This past week, En Masse sent out a detailed fan letter about the Westernization of TERA and information about the Archer class. In his latest TERA column, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller takes a closer look at those two pieces of information and expands on them a bit. Check out what Garrett has to say and then add your opinions about the news this week in the comments below.
First, the westernization of any game is a very popular topic these days. With China, Korea, and Japan becoming massive markets for online games there is always a cross over between audiences. When games are developed now on either side of the Pacific they are always developed thinking of how the game will be received on the other side. TERA is one of these games. I have said that the art style of TERA does cross some boundaries but overall it is Asian. I think the way the game is designed has a distinctly Eastern feel to it. They still have tried to cross over and give the game a unique style, but overall upon first glance the game is very clearly Eastern style.

Nothing new? Nothing except you have to aim your shots ( WHICH IS HUGE ) and have the OPTION of charging abilities ( WHICH IS HUGE). Playing archer in Tera will be a whole new archer experience.
Ya, Nothing new to see here. Are you on something? You praise westernization and yet ramble on about how theres nothing new to see?
Westernization MAKES the game boring and nothing new to see. It basically takes a unique game and tries to make it as close to WOW as possible.
on another note, I've never understood people who make posts on forums claiming that everything is wow clone! Yet the masses flock to RIFT which seems to be more like wow than anything else ive played.
KILL WESTERNIZATION! ALL WE NEED IS TRANSLATION!
"Lastly let’s talk about the Archer class. From the definition we are given it appears very much like a Warcraft Hunter. Traps, bows, quick movement and keeping your foes at range are all part of the archer’s description."
You are kidding right? How DARE an archer use a bow and be fast at all?
That's totally not archer-ish! These methods should only be used and are unique to a Warcraft hunter.
Looks pretty cool! I love archer classes so I'm gonna be checking this one out.
Well there will be a beta for us in 2-3 months i guess. Now is the time of korean release that will launch the next week. After they server Japan, after is our turn.
So yes, nothing new for us till the end of Q1 i guess. You impatient guys should play something else in meantime if you are so bored waiting.
Goddam that game is pretty ;-; Ugh...friggin action-mmo's have not done well in my experience, but I'm rearing to give this the benefit of the doubt and try to get into one of those betas. If nothing else I'll enjoy walking around looking at the scenary.
And by scenary, I do NOT mean the hookers ---er, sorceresses. Just throwing that out there.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
I'll probably buy/play this game but I cant stand the retarded animie graphics. Massive muscles, small head, huge weapons, tiny miniskirts. Horrible
Mr. Fuller, before you make generalized assumptions about a game, please do some research into how the game works. With regards to the archer, you are getting that something new; the game is being designed with an emphasis on controls that have players actually aim their attacks. Perhaps that seems trivial to you, but it's a big deal for many players.

And in Darkfall... twitch based combat entirely.
Agreed, well translation and currency exchange, unless your credit card company will be able to pay for the game in Wons .
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
No it isn't and no it isn't. Both have been done before. Darkfall has actual arrow physics.
Well, yes that is true. But it's not just does it have twitch-based combat or not. It's how the twitch-based combat actually handles. Take Darkfall, in that game the movement mechanics don't feel right to some people. Some people also find the combat to be too clicky. Will TERA be different? I don't know because I've never played it, but it might have a combat system that I find more appealing. In which case, it's "new."

Something "feeling more appealing" to "some people" is not a huge new feature. It's just a slight variation that may appeal to some other people.
I can see your point, but I don't think that viewpoint is entirely accurate (same thing with mine, I'll concede). But think of Eve Online and City of Heroes. Both have targeted hot-key combat. It's the same "feature" but it plays out differently in both games. One of the biggest complaints with Eve Online is that the gameplay is boring. I don't normally see this same gripe for City of Heroes. For someone disliking Eve Online's combat, City of Heroes combat would be "new and refreshing."

Slight variation? You might as well tell us that dynasty warriors has the same combat as M&B. Doesn't mean it's actually true.
You don't get it, right ? Archers normally wear light armor and therefore are way faster and quicker than someone, who wears heavy armor.
I'm pretty sure that that was sarcasm.

If you know what you claim and have the abilities claimed why don't you write a book? It would be popular. Maybe start writing here....gonna have to be more than puffing epeen tho.
+1
Agree completely, but a little burst in the exp ration and more quest for us is not a big deal, leveling more fast help casual too, and you can make more alts in the long run.
well, to redesign these metrosexual male models, we see in asian games, would not hurt.

eastern style = semi naked / big boob

western style = covered with cool shiny, spiky, milky, dark-ish buttered armor / small boob
"I do think TERA will westernize better than many of the other games that have come over."
maybe they shouldnt have asianized it in the first place, didnt see a good asia > western conversion so far, doubt i will see it here.
grind is grind. (nanaaaa na nana)
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Everyone is claiming WoW is some what the birth of all RPG and MMORPG. its like saying all car manufacturer copied the 1st car ever invented -steeringwheel, 4 round wheels, 4 doors, hood and boot, etc....ffs stop complaining and play the game if its good, or just go play a board game. every developer has the right to develop the way they want their game to be. it's their game, develop your own if you think you have what it takes to make a new type of MMORPG thats not using any RPG rules or game play. just stop whining like a pup.
Eastern or Western, a game is a game. love it or hate it, your choice.
As for grinding, if you dont enjoy grinding, then just go play a private server that gives you something like Lv100 at start up or just play Sims Online/ Second Life. i promise you... no grinding needed, ever.
P.S. BTW good or bad, I think most games deserve a pat-on-the-back for trying. visual wise many games including TERA looks awesome! I'd play it with a open view and mind. eventually we'll get bored and move on to a new game when it comes out. peace!
