Cryptic Studios has announced that lifetime subscriptions for both Champions Online and Star Trek Online will be on sale for 20% off beginning January 25th. The sale is in celebration of Champions going free to play and Star Trek Online's first anniversary.
To celebrate the launch of Champions Online: Free for All and the one year anniversary of Star Trek Online, we’ll be discounting the price of Lifetime Subscriptions for both games by 20%! The sale starts January 25 at 6 a.m. Pacific and ends February 4 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Everyone who got burned or knows someone who got burned buying a lifetime sub to Champions the first time around, raise your hand.
*raises hand*
I can almost see the lifetime sub to STO because there are people who enjoy the game and play it on a regular basis. But Champions? I just don't see it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Just another blatant attempt by Cryptic to see how many more suckers they can bilk out of hard earned green.
Shameless.
299.00?! How do you justify a lifetime sub for 299.00 when a far superiour game, Lord of the Rings Onlinen was only 199.00 when they offered their life time sub?
$300 seriously?
So basically Cryptic is saying "Our game sucks so bad that we had to make it free to play just to get some people on the servers. How about you ignoring that, ignore the fact that both our games were universally reviewed poorly and that STO will be free very soon and just give us your money!"
Can you imagine what it must be like to work at Cryptic and always wonder if and when the doors will be closing? To always be offering discounted offers each month in the hope of staying in business? To have your name and your work associated with the poor performance of these two games? You think Zinc is ever gonna see a job as Executive Producer in the next decade again?
when i read this i had to check that the date wasnt april 1'st ... twice..
seriously though.. is there anyone out there gullible enough to actually buy this? given the history of both games, and the debacle that surrounded the first round of 'lifetime' subs .. really have to wonder..
You'd be surprised. There are over a dozen people on the forums who are actually excited about buying this.
I think Jack Emmert sold Atari a bill of goods when he convinced them to buy Cryptic. Part of that was how fast Cryptic could churn out product. Now Atari is stuck with a company and two high-profile MMOs that they can't recoup their investment on. I don't think Atari management has a clue what Cryptic is doing. Otherwise, nobody would sign off on stupid schemes like this that most gamers are simply going to laugh at.
CO isn't a bad game, but it needed better creative personnel and management. The Free-To-Play is a joke. Only freeloaders will be attracted and they will make the game unpalatable for the minimal playerbase Cryptic has left.
"Soloists and those who prefer small groups should never have to feel like they''re the ones getting the proverbial table scraps, as it were." - Scott Hartsman, Senior Producer, Everquest II
"People love groups. Its a fallacy that people want to play solo all the time." - Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, Rift
I am glad I was able to get a refund on my money that I paid for the lifetime membership when it first came out. though I thought it was just 199 then, maybe not dont really remember. The game wasnt that bad but it wasnt that good either. I might try the f2p but I wouldnt spend any money on it.
It is kind of a strange thing to do... "Hey guys our game is going free to play! Buy a lifetime subscription!"
Buying a lifetime subscription to a free game.... almost makes you wonder.
Cryptic just don't give up 'sad".
Cryptic: Here's a free game!
Everyone: Okay.. it's still pretty crappy though.
Cryptic: Pay us $239.99 for our free game!
Everyone: What the fuck are you smoking?
Now with 57.3% more flames!
I would'nt pay 300$ for both, not even 239$. Now asking 300$ for each... LOL.
Everyone: we are blind sheep and will buy whatever you offer.
Cryptic: yay for stupid consumers!
Pretty sure the old lifetime sub for this was around 200$, and now that people know the game sucks they want to charge more? lol?
Its because they have to make up for all the people not paying.
Oh but I joke.
My despite for this company grows in leaps and bounds everytime they put out a statement of any kind. Why are these people still in business? Are MMO gamers so in need of a fix that they'll support any greedy assed company that puts even the most vile games in front of them?
We deserve what we get in this genre as we can't seem to resist buying from these greedy, lazy assed bums.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
The big question for anyone playing those games is:
What does the subscription offer that the free game doesn't?
That's what you need to look at to decide if it's worth the cost. Those who don't intend to play obviously don't find it worth it and need not comment. (Though I agree they are pricing their lifetimes a bit high when comparing to the others.)
Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...
This is an early April fools prank isn't it ?
lol
I fell for this crap the first go around. I played CoH and thought Cryptic was a good company. I'm not sure what the hell happened to them, but I will NEVER buy another lifetime sub to anything they put out. Cryptic went from my favorite MMO company to a joke in what felt like overnight, and they've yet to recover. It's sad really...
I'm embarassed for this company. Though to be fair, CO would've been a decent non-subscription game.
The idea of paying for any of their products on a monthly basis is HILARIOUS.
wow. the people on that forum are eating that shit sandwich right up. no hesitation at all.
This, its like the people who claim they hate a game then spend all day trolling its forums.
Also for all teh whiners, if you dont like it? DONT BUY IT, the fact that you feel you need to scream about how your not going to buy it is quite sad.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
CO was a good game, just short lived. Sucks.
300,- ..a two year sub plan is kinda expencive.. there are pople who bin plaing it from the start tho, quite a lot of folks. some who can spare the cash will get it.
CO aint a bad game, nor is STO or DCO or <enter any non-tradition mmo> folk just like to spread hate
anyway, the livetime is more for old timers who know they will stay and play anyway..
