If a new mmo came out with very poor graphics, I'm talking as bad as EQ1 or DAOC or even less that is coded well. BUT with extreme immersion, very large world, many starting cities, dungeons and raids right from the start. Would you jump on it ?

I can definitely bare with bad graphics, although Art-style is very important as well. If it was a combination of bad graphics AND horrid art-style, then there is no saving it. Video-games are visual after all.
"No, I insist on both, after all it's 2011".
Depends on the Style of Art, the tech should not be worse than Daoc nowadays which looks ok so far.
I would not play a game with graphic like WoW, Alganon etc. and i really have the thought that the Engine of Lotro with better Chars and less comicstyle Art IS an old tech that still can bring on to the screen fantastic results!
PS: I played the Withcer lately, great game with perfect Art for its genre.
Dont like the new Witcher 2 will have his Hair horsetailed...

one word, minecraft
Voted no- Dwarf Fortress
Nice thread. I am pretty sure that most people have some standards now and simply cant play 2d game slike starcraft 1 for a lot of time. My first mmo was lineage 2 and it had amazing graphics.
The problem is graphics are something important for a good game as well as gameplay. I would consider it, if a game was realy really good and had PERFECT gameplay but since in order to make a successful game(remember economically succesful=/= good game) you end up with a lot of mind tricking gameplay instead of real gameplay which simply isnt that effective
Gameplay is nice but many times its only a psychological trick to make player
Like in minecrafts case, giving the person that power to do almost anything(havent played it to go inot other psychology based mechanics)
1)what games dont allow, therefore targets a bored crowd
2)they dont have any real power in real life
Very poor graphics?
Well I guess if the gameplay was fun then...yes.
and to all you who consider 2D graphics "bad"...sorry but I'll have to disagree.
there is good "good" 2D graphics as well as "bad" 2D graphics. how do you justify comparing 3D to 2D, one gets the upper hand of having another full dimension...
thats like comparing a bicycle to a car....
Little forum boys with their polished cyber toys: whine whine, boo-hoo, talk talk.
I would for sure. If I could get Hearth and Home to not crash on me I would be playing it now. For how long. . who knows. I also liked Dwarf Fortress though so that says something.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
I'd like to think I'll enjoy them but from all the one's ive played poor graphics don't just mean the look of the game but the entire feel of the game aka the entire engine being gimped. And when that happens, the gameplay usually isn't that great either, i mean it works sometimes when the gameplay is extremely simple and doesnt rely on the engine much like Minecraft but if I'm playing a fps that feels like the original wolfenstien...no thanks.
But seriously, its 2011, poor graphics shouldn't be a problem. If indie devs in the MMO genere are able to pull off some fairly decent graphics I'm sure the rest can as well.
I think that Minecraft proves the point that people are willing to forget about the graphics if the gameplay is great.
You had me until you equated raiding with great game play. So very few raids that I've ever been on would constitute great game play. In fact, I can count the goods ones on one hand.
There is a game much like you describe and it doesn't have raids (nor dungeons). WWII Online. Great game play, but graphics aren't Call of Duty level (nor could they be in a massive environment). I'd still play that game if the community didn't suck so bad.
anyone else play master of orion 2, or any of the civilization series?
graphics are important, but gameplay is a MUST.
if all i wanted was pretty id collect art, not play mmo's.
IF THE ONLY DEFENCE FOR CRITICISM OF A GAME IS CALLING SOMEONE A TROLL OR HATER, THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE GAME
Currently playing EQ1 so, yes
Gameplay over graphics any day
Playing: Single player games |
Awaiting: Wild Star |Blade & Soul | The Repopulation | The Elder Scrolls online | ArcheAge | Firefall | Survarium | Bless | Black Desert |
Played: Guild Wars | Diablo 3 |The War Z | Runescape |World of Warcraft |Combat Arms |Perfect World | Rift | Fiesta | DC universe online | Aion | Age of Conan |Allods | Vindictus | The Secret World | Forge | Battle of the Immortals | Global Agenda| Cabal Online | Tera |
Gameplay > Graphics.
My current game H&H proves this.
Random H&H image.
No, I wouldn't play a poor graphics game even if it had great game play because there are and will be games that offer both. This doesn't mean that I will play a crap mmo just because it has nice visuals though.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
Well, it depends.
I want a full-on 3D MMORPG. I don't want Maple Story or The Sims Online. I've played 2D isometric games and I eventually switched to full-on 3D and it is just so much better I don't want to go back!
I also care about art direction too. World of Warcraft doesn't have great graphics, but it has a cool art direction and it is fully 3D (and among other reasons) is the reason I play it,
Depends on the art style, like most said.
If it's so childish and unrealistic, like WoW, then no.
Depends...bad 2d graphics, are WAY better than bad 3d graphics.
Minecraft graphics aren't bad imo, and there are graphics mods to improve them (usually by a great amount, depending on the mod)...I play vanilla MC, but for those who want better graphics, there are mods.

