Something like Runescape, but not

ThaPyngwynThaPyngwyn Member Posts: 12

I want to play a game like Runescape, but not boring, and not Warcrack- um, Warcraft (No offense to WoW players, but I am commited to staying away from that game). I like freedom and variety, things I thought RS did well, but it didn't keep me enterrtained. Let me explain.

I enjoyed all the silly, stupid skills in RS (Firemaking? Yes, please!), but the game itself bored me to tears. I think it was because it was too simple. I especially didn't like the fact that group questing/parties wasn't an integral part of the game. But I did like how you could specialize in non-combat roles (I was content to spend most of my time in RS mining and smelting, as mundane as that may sound). I get the impression that most MMORPGs that have combat and non-combat roles don't strike a good balance, i.e. one or the other is tossed on top like an afterthought. I want a game that allows me to do either, or both, should I so choose.

That was something I loved about Star Wars Galaxies (before it was "improved"); the free-form gameplay that let me be a space-rambo, a pastry chef, or a mining tycoon, or some ugly combination of the three, while having depth and variety for each style of gameplay. The play-driven economy was a bonus, though it could have been better.

In my research on this question, the answer invariably reached was "play WoW." WoW sees tilted far too much towards combat (I don't know; I've never played it), but I want to avoid WoW for other reasons, namely because I hear that it's hard to stop playing. I've also looked at, but not played, Darkfall, but I'm a tad skeptical about putting that much money into a game reviewed as being so rough around the edges. (I was with SWG from day one, and the drastic changes that that game underwent to clean up its rough edges makes me reluctant to come too far out of pocket for any pay-to-play game, though most developers seem to have more sense than SOE).

Am I being too demanding? Is a game like this unfeasible? Is WoW the answer? If I want to be a butcher, and baker, or a sword-wielding head-taker, is there any game (besides RS, WoW, or DF) I can play?

     Ashen Empires maybe? http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/133

I havn't been anywhere near that game for atleast 4-5 years though so I have no clue what sort of state it is in, but as far as "silly skills" go it had lots of options for leveling up besides quests and killing stuff (actually the fastest way of leveling up at the start was by spooling up thread lol).

Edit: er.. it seems it is p2p now, that is odd and unfortunate, it was f2p when I was playing but it is definetly not worth a sub fee.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. Runescape has that same "f2p, but pay for extra content" thing but Ashen Empires sounds less restrictive on the free side.

You could look into Mabinogi if you don't mind anime-ish graphics. There's a good mix of combat and non-combat activities, and a combat system that is a bit more challenging.  It's also F2P.

Fallen Earth doesn't have a whole lot of silly skills, but you do have a choice in how you level. Pretty much everything you do earns you experience and skill points. You can spend those skill points in any skill you want. So you can do low level combat, and skill up your crafting skills. Or do a bunch of crafting and crafting quests and skill up your combat skills.

I did not explore the full range of crafting, but most of it seemed to fall under stuff for combat, stuff to eat and medicines.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Mabinogi's cutesy, anime graphics make me a little queasy, but I'll give it a try. (Sorry if I sound picky, but it's the truth). Fallen Earth, while decidedly not cutesy, has me stuck with MMORPG sticker shock. Maybe I'll get over that and play it (I have an aversion to playing free trials; I don't know why). I checked out the website though, and the crafting/tradeskill stuff sounds cool, especially the "you can craft a car, but it might take a few weeks" part.

Forsaken World? It is in closed beta phase 3 right now. In phase 4 next month it will be open to everyone. Or Fantasy Earth Zero, if you want to seem some gameplay just check out my youtube channel. I am uploading a FW instance right now, so wait for that =).

The population is low....about 50 -100 on at a time at most, but it's a wide open world, tons of classes and you can train in them all.

    In depth crafting.

Th enire game is F2P as a human.  P2P if you want to play a dragon or other race.
