subscribers. I could see that number dropping to 2, with SWTOR and GW2 both garnering 1+.
As you can see by adding up the numbers of all 3, I don't think it will be a zero sum gain. SWTOR and GW2 will both attract new players to the genre, moreso with SWTOR due to the public visibility of the Star Wars IP and BioWare's stellar reputation in RPG's.
Anyone who picked a B2P game failed this question.

I believe its possible that SWTOR will have an effect on WoW subs... but it won't topple it. Blizzards next MMO is the only one that has a chance to. GW2 doesn't have a sub soooo.......

I understand your feelings and dislike for the direction. I don't mind it because it was already a complete themepark game.
Regardless, it does not matter, im sure Blizzard will be annoucing 13 or 14 million subs soon. The world loves wow, even if most of us on an MMO forum looking for a new game dont.

i love reading these threads. they make me laugh at how little thought people put into these " debates" over how great WoW is, and how evry other game is doomed to fail out of the gate because blizzard is the only company that knows how to create a game. The fact is WoW wasnt a great game at release. it took years and lots of patches and expansions to create the game that exisists today. BUT, they did create a social comunity that is prob second only to facebook in terms of people commiting unprecedented amounts of their social identities into, to the point where like, people in bad relationships but suffer from low selfesteem, are almost prisoners of the game by fear of being alone. Millions of WoW players leave to try other games every year, but ultimately come back because they cant find that familiar feeling or connection that they had in WoW. Most every hardcore WoW player i know is bored with it, and has been for a long time but they continue to log in night after night because "the guild is counting on them" or they are afraid "they might miss something". Ultimately, fear of change and faceing the unknown is the greatest WoW strength in staying power, and will be the toughest obstacle for any new game on the market, that will also include the next big game from blizzard.
