Rift is like going back to the old and known and GW2 is for those who are tired of the old and known. Both are new games and you should try something new every now and again.

Why play FPS intead of RTS? Why play GW instead of WoW? They have little in common. Also, you do not play FPS intead of RTS, you swicth between FPS and RTS, same you switch between GW and WoW. It cannot be stressed enough how different WoW and GW is, they have pretty much nothing in common besides surface similarities.
Rift? Because you want more WoW alts you will not play in the end but it is fun to see new zones and make new alts.
Why play Rift or Guild Wars 2 instead of WoW. What is there that makes these special- like top 5 features for instance.
I do not care about Rift actually. I do not like its idia. But Guild Wars 2 is what I'm waiting for. Guild Wars 2 will have:
Advanced storytelling that will be similar to some offline RPGs like Dragon Age.
Intresting world, intresting races, perfect graphics, and no grinding.
Very intresting combat system, that will require more player's skill and will be much less gear-dependant than WoW.
Event system instead of quest system, wich will make persistent world much more realistic and intresting than WoW.
Scaling system that will allow players with different characters' levels (10 and 76 for example) to play together and have the same challange/difficulty.
PvP completely separated from PvE, so both aspects will be balanced perfectly.
5000000 millions people screaming, wheres my x-server friends,im not overpowered, wheres my gearscore is it good, gnomes are trolls, wheres my murlocs pet who say piip,am i best build,i hate gold sellers so much that i gave my account to them why bliz why..and so on.
i hope theres no reason to play rift/gw2 over wow.
You can't play GW2 even if you wanted, so that solves one part of the equation.
As for WoW, if you're happy with WoW, you'll stay there. If you're not happy and want something radical different, you probably won't like Rift. If you are an ex-wow player and looking for the vanilla feeling, you might find it in Rift.

for gw2?
1: not wow community And how will WoW Community not be here?
2. new content I agree, this is always better. But depends on how long that feeling last. case and point Warhammer
3. better questsystem as it seems Developers returned the "!" mark over their heads. Events seem more like Public Quest from Warhammer. but hey, maybe thats better.
4. pvp will most likely be balanced unlike wow Nothing is ever balanced when it comes to PvP with Gear Focus and Class Differences.
5. no monthly fee means if you play it over more than 3 months you paid less than for wow Yes, excluding the DLC and Mall
To me Cataclsym took WoW in the wrong direction and broke to many things, it also brought with it more of a grindy feeling at the end game than evr before. So it is an easy choice for me. I'll be playing Rift.

Not sure how Rift pulls in Vanilla WoW players. Its more like a PvE focused version of Warhammer, rather than a WoW like game (accept the Talent tree system). It even use the same crappy engine that Warhammer uses.

Hey the WoW players, screamed on the top of their lungs, that WoW in WoTLK was too easy.
So Blizzard spiked things up. Now people are complaining that they did too much. There is no pleasing these kind of people.
How can we tell you why you should play GW2 over WoW when no one has actually played the game. Maybe when it comes out we will be able to tell you. Besides GW2 is a normal game which you buy and you are done with it. It's like why should I play Mass Effect and not WoW? You can play both because ME doesn't have a sub.
GW2 targets a very different kind of people. It's basically gonna appeal to GW1 people who hate grinding, ridiculously long leveling and very competitive PvP which does not favour gear.

This is very true. Vanilla WoW is one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. But Rift doesn't even come close.

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. Bought cataclysm on my last day of work (seasonal job.. Figured I had time to kill) but had it sitting unopened on my desk for 2 weeks.. Didn't want to come back.
Eventually I talked myself into it and resubbed last night as well as reactivated.. Did one level on my lock, hunter, and priest and came to the conclusion that WoW is absolutely the opposite of what it started as. I physically can't play again..
I sold the account and ended up making like 3x what was spent in keys / time but still, bad experience.
My guild also convinced themselves RIFT is the second coming of WOW (They all quit a few months after I did back in mid summer).. I played it and it honestly feels like "more of the same". No exploring, no secret areas, just linear grinding about the same as WoW.
I might try it but its super doubtful, going to continue waiting on GW2 and might play LoTRO.. I always liked their enviorments and lore.
Not much for huge amounts of PvE or spreadsheeting, I do however love tons of PvP and exploring.
for the most part, i'll play just about anything over WoW because it has such an out-dated combat system and mechanics. devs still dont know what they want with half the classes, so everything is being revamped with every major patch. this has been the case since TBC.
i imagine most people wont be playing Rift over WoW because it's a clone with better visuals. GW2 on the other hand is a completely different game with action MMO mechanics, new visuals, physics, and dynamic PVE. GW2 owns WoW in just about every category and thats just from what theyve announced thus far.
if i want a slower-paced, "real" mmo, i'll play EVE, which i am. if i want action, i'll play DCUO, which i am. WoW has absolutely nothing to offer for me.

I will give you reasons I know of that people will play them over WoW.
1.They are newer. 2.They look better graphically. 3.They have some deep hate for Blizzard/WoW. 4.Previous Love of GW/New function of Rifts. 5.They hope these two games will fill the gap that 2010 has left in most of us and maybe do something different and ground breaking, or they are just tired of the WoW end game gear grinding.

4 out of 5 of these listings are the reason 90% of MMO players switch MMOs...
Too bad 4 out of 5 of these listings also don't specifically relate to the game itself and these "newer features" get older after a while, leading most people to quit.

I sort of dropped my interest in Rift as I didn't like how some of the stuff that was in it. So I can't answer that.
GW2 is a different story as it is B2P, so it is like a normal non-MMO game (in terms of $$$)
If we get into non-MMO vs MMO then it really becomes hilarious.
Why play Dead Space 2 over WoW?
Why play Mass Effect over WoW?

because wow has been out for nearly 7 years a people are sick of it.
In the case of GW2:
1. Events instead of quests
2. Dodgerolling, running while shooting/casting...
3. No trinity (Tanks,DPS,Heal)
4. 3 side PvP in massive open zones like Frontiers in DaoC
5. Better graphics
6. Better Artstyle
7. No WoW crowd
8. Buy Box Only
Yup its simple .. many people have had enough WoW , and im not bashing , enjoyed it myself for years .. but its time for a change..
Why play WoW over Rift/GW2?
Nothing special about Rift, but if you can choose between a 6 year old game and a brand new game, why should you take the old one :P

B2P payment model (the same as GW1 had).
And much more interesting things...

That's the feeling it gave me personally. Purely subjective.

Question should be, why play WoW at all?
I'll play any one of these games , because it is not WoW, and I always was bored while playing WoW.
