meh people say WoW has the worst community but obviously they never played AoC Tyranny server lol
but anyway, i don't see a way to really change it, but Blizz could police the chat ALOT more, that would help some. but Blizz would never spend the money to do it, they don't make enough money or something....
I REALLY liked Fallen Earth's community and if some one stepped a toe out of line a GM was instantly on them in the general chat and they have what 1% of the funds available to them that Blizz has?
I don't know how the NA WoW community is, but I play in an european server and the community is just fine. The trade chat is clean most of the time, even when there's a lot of people playing.
Most of the complaints about community I've read are posted by american players. I don't know if that have something to do with it.

In my opinion what is affecting WoW is also affecting other areas of our lives. Look around you when you go shopping or to a restaurant and watch how people behave generally. It is not only WoW it is the lack of discipline that is causing these problems.
that way you could seek out the good guilds and put them under a shared banner to give people access to nice players for the groups they want to run instead of having to swim in the cesspool of anonymous dungeon/battleground groups. Instead of having to rely on the dungeon finder to fill out your group with a ninja looting lolspammer, you could just recruit in someone from your alliance.
since ppl dont run with their guilds every single time, i agree to this.... im playing wow and i hate every time i roll "need" for a piece of cloth or a staff (as a mage) and a freakin warrior or paladin greeds it, gets it, then leave the group...... but thats not only a wow community issue, ive seen all kind of idiots in every mmorpg i have played....f2p and p2p
I think it's Exagerated a bit how bad Warcraft community is. If I compare the 4 years I played Everquest with the 4 years I played Warcraft it's not even close. Everquest was hands down worse. From Ksing, camp stealing , trains , people taking items off corpses that isnt theirs, in ability to play, to people just being nut jobs. Dealing with people in Everquest was 10x more frustrating than WOW.
These discussions always remind me of a penny arcade cartoon. I don't remember exactly how it goes, but it was something like: Normal decent human being + Internet anynomity (sp?) = asshat. Every mmo community has this fact working against it. The one general thing that could help is creating game mechanics that force players to take into account their avatar's reputation. Games like DAoC were so small (even at peak, they were a third the size of any other game b/c of the faction system) that most people of the same level knew each other, so your reputation was of vital importance for getting groups, which was of vital importance for advancing your character. This, I'm pretty sure was a collateral benefit of the game design, not done on purpose to create a good community, but it still worked. In that respect, WoW, and their community is a victim of their own success.
There are other ways to promote good communities, but don't expect to see them in WoW any time soon. That game was created from the ground up to be a commercial, mainstream success, and that is what it is. If you are looking for a better community in WoW, follow what a lot of previous posters have said and find a guild. If that doesn't work for you, then find another game. If WoW's style of games is what you're looking for, no worries, there are several out there to choose from, and some of them, like LoTRO, sound like they have fairly solid communities.

Yeh. I agree 100%. EQ is a way worse game. I played it since beta and can't stomach the horrendous camping after 1 year of player. I have playing WOW for 3-4 years now and still having fun.
And dungeon finder is a god send. It is great to rage quit on people who can't play the game, with NO fear of repercussion. I PUG a lot more because of it .. and of course i will also have nice guild runs where i know everyone can play the game.

I can't need on gear that has agility or strength on my priest and I can't need on cloth on my warrior when I'm using the LFG tool. How those imba paladins/warriors hack the game so that greed wins over need is beyond me. If you greed on an item you need, then it is your own fault to be honest.

A lot depends on which things annoy you more. Personally, I have little problem with 'rowdy' chat so Wow's general chat channels really do not horrify me at all. In contrast I have big issues with games that allow bullying and oppressive behaviour so EVE's community tends to offend me.
WoW has by far the biggest playerbase of any game in existence so it's a mathematical triviality that: more people = more idiots. Blizzard can hardly be blamed for that.
Hate to break it to you all, but EVERY mmo has the same problem. Every single one of them. It's like being forced to listen to a room full of teen (or pre-teen) testosterone induced chest thumping. Or an entire schoolyard full of kids all yelling, "Me! Me! Me!" just to be heard or worse, because they are bored with nothing better to do than bully, belittle and slander anyone they can.
It's no different on any other game.
How is it fixed? Well, enforced adult servers is something I've always advocated. Though I realize how impossible enforcing it would be. If the game developer even wanted to, that is.
Here's a better suggestion, as posted by another in this thread:
"There is one other way to fix it, but it would take massive work on Blizzard's part. Thats a report/ban function similar to forums with as many moderators as it would take. You think someone is asshatting off in trade, you report him. The mods get enough reports on one dude, they give them 3 days off from playing. They keep asshatting it over and over, the mods step it up to 7 days off, and no they shouldn't refund your money for the days you missed. Bottom line is there has to be conseiquences to thier actions prior to anything getting better."
I most certainly WOULD pay more on a server that had moderators or GMs enforcing the behavior of these mouthy punk kids who ruin the game for everyone simply because they can. At least if that was possible, someone would actually being doing something about the thousands of unparented kids running amok with their mouths full of verbal diarrhea. Unparented? Well the parents don't give a damn what their kids do as long as they do "it" elsewhere (don't bother me, go to your room). The PC and the Internet is the new Babysitter, after all.
Give me a Report function/button in any mmo. I'll report every asshat gladly. Make it so you must write out a reason for it, in support of why you think the report is valid (or every asshat will use the report feature just to BE an asshat). Get banned for reporting needlessly or be banned for being reported x many times in x period of time. Not so hard at all. There already are in-game GMs for tickets, make them deal with Reports as well.
While they are at it, let me Report the asshats with inappropriate names as well. You know who you are.
And btw, sometimes one must use the /trade or /general channels in a game for legit reasons - and be forced to deal with the asshats trying to be "cool" by calling others names like "newb" and calling people "gey, gay or ghey". You can't ignore everyone, can you? And you can't ignore every person's characters either, if there was even a way to know who was who without asking.