I'm a glutton for graphics. But they only keep me staring for so long. Great content w/ bad graphics only works when I can struggle with my good buddies. Either way, it's still 2011 and I'm salivating like a bi-curious senior citizen at tapioca hour for a MMO that can show me the goods.
No, I insist on both, after all it's 2011
It depends just how bad the graphics are and how good of a game it is.
I won't play EQ1, but I will play Darkfall.
BG series, PS:T, Diablo series, Neverwinter Nights, Daggerfall, Mario 3, Dark Forces 2, etc etc etc. Why is it the greatest games to date don't have dx 9000 graphics and useless processor eating water/forests? Sure for the time of their release they were top in graphics. But still to this day people still play them.
Oh yeah, because they're good games. They were good back then when people thought their graphics were top notch and they are still good now. Graphics are eye candy. They help with getting into the game. But they don't make the game what it is. Graphics are on the outside of the cake. It's whats on the inside of the cake that makes it so delicious. No wonder gamers these days are stupid. They enjoy the sugary pre-processed crap outside, instead of the delicious ice cream cake inside.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
I do not think you know what you are asking about.
EQ graphics are sure dated but the game has tons of assests that would cost a lot to recreate. It is nowhere cheap, it is just ugly.
To be more constructive, look at two very succesfull games:
- EvE: most of time I am looking at squares and letters, but I have the option to visualize my character and my ship, the game has very simple graphics that look very awesome
- Dofus: it is 2D flash game with relatively low amount of grahics, but the art direction is really good
On purpose I did not give my opinion in my opening topic to not start an argument as a personal opinion always does. But here it is now.
Remember this is only my opinion :
Age of Conan- As fail as it was, you would have to admit that Funcom put a lot of work into that mmo. This game is a PERFECT EXAMPLE how game take from immersion to concentrate on graphics add to the fact that they had to zone and paths on rails. What Funcom did is try to give people what they wanted, GRAPHICS.
To make a video game it must be a hell of a lot of work, and with an interactive mmo add 3x to that !
Vanguard- Now this could have been histories biggest upset. Siegel had it right. They really probed the minds of mmo players and knew what they needed. They intended to give a full rich game from the start, very inversive. But with two problems.
1) GRAPHICS- Here is that ugly word again. If they made simple graphics, I'm sure it would have ran better.
2) Coding- They used the same nasty format of EQ2, that to day is still screwed up.
World of Warcraft- Now they got everything right. Some problems in the beginning, but they fixed them fast. WHY ? Because they went with the cartoon. This allowed them to concentrate on game play. I don't care what anyone will say every zone had its very own unique theme complete with music to fit. One zone had nothing to do with the other as far as theme. With the cartoon model they were able to concentrate on content.
Lord of the Rings-I believe to this day, Turbine is the only game that got it right with GRAPHICS and game play. The only one !........I'm not a programmer by far, but they have some sort of magic going for them with their programing that no one can touch even to this day. I don't like LOTRO. Too boring for me along with FTP, but they did both Graphics and immersion well. THE ONLY GAME THAT HAS BOTH.
Now it's only my Opinion but the people that voted for graphics and immersion ( cake and eat it too ) are very shallow, or too young to understand that technology is not their yet. They have Super computers and feel as if they have to max things out to justify $2,000 in parts.
Well I have news for you, I have that $2,000 super computer that can play anything. But I'll take immersion over graphics any day..........I would like to play for a few hours, hop in my car, drive down the road and say " Man, that was fun "
