I still think Rift is going to do better than people think. Mainly because all people's argument so far has been "it's a wow clone so I only played it for 10 minutes then uninstalled it."
Everyone is eventually going to play it past 10 minutes and go OH. So Rift IS different.
No, not everyone is going to go "OH, So Rift is different." Some people may WISH that were true, but....there are plenty of people like me that played through almost ALL of the beta thus far (missed this last one) and didn't end up particularly caring for RIFT. (And I didn't just play it for 10 minutes. It sincerely doesn't appeal to me on any level.)
This is how all games are. Some people are not going to like EVERY game, regardless of how "great" some others think it is. Reason being: we all have different taste in games. I find it's best just to accept this and get on with playing the ones we, personally, enjoy, rather than trying to force our opinions on others.
By the way.....I also don't consider RIFT a "WoW clone," I found it to be more akin to Warhammer, which I also did not like. And if you're curious, I'm an EQ2 vet so I just have different taste, that's all.
People claiming this game has bad graphics, calling it a wow clone or saying it's clunky are deeply uniformed.
Is this game a copy ? Yes and no, its a copy of WARhammer online, the Rift system (Public Quests) the warfronts play much more like WARs then WoWs bgs (which is a very good thing)
It's also quite possibly the closest thing we've gotten to a "sandbox" with major funding behind it in a long time. The soul system kind of reminds me of a watered down Star Wars Galaxies before Lucas Arts ruined it.
If you haven't played it, try it out in one of the betas (if there's still one left ?) I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing it. And with graphics on the higher end, it looks very close to AoC/FF and runs smoother then that crapshoot FF did.
Only time will tell how this game goes, but for the love of Smedley..stop calling it a WoW clone..WoW is a clone anyway.
You know the part I like the most about these forums, is all the people who claim they know things here. Like all those in this thread who claim Rift is just another WoW clone with nothing new. I'd agree with them if I hadn't witnessed first hand the Iron Tyrant invasion in Freemarch. Lets say this game is just like WoW and agree with these others, right. And in WoW, over the 5+ years I played including Beta for it, I never once had ANY event that even came close to that Iron Tyrant invasion in Rift yesterday. The entire zone went pitch black, death rifts every step, bosses and mob invasions everyplace, hundreds - and I do mean hundreds of players dying left and right. Until....until that one leader amongst the players finally stepped up and took charge. Coordinating the efforts of 200+ people accross the entire zone. And after hours of un-ending combat we finally got to meet up with Jakob in the Iron Fortress for one last battle.
Now sure you can all say 'well that was just a ramp up for Beta', ok - sure they put in the event FOR beta but it is an event we can have in live too. And sure you can say 'well it wont happen that often in live', ok - sure maybe not, but i have been in countless zone wide events so far in the last 2 Beta events that took 50+ of us 2-6 hours of un-ending combat to win. And no I'm not talking about a bunch of rambling zergites, I'm talking 3+ fully filled raid groups communicating and working together.
So what do we have thats in Rift thats like WoW you might ask? Well there are raid dungeons, and 5 man dungeons. They have NPCs that give you quests, and NPCs that buy and sell stuff for you. Oh yeah and there are armor and weapon drops as well as crafting. Sure if you generalize the game down to the basic mechanics and structure it is EXACTLY like WoW. Its a PC based MMORPG, the same as WoW is.
But really, if you did anything other than the tutorial...if you even bothered to go out in the world and contribute to the events...if you ACTUALLY played the game of Rift, then I doubt you could come here and say its JUST like WoW. Because the truth is it isn't. But hey, its not my job to make you all believe me on this because i know some of you never will. You seen your 15 minutes of gameplay, in the tutorial, with your 2 starter attacks, with your graphics setting turned to minimum, and decided you had seen it all. Thats like sitting down in a movie for less than 45 seconds and walking out to give your review, and it should be taken with just that much salt if you ask me.
I find it strange that everyone pays so much ATTENTION to the posts calling RIFT a WoW clone and other posts that disagree with that get completely ignored, for the most part.
Why does anyone that enjoys RIFT even CARE that someone is (yet again) proclaiming clone status on RIFT? It's not like ya'll haven't heard that hundreds of times now. Why not focus on the other posts?
The OP says the game stinks...I'm inclined to agree with him as far as it not meeting my particular TASTE in games, however, beyond that I can't agree with him. I think RIFT has plenty of good points, is NOTHING like WoW (I never WILL understand that comparison), and obviously there are a lot of people that will be playing it. So WHAT that some of us won't????
Why are people so interested in trying to tear down others ideas of a good time repeatedly? And why care about it if they do? It all just seems so silly and unproductive. Seems like it's just sort of become the purpose of these forums, unfortunately,
I'm personally having a great time, but I didn't have any knowledge of the game prior to playing Beta 4 (so I didn't have unrealistic expectations.)
Just one thing I'd like to address. The game is very well-balanced. The only niggling thing would be the activated racials, but those are being looked into. Outside of that, both sides have access to the exact same souls, and there are hard counters built into the game to take care of particularly troublesome (intelligent) players.
The game is good as is, but the thing that sets it apart for me is how the game improves significantly with each patch.

Oh the racials, yeah I once thought some of them were pretty awesome OP until I started looking around the game more. Take the Eth racial Shield Generator - it sounds pretty awesome as 'a magical shield absorbing damage equal to 25% of their maximum health. This effect lasts for up to 20 seconds" right. But lets look at that a bit. Level 30ish warrior, pretty average-good gear with some runes for endurance and your looking at 2500-2800ish HP - 25% of that would be 625-700 damage absorption. Yeah pretty cool huh, entil you know this...the Warding Potion made by the Apothecary craft, usable at level 10 (skill 60 to make), it absorbs 838 damage over 30 seconds. And everyone can have those, even a mage at level 10 with 500hp can absorb 800+ with those potions - an Eft mage at level 10 with 500 max HP can only absorb 125. Sure you might think its better the higher you are, but really - how much better does it have to be to come close to the Heroic Warding potions which do 2994 absorption. You would have to be over 10k HP for the racial to get close.
Pretty much every bonus gained by the racials is available to everyone else in some other form (like this potion). No one race gets an exclusive anything.
