Definitely well deserved. Turbine is really making a name for itself as an awesome company. I think the loss of DDO has to go hand in hand with the fact there's no way to just instantly teleport to your party and go, and that they doubled ALL races prices with the release of Half-Orcs and Half-Elves, which was a GIANT slap in the face.

LOTRO's deed system and gaining cash shop points from it is revolutionary, I just wish some of these idiot companies like Cryptic and SOE would get their heads out of their rears and use it themselves. Instead, they're pretty much running glorified infinite trials, or reinvented the "pay to win" aspect of the Korean Cash Shops. Had it not been for Turbine and LOTRO, I'd have given up on F2P gaming being anything beyond a crap-shoot.

from that list i only enjoyed playing RoM to a certain point... vindictus has such great graphics but dungeon grinder gameplay sux balls, eq2x not for me, plain boring and not gonna pay to pass adept skills (rather sub for a better game),.

LOTRO is a really good looking game and gameplay is really nice too, and the lore is great, but  for some reason i got sick of it before reachin lvl 15-20, cant stand those few races and weird, unique yet boring classes... still great game, grats on wining, tho i moved on to something else

ROM and Vindictus were the only real "F2P" competitiors on this list, the others were P2P titiles that tanked and converted to the "fremium" model to prosper.

How does this game win F2P game of the year when it is virtually impossible to actually "play" for free?

Oh well, I know, but well, ah nvm.

    No surprise here. Well deserved.

It's not quite that clear cut. Wizard101 is actually a fantastic game, but it isn't really P2P - you only get 10 levels free before you need to subscribe. In my opinion, it's just as good as LotRO, albeit much simplier due to the wider audience.

Huh? You can play for free all the way to the top (level 65). That's not paying a dime. Not only is there quite a bit of content for free, but as you play you gain points (for free) that you can use to buy other content (for free). So basically, you play for free AND Turbine pays YOU to play. I take it you haven't actually looked at their system very much?

If that's not free to play I don't know what is. Just because you have to either earn (by playing for FREE) or buy (unless you earn it by playing for FREE) *extra* content doesn't mean all the other content (there's a lot) isn't free.

I don't think it's any surprise that a game built to the P2P standards, which are MUCH higher than the cash shop fueled grindfests and wow clones that dominate the F2P landscape, got the highest rating.  LotRO is a good game.  The opposite end of the spectrum, Runes of Magic, is a bad game.  Actually, the only one I think is in the wrong spot is Wiz101.  It sets itself out to be a kid's game, and does so very well.  The "free to try" nature of it is friendly towards kids and their cautious parents.  I would rate Wiz101 much higher.  It's actually pretty good, for a kid's game.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

It's not a ranking, it's a poll.  It's entirely possible had the voters ranked the games, EQ2 would have come out 2nd.

  • zodwraithzodwraith Member Posts: 3

EQ2:Ex totally deserved it's near last place ranking. The game is so crippled vs standard EQ2 it's simply another classic SOE attempt at "me too" that essentially forces you to p2p. You can't even call it an intro  to a sub cause the sub servers are seperate from f2p servers so say goodbye to any friends you make when you get sick of being nickeled and dimed. If you're an EQ fan you should be subbed. Ex is a pale shadow to the real game and just a sucker hook.

DOn't let anyone tell you otherwise, LOTRO is a great game, though not for me. It is great if you are not interested in PvP. PvE wise, it is a great game even if combat works like WoW.

The only problem is it does not live up to the epicness of the LOTR series. For the trilogy that inspired all other fantassy MMOs, I was dissapoint with LOTRO.

A great game and a great transition to F2P.  Bravo, Turbine.

    Good work Turbine.

Woohoo! Go Lotro, glad they made it. It really is a fun game even if I don't have the time to play it anymore. Gratz to the team, the award is well deserved.

You only have one life. Are you living it the way you should?

Does anyone responding to this thread know if say you long ago purchased Mines of Moria, does that allow me to play a runekeeper or do I still have to pay extra for that.  This pretty much makes my decision on playing it.  If I WOULD have to pay for that class.....how much would it set me back?

    STOP calling it Free o.O

Some people who spend TONS of time in those games may be able to play for free, but anyone with a hint of a life, in order to have fun (unless you like grinding your teeth out) will have to pick up the card. If it was free they wouldnt make any money, would they?

And yes, YOU might be able to play it for free and have fun. But you are not everyday player. You're an exception.

Funny thing is .. if you had a job or some sort of income you wouldn't have much trouble affording 15$ a month.. ;)

Gratz to Turbine, I been around lotro since phase 1 closed beta, had many a great hours of  fun with friends, just a little burned out for the moment, I am sure I'll be back in middle earth with the next expansion.. If I can break away from TOR that is..:)

  • SanisterSanister Member UncommonPosts: 17

Gratz but.....I dont know that it should have been in that list. It had a big budget behind it and launched as a P2P MMO.....which drew income from Box sales, Lifetime membership sales & monthly subs.

F2P for a few months suddenly makes it eligible to compete against ones that haven't had the same.....

I'm just saying...maybe it should have to compete in a P2P gone F2P recently category.

Your remarks are ill advised Templar.

Disagree with EQ2X ranking and the comments that it's an Pay to Win game. You can fully enjoy the game and all of the content for very little fee. I payed a 1-time $10 fee to get Silver which opens up the game quite a bit. Any further restrictions are easily and cheaply taken care of with Station Coin ... equiping fabled, scribing expert spells cost .25 cents. I'd much rather have the option of doing that than running into quests or zones that i can't access.

LOTRO is a game that offers nothing new. I didn't like it at all.

  • MysteryBMysteryB Member UncommonPosts: 355

Whoa haha, Runes of Magic has dropped alot on the "best f2p game" title. But like the game its based off of (WoW) everything must come to an end, the F2P gaming market is growing and succeeding, I wish P2P would do the same. Since FFXIV and all other 2010 P2P games were just awesome. (sarcasm)
