1.) yes it is better to start pref a merchant or adv till you have enough war funds
2.) there are a few well known pirates now. ganking is rare since you get pirate status when you attack somone even on non PVP areas you can be attacked if you have pirate status
3.) yes it is 100% possible playing the peaceful merchant who can hire bodyguards and invest in ports and rule my means of cash investments taking over ports ^^
1. Merchant is better to start off with imo. It's pretty easy to level it so you can get into better ships faster early on. Especially if you pick up a skill like casting, and change ore to metals to sell or make muskets to sell etc.
2. In the open sea in general not so much. Around citys like Calcut and Run yes. It's a good idea to take some company mates when going to the few pirate hang out areas or just wait for the waters to turn safe.
3. Yes indeed. My wife plays and hates to battle and still finds more than enough to do running around trading and doing treasure maps and such. Allthough having at least some levels in maritime will help you get into some of the better ships in the game.
