Good online beginner's guide?

XerekXerek Member CommonPosts: 61

Just as the title says.  I'm going to get started, but I'm waiting for my new vid card to arrive (Monday, hopefully!).  I wanted to get oriented in the meantime, but the rulebook is far more sparse then the FF XI one.  I'm having trouble finding good online beginner's guides, as most links go as far as to tell me what a sword is, and that it's a good idea to swing it.  But if you want to learn how to become a god in 12 minutes, with all the money, and swords, and use live goblins as weapons and all...just...BUY OUR GUIDE...with full, honest testimonials!

*sigh*

So...is there a good, free online guide out there you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance.

the best guide out there is the one thats says stay the hell away from this mess of a game until PS3 release. But seriously the games leads just got shafted for new ones who intent to do some big changes, so you might as well hold off playing for a while and just follow up with it, who knows how drastic it may be. And yes its pretty crappy right now so you would probly play for a week and realize its a snoozer.

If you cant tell from my icon im a huge FF fan and played FFXI for over 5 years, so im not going into this a WoW-fnaboy or anything, and if you read half of the stuff posted on eveything from reviews to just overwhelming amount of negative posts on the fan sites you will notice the games not worth even installing right now.

I'll give you an actual answer instead of just bashing the game

http://www.ffxivcore.com/tutorials    --> You have some quite good tutorials here, maybe not the best ones around, but they should give you a feel for the current state of the game and how to develop your character.

im not entirely bashing if you read it, im telling him the flat out truth to not open that box and use up the free month until its worth it. With the new team taking over and possible HUGE changes to the overall game it would be almost pointless to play and learn now when ti could be dramaticly different 6 months from now.

Still not answering what he asked. You think he should wait 6 months to see how the game turns out? Of course not, he wants to play now... if those major changes only happen in 6 months time then he has a lot of time to accomplish all the game has to offer right now.

He bought the game, he wants to play it now, now is what matters... not when and if it changes. Simple no?

And to speak the "flat out truth" you have to be sure that all the game mechanics will really change that much in 6 months, are you sure of that? I'm not... I don't have that info available, but if you have it thanks for sharing.

You can also find some guides for various features on our Linkshell Forums, written by myself and other members.  Mostly consisting of internal and external config, NPC locations for armor & weapons, etc  And various posts from Square-Enix I ripped from the Lodestone so they would be easier to find.

We also have a great Maps page created entirely by myself, that displays almost every known NPC w/ subtitles, though I havn't had the urge to update them since before launch.  Mainly cause I'm still irked from the poor launch and I'm waiting for it to get better before delving back in.  I am greatly looking forward to this new Producer/Director delivering on what he's said thus far and hopeful for the community to convince him XIV needs an extensive rebuild, hopefully to end up more like XI in the end, such an amazing MMO.

There are 2 sites out there you can find with a simple google. I avoid them, seeing them as spoilers but the FF14 Loadstone site I use a quite a bit. More for crafting though. Combat is pretty basic. Use your mouse in combination with the W key to move but when the fighting starts, let go of the mouse and move over to the Enter key. The same for harvesting but backwards? In combat, you will use 1 to 0 to initiate combat, use enter to default attacks. In harvests, click the mouse to launch, use the enter button to stop on the dials.

Anyway, back to the top. Loadstone or google for more. 2 will dominate the top of the list and you will decide what one you like best.

There are several good beginners’ guides that you can find here. A few good ones are:

The following website gives you some detailed information about each class and the four discipline types:

And depending on your starting city you may want to take a look at these links. They give you a description about the city as well as connecting areas. It gives you a list of the quests and the location of all the citizens in that town.

Since you can currently create 8 characters for free, I would suggest creating at least two characters and trying 2 different servers to get a feel for them. Try to make them during your peak hours of playtime and see which servers seem more populated. Get to know your starting city a bit and even see if you can level up the job you chose to start with up to level 4 which is very easy and to get a feel for how they play. You should learn two skills by then so you can try them out. Note that about 99% of the skills you learn in the game usually happen in the even numbers. I highly suggest trying out a Disciple of War or Magic class.

You know, as much as I think FFXIV sucks, they're at least not charging anyone to play it until they feel it's ready. So he'd be using his free monthS.

Thank you, all.  I have precious little free-time, so lack of content is not an issue.  I really, really cannot play the standard MMOs any more.  I'm saddened to hear that grouping has fallen out of favor, but what can you do?  My new vid card should be here tomorrow, so I can get the ball rolling.  I'm going to start on Besaid, because I'm a roleplayer, and I hear that's somewhat of the unofficial server for it.

Still, I want to get my feet wet, so thank you for the links.  It will help me hit the ground running.  Hopefully this world can pull me in as much as XI did.

I just order this game. I have never played any Final Fantasy Games. I hope I enjoy it. Most of the games I have played lately do not have much in the way of crafting. Hope to find both engaging fighting and crafting here.
