I guess I'm supposed to say that this is biased as I have played many of the major titles in the genre worth subscribing to.
I was amazed how quickly everything set up, only took maybe 45 minutes to download the game. I didn't feel compelled to choose either side, so I just went with the Guardians as they sounded like the good guys. Even after watching the intro and fully exploring the website I still don't feel like I was polarized to make that decision.
I don't have much experience with beta testing but it felt polished until I was able to choose my race, and customize my character model. At that point I was immediately turned off. After that it basically held my hand and makes me think the target audience is very young or needs to be spoonfed. UI and gameplay reminded me tremendously of WoW and LotRO, and I found myself not reading the quest dialouges since it told me what to do on the right side of screen, and where to go on my minimap. Poor immersion compared to its predecessors.
I picked Bard since it seemed the least WoWish and I thought the musical element would be fun. The downtime is VERY minimal, and made me feel like I was playing Aion again grinding from mob to mob. The auto-attack weilding dual knives was very fast. I really couldn't notice a difference between spamming my special attack, just letting the auto-attack kill the mob, or trying to strategically time special attacks between knife swings. So I started using this rotation: TAB > 1 > drink soda > right click for loot.
Does it get more involved as you level up? I just kept getting the feeling of "been there, done that" but maybe I've become jaded after playing so many titles. I know they renamed it because the Rifts are what makes it stand out from similar titles, and the other big appeal was the greatly customizable class system. The chat was horrible, basically a constant stream of trolling. Did I pick a bad class, or is this game just recycled in a very bland way?

After reading many of the responses here and in other threads I realized Rift definately has some redeeming qualities- just not aimed at me or others who have a unhealthy appetite for mmorpgs. It seemed rehashed immediately, but for someone new to the genre it could very well be fresh and exciting. Had I given it a chance the charming and complex soul trees may have won me over, but as someone cleverly stated earlier- I had "an almost-instant visceral dislike" to this game and didn't stick around to get hooked.

youre right is like wow or warhammer, but even those games are better than rift: plains of junk. very generic and bland
Yeah, just like all the other mmo's you've played the first five minutes of the game is what you do the entire time....
Stop the presses! There are two people that don't enjoy the gameplay in a MMO!
Kill mobs, souds like it
I have been FORCING myself to play through this beta because I keep hearing how awesome this game gets. It has opened up a little, but it's still very generic and bland. I am going to keep playing in the hopes that somehow it grows on me, but so far I am not feeling it.
Gameplay and combat is of huge importance towards my enjoyment of a game. I realize 5 minutes is nothing compared to the vast amount of content available, but the combat mechanics, quest system, UI, character models, just felt a little too familiar. Also, I was hoping to get an idea about combat during later levels after branching out a bit. Is it still pretty much spam a couple keys between auto-attacks?
Why the hell do we need dozens of threads about people playing the game for five minutes? If that's enough for your Asperger's to kick in, just shrug and move on. You're actually complaining that a tutorial is "hand holding" too much. Just move on.
Five minutes in most games will never tell you what the game is about. You have to move beyond the starter area.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I agree and I am from the old school if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all. I understand that opinions are important but stupidity isn't.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
This is how I feel too.

You feel same way I did after playing it, or that I should not share my thoughts on the game?
Rift is just the next Warhammer and Age Of Conan.
Not that I like rift.. but thats halarious!
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I played more then five minutes..while a enjoyed the game, I've noticed that the game is too generic...the same old hotkey mmo.
And im looking for a diferent combat experience in mmo, like TEra or even Gw2.
Rifts is the only good thing about the game, because is the only thing that keep u away from quest grind.
I've enjoyed it. It's nothing revolutionary but if you like MMO's you'll most likely like Rift. And I highly doubt it will be like Warhammer or Age of Conan, there's way more polish to it than either of those games even currently have. Playing for 5 minutes and making a thread about not liking it, though? Lol
I loved the PQ's in WAR, but they were only fun if the zone was filled with players to do them with. If you were behind or ahead of the masses while leveling it was kinda lonely in that regard. I really loved the combo-system of AoC and the art style was just to my liking (not my old graphics card's though). The end-game raiding of AoC was quite challenging in general, the sieges were fun, and the PvP battlegrounds were a blast until the population started dwindling and que times dragged on. Yet, I knew I would enjoy that game from the moment I beat up the first pirates after washing ashore. First Impressions are quite powerful on me I suppose.

If a major website or magazine claimed they took 5 minutes to play a new game to review it, would you care about their opinion much? I wouldn't, and I don't care about this one either. Just move on.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
lol...your a sandboxy fan, a Darkfall fan, and you stroll over to a theme-park style, whcih you dont appreciate and admit bias against Rift.
I dont like mexican food, but I know it and dont walk into a restaurant just to get a taco so I can your food sucks. Heh...alrighty then.
This is just one of those threads one can not take seriously. Five minutes is hardly enough time to realize anything when it comes to an MMO. In example, the OP states he knew within that time he knew he liked AoC and WAR. So did most people. And it turned out after those five minutes dragged on the games were lacking severly. In other words..that five minute assessment was improper for a true image of those games. Everyone loved AoC for five minutes...or let's just the first twenty levels before realizing nothing much after that. Well some folks have stated the complete opposite in regards to Rift.
But in your whopping five minutes you have no way of being able to speak of this because supposedly it only takes five minutes. A time that it is more linear and detailing for new players because believe it or not folks there are people new to mmo's every time that don't have those past experiences and gaming knowledge. So if you're expecting some amazing glimpse into a game's future in five minutes you'll be left unsatisfied, simple as that.
5 minutes?
Seriously, it prolly took you more time to write the op then you spend in game.
I think in most cases 5 minutes to evaluate a small copy of Azeroth (designers own words) is more than enough.
Expect a lot of frustration when people have to download for 5 hours and then play it for 5 minutes.
That's the reason of those threads I guess...
This is a common argument, and actually your right. Nobody CAN judge properly ANYTHING in life byjust 5 minutes of experience.
This has always been the critisism I get when I 'critisise' a game, so now, I always always continue to play a game I'm "testing" for a week or so, so that when an argument is put to me I'm safe in the knowledge that actually, I did give it every chance. Which the OP here doesnt seem to have made.
So, while rift in my first few hours experience was very dull, I reloaded it last night to continue. I cant remember how far into the game I got but at some point I found myself getting involved with the "Rift events" There were those actual rifts which appeared that you had to re-seal with people around you.
Then as I got further into the map there were those events where certain sites were coming under attack. I have to say I rather enjoyed them.. inbetween those events and doing quests I was suprisngly NOT bored.
After a while I realise I had receive tons of loot, so then spent about an hour sifting through all this loot figuring out what it all did, and in turn started looking deeper into my character skills to understand better what I had initially skipped over.
So yes, once you get past the 5 minutes, and once you've ignored the 'wowish' style graphics things to get a lot more interesting. My concern now, as I get to level 15 is that even these nice distractions might get too repetative. Its great when your leveling fast and learning new skills quickly, getting new gear quickly.. but as this slows down is where the challenge really comes in.
