Hiya JYC ^_^. You make some good points as always. I especially like the way you highlighted the polished state of WoW, and how SOE/LA never got that part of the equation nailed down.
As for responsibility issues re. the NGE, I kind of see it from two perspectives. On one hand, you have that SOE dev post claiming full responsibility for the development and delivery of the NGE. Since SOE was willing to accept full responsibility for the nightmare that was the NGE, I was more than happy to give it to them. On the other hand, however, LA has been very tight-lipped about their involvement. It's obvious that they were involved on some level, but they haven't been as open about their role as SOE. It would be good to hear LA take ownership of their role at some point as well.
Howdy ArcAngel,
I have read the Brenlo post stateing how the basics of the NGE was designed in house. He never says who the "Smart Guys" are but one was identified as Jeff Freeman. Jeff did a follow up on his blog. The rumors that surround the NGE design were that it was to be a new PVP combat system not attacted to any game. Something that was incomplete but experimenting in FPS style to try and break into the Casual Market. When Brenlo said, "Should we do this? Boy this is fun." It was still undecided to impliment the NGE. A design had to come from somewhere.
SWG was an established "Sandbox" MMO with much of its mechanics deeply rooted. Though very buggy, was just starting to turn around with the work of the Live Team. The CU was a hated event as so much was nerfed in its wake( MOB AI for Level, Ledgendary Weapons anyone). Before the game could recover from that drastic change, the NGE was pushed live. If sales performance had been positive with the CU (still based on World Sim), then the NGE would not have happen. Someone required positive performance on the CU in a six month period before a more drastic plan would be done.
You gotta' ask , Who ordered SWG to be a Linear Game instead of a World Simulator? Who tried the game "your way" then said "we do it our way"? SOE in all its blunders would not have the guts to do such a drastic foundation change. It was beyond reason for the developers to concieve. It was a boardroom measure by all accounts.
Why do it? Why not make a new MMO with the NGE? The answer is Star Wars. LA had a tight schedule to meet with the movies, TV and other products(i.e. PC games). On average it takes 3-5 years to design and develope a AAA MMO with proper funding. LA did not have the time. Jim Ward has gone on record of stating it is Unforgiveable for a game company to not meet timed media events for a related product. He made this statement about the Superman Returns Game. That game ended up being released with the DVD because of delays. Jim's first allegiance is to Lucas and to make things work on time. He has no concept of how radical the NGE would change players lifestyles. John Smedley did.

I'm so glad I finally get to say this to the other side of the debate:
PROVE IT!
I've got the head of SOE saying his company's responsible for the NGE. Can you turn your rumors, assumptions, and guesses into FACT to counteract him?
PROVE IT with ONE solid piece of evidence. Please.

This whole thing kinda reminds me of work I used to do in the criminal justice system. We'd have two guys that pulled a heist. One guy held the bag, while another one stuffed it full of goods. Who robbed the place? One guy admits to his role, the other remains tight-lipped. Smed's admitted his role. JYC thinks LA's fingerprints are on the bag. He's probably right, it was a two person job. The reason you can argue all day long that one guy did it or the other is because, in a way, you're both right.

John didn't say his company was responsible. He said "we".
Define we. In all other posts dealing with SWG, we ment everyone involved in making SWG which included Lucas Arts.
To follow up a legal standing, which company would you rather be responsible? The multi-million dollar company or the multi-billion dollar company? Who had the most to gain and be impacted by loosing on the NGE?
I'm just a baby to SWG, and I subscribed for the first time last year to SWG, and I enjoyed the NGE. keep in mind i'm a very old MMO player (played EQ-oldschool, DAOC, Horizons , EQ 2, D&D online, CoH). I have talked to SWG vets who said the game has crashed and burned with NGE; however me being so new to the game I don't know anything else. My point is that even though I liked the NGE I cancelled my subscription because there was a lack of information on the NGE. I knew going in that the game had changed, but I coudn't find out what to do next, who to see, how to go about doing this or that. Even the official website was vague at best on explaining the in-game classes. I was lost , and with no Vets to guide me I became uninterested, and very lonely in a huge universe without someone to be a friend or guide me. To this end I feel that SOE has not only let down it's Veteran player base who was the backbone of the game's community, but also new players who are not only starwars fans, but actually enjoyed playing under NGE rules (because I didn't know anything else) but feel abandoned by SOE's lack of new player support.
To the Veterans : I understand your anger because I felt the same way when CoH started swinging the nurf bat on the tanks thus reducing the enjoyment for paying customers; so I did what any good consumer would do.... Take my hard earned money elswhere. To all of you that left the game I'm not blaming you for empty servers or desolate game world, I say "GOOD FOR YOU", and whatever bonehead move they made in the past to change the game and anger so many of their customers, rest assured they will not make that same mistake again.
Well let's face it, LA does not have a programming staff, so the secret team was entirely made up of SOE people.
I think the game was quite stable prior to NGE, I can't remember anything other then a few minor bugs at that time.
For me, NGE had 3 huge problems. Number one of course was it was so buggy, it made the game unplayable. That is a show stopper in the first place.
Secondly it removed the skill system entirely, you could not train skills anymore, every level 42 medic was like every other level 42 medic. It made leveling pointless, it made training pointless.
Thirdly it allowed anyone to start as a Jedi, probably the most absurd thing they introduced into the game. Jedi were supposed to be rather hard to train, there is absolutely no way you can stick to the storyline and have a level 1 Jedi, that is just preposterous. Nice necro, brah.