Not likely. That level of effective GM's/moderator support would be way too expensive to justify to the bean counters. Most games pay lip service to such things, but effective enforcement is just too full of problems and costs to be worth it to them.
Effective GM's/Moderators don't grow on trees. It takes time and experience to learn how to handle situations without causing more problems. Time being money, its rather unlikely that any game company is going to use trained personnel to baby sit their chat channels.
Using volunteers opens up several other nasty cans of worms. Looking at it from a cost/benefit perspective, they aren't likely to invest in such things, any time in the near future. Lip service is cheap. Effective action costs time and money.

This.
Although I agree with the mathematical aspect of more people = more idiots, I do not think it's viable to say Blizzard can hardly be blamed for it.
I have a bunch of analogies to use to prove my point here but as I sit and type them, i realize they will all spark a derailed debate, so I'll save them for a more appropriate time. In the meantime, i just want to ask how one could think Blizzard is not at least part of the blame for hosting a game that supports and promotes MILLIONS of players to be in the same virtual space together. Millions of players that prior to Blizzard's big game, would have never wanted anything to do with eachother as many of them are not interested in the same style of gameplay in the first place.
How many times have we been in groups/raids listening to people talk trash to eachother about their CoD match they had before raid time? or their team build in their sports games? or their high score / achievements in the newest and trendiest Zombie killing game? How many times have we heard these 'sorts' of players say negative things about older RPGs and MMOs? Not saying anything's wrong with liking other games than WoW, of course... Just giving an example of how all sorts of players from different spectrums of gaming are all drawn to (intentionally) Blizzard's game. There's a touch of this and a touch of that BUILT into the game by design for this very purpose.
More players = more money. "who cares if they don't get along? Who care's if there's a huge age range? who cares if X feature shouldn't be in an MMO, but is implemented just to attract Y demographic?"
Make the game more difficult to level, force more group content, and implement a severe death penalty... This will keep all the fps gamers away and restore the fantasy mmorpg genre back to where it used to be when EQ was in it's glory days..
I agree very much. The twitch crowd and rpg crowd seem to be in constant flux over which is being catered to by Blizzard at any given moment. They try to keep both sides happy but in the end the FPS folks ruin the community as they tend to do in all games that attract their ilk.
You know this gets so old. EVERY mmo has a bad community. DCUO yesterday..the /shout was AWFUL! In WOW a GM would have stepped in and stopped it. They dont talk like that in WOW. What you see how people are in real life. When the doors are closed and no one can see who you are. Then we have people like _______ that think they are above all this. Your not different..sorry.
Yes yes .. its always that other guy not you. So some will agree with the OP and some will not. You dont like that chat dont read it.. dont like the poster in chat /ignore.. there you go. Grow up this is the way the world is.

No no.. EVERY MMO has bad -players-. Not every MMO has a bad community. The reason these topics always surface is because there are quite alot of players that don't act like complete jerks in game chat or bully/harass/belittle others on the game forums and they become quite saddened and disgusted when a game they like oozes bad behavior.
Sure the world is terrible and filled with terrible people but why should people stop expecting better behavior just because some of you are willing to shrug it off, lie down and be walked over?

I do not recall any incidents like that in my years playing WoW.
Also why would you be bothered by this? People discussing theire interests outside the game is very much community-building since people can relate to each other through shared experiences not tied to the game.
It's a big plus for WoW that it attracts so many diverse groups of players and lets them play the game the way they want.

I'm not bothered by people getting along... for frakk's sake, this is the kind of response that just irritates the hell out of me.
Trying to twist my words into something ridiculous so I sound completely off base just to convey that you don't agree with me. What I'm bothered by is that it's 'ok' and totally acceptable for people to bring their adolescant rants and trend speak into the gameworld, and bombard others with it, but when someone on the other end voices their lack of interest, they get flamed and criticized. I'm bothered that it's ok and acceptable to fill up a community's chat window with chuck norris and fart jokes and a thousand different ways to spell "noob" but when someone tries to RP in an RPG, they get laughed at, flamed, criticized, and ultimately are not given the freedom to enjoy the game as it was intended, but now have to adhere to the new world order of bastardized chat. And I'm really bothered by the fact that these AAA title fantasy MMO's cater to this new crowd and make changes to the games all to benefit and reward them instead of the real RPGers simply because there's less 'real rpg'ers" than there are immature crap talking a$$holes that make up the community. But yeah, I guess I'm supposed to just brush that off right? Because playing an MMO I don't need to interact with others or anything.... *sarcastic sigh*
Also, WHY would I care what's good for WoW? Why do you? Why am I not allowed to care what's good for me, the player? or what's good for the community? I can care less what's 'best' for WoW's revenue stream. That would be a shameful state of being if you ask me.

Whoa... doesn't your need roll go before his greed roll?
So even if you roll a 1 and he rolls a 100 you gets it because you rolled need and he rolled greed?
